Like how much do you end up making?
I have been working at a job selling mens clothes for a year now. Higher end clothes.
The guy that hired me (the manager of this mens store) was a former co-worker and road room mate at a previous job. When I worked with him at the previous job I knew him to be loud and obnoxious and confrontational. Growing up among religious nuts I have become accustomed to dealing with extreme personalities so I took the new job when he offered it to me. The money was good and the work load was MUCH less then our previous job.
Over the first 5-6 months we had a part timer who was stealing sales from me. I am the only full times sales person and I make less then minimum wage+4% commission. Even the manager makes 2% commission. Most of my income comes from commission. The part timers make a base rate and nothing more. Part timers are support and are only meant to take customers if the main sales person is being overwhelmed. I talked to him about it many times and he never did anything to fix the issues.
Over time a lot of issues started to pop up around the store. He dealt drugs out of the back room once to a customer. If his sales were slow for the week he would send me home so I couldn't make sales. Going to far as to give me a Saturday completely off with my base pay so he could make sales. Keep in mind that this guy is a complete sociopath and just saying no I want to stay was not an option.
He messes with my clients from time to time. Clients that I would give discounts to he would grill about why they should get them when he was there.
When doing returns he would hold customers hostage and explain to them why they were wrong for returning merchandise.
So this went on for some time and I just dealt with it because the money was good and I had no reason to shake the boat. Then I found out I was having a kid. I started looking at things more closely and realized that eventually this ship is going to sink. The store will start to fail and this guy will throw all the employees under the bus to save his own ass. So I went to another manager from a sister store and asked for advice. He told me I needed to contact the higher ups immediately and that he needs to be fired.
So a couple days later I get a call from my bosses boss, the regional manor. He tells me that I need to tell him the truth about a customer complaint that my boss had against him. My boss had been lying to him for some time. So I said well I have some other things I need to bring up because things have gotten out of hand. So I spill the beans and the regional manager immediately makes a plan to travel to town and speak to me in person the next day. He asked me to write down what I had told him and that if it was all true my boss would be fired on the spot.
So he comes in and I hand him the papers. He looks at them and tells me that he was emotional on the phone and that he couldn't fire the guy and that now he needs to tell my boss that I told him all this stuff so that they can get to the bottom of it. He asked me to give him three weeks time to take care of things.
Working there turns to hell on earth. This guy is a sociopath, manipulative passive aggressive asshole and now i am on his bad side.
Three weeks go by and hes not fired. I'm asked to give another three weeks. Those go by and nothing happens. The whole time im reporting to the bosses on how this guy is tearing the business apart. After the second three week period I was told that it is now above this guys head and he is reporting to his boss now and that there is no information that he can give me except that it will be resolved and that I need to be patient.
So now its been almost 2 months of the most tense anxiety filled work environment of my life and I don't know what to do. I'm 4 months from having my first kid, 3 months from moving out of town. The job is close enough to where im moving that I can make it but getting a job anywhere else in town in the mean time will make work hard when I move.
I am seriously stressed out and have no clue what I can do.
If anyone is able to read this novel and give me any advice I would really appreciate it.
Like how much do you end up making?
Find another job and quit. Being miserable at work is never worth it.
How much with your sales being stolen? Find another job. No brainer
For 28k a year, IF your sales weren't being stolen, you should move on and find another job. You aren't going to fix that mess and if upper middle management isn't' going to fix it then your choice is to deal or GTFO.
Find a different job. You're going into poverty level with a kid on the way.
I would agree with everyone else. Find another job. Also don't forget to set the building on fire.
The town i'm moving to is also smaller with less work. I just thought I would be moving with this job to go to.
I was projected to make $32,000 in my first year based on sales projections. The salesmen in similar stores make $40-45,000 for a minimal effort job. The store opened like a week before I started so its growing. Or rather not growing because of this shit manager. One of the reasons I took the job because I use my energy to teach BJJ part time on the side.
But I guess its time to move on and hope for the best.
Find a call center to work at. Sounds better than this retail gig.
I wouldn't put so much stock in how cushy the job is until you're able to support your family, bro.
Go work with Mist
Is that 1100 take home? after medical? taxes, etc? if so then that's usually a 33-37k year job while you are out looking for something equivalent :-) So if that is take home after all your taxes, retirement contributions, bla bla bla then you are making that estimation per year... sales jobs are difficult when you have a bad manager that can sabotage your income.
Honestly its mostly sitting around bull shiting about gaming and Magic or browsing Reddit. Its a specialty store so some days I may only see 3-4 customers.
My sister just bought a HUGE house, mansion-esq. Me and wife are moving in January 1st into the basement suite. Rent is dirt cheap and shes going to help with baby when we need it. She also employs my wife in one of her stores. She has several. Im not hurting for cash and life is great other then work.

Lots of people put up with lots of crap at work, but normally for a price. For a lot of money I'll put up with a lot of crap too.
By cushy do you mean not physical labor? Because honestly depending on your location I would think doing some sort of physical labor would pay more.
Got any leads/ideas on another type of work?
I mean I don't know about others but if I'm waiting around doing nothing I feel terrible and look for other work. I'm not 19 anymore, I've since realized life has a finite duration and I still want to buy more things. I would go insane in a job like that. It sounds like you're having a real crisis because the baby has started to take its toll on your thought process where before mediocrity and ease was the best and now not only do you feel like you aren't doing anything most of the time, you feel like you're losing control of the ability to safeguard your child even if your situation is a bit more complicated than that.
Don't get me wrong I know salespeople who make tons of money and are very stable. Maybe you should look for something that obviously will remove your current management issues but also allows you to take more direct control over your work and earnings, ie generate leads and manage accounts instead of sit around and wait.
Oh you never mentioned you had a successful sister. Yeah move in her basement.
Also I will most likely come out of this with a raise. I mean I have a direct line to the CEO of the company across the country telling me to stick in there and thanks for doing what im doing. The higher ups have just been saying they can't tell me whats going on for legal reasons etc
Why can't you look for a job while still working? They aren't mutually exclusive.
You have the right to quit. I don't know what more you think the legal system will do for you. Nothing sounds illegal outside of the drug deals.
Any sort of "hostile work environment" claim will be through legal action. It's basically not an option for you, since the money involved isn't going to justify expensive legal bills. But in any case, document in writing absolutely anything that's relevant should it ever get to that point.
It has gotten to the point of me working in other stores near by when my boss works so that we work opposite shifts. So they admit something is wrong. I really don't know, its beyond logic why he wasn't fired on the spot.
This might sound corny, but depending on how old you are/healthy, look into joining the military. If you have a college degree, look into an officer program. It is stable, the cash is decent, and you probably have a better chance of being killed driving to work than in combat if that sort of thing puts you off.
Other than that, at a private company, as far as I understand it your recourse for 'hostile work environment' is pretty much zero. Unless it can be directly and pretty obviously traced to discrimination of some sort - age, gender, disability, shit like that - there isn't much in the way of legal protection.
Edit: NM, didn't realize you were in Canada so not sure of the laws there. Not sure if the military thing applies either, that is my default advice to people who are at a crossroads.

Meanwhile this guy is banned from a near by Tim Hortons and a near by hair salon. He had a local sister store managers wife quit on him because he was abusive after she stood out in front of the higher ups. This guy is a perpetual fuck up.
Ill paint a picture for you. The most self absorbed homosexual man you have ever met who is the victim of every story he has ever told.
That sounds awful. I understand you've got to support a family, but I'd rather work 12-hour shifts flipping burgers or washing dishes than put up with that kind of work environment, especially for such low pay.
Has he ever sexually harassed you? Slapped you on the ass. Made comments while you were roommates? Show us on this furby where the bad man touched you?
That or quit / suck it up.
I was just looking over my payroll to see if it had been done properly. I noticed that he has been paying the part timer he favors major overages on hours.
Each week has a schedule and each week he is supposed to fill in payroll to mirror that.
Over the last 2 months he has given her an extra 2-6 hours a week....
Nah its not like that.
Every since this started 8 weeks ago hes given her about 20 extra payed hours
It's interesting that part time salespeople don't get commission but full timers do. Makes it a conflict of interest for anyone tied to the profitability of the store but still trying to maintain the "part timers are there to help if the full timers are busy" guideline.
It's easy for people on the internet to say, "Oh your story is saying that you are going through something uncomfortable? quit immediately!" but real life isn't that simple, because quitting without a good alternative is a terrible idea when you're trying to raise a family.
Here's something else that's easy for someone on the internet to say. If you're in sales, fucking sell. Taking home $500 a week won't cut it. If you think you're going to build a good future for your family by taking an easy route and "folding clothes" you're kidding yourself and need a reality check. Keep your nose clean, deal with the near term bullshit and look to improve yourself such that taking home $1100 in a two week period is a bad week where you can't even eat.
This has been a message from someone who knows nothing about sales. It's your life, make your choices.
I was forced to work with the guy the last three days. Today while I was working he want to tell me something and I was busy he immediately goes "Turn around and look me in the eyes when im talking to you".
I sent a email to his boss on my lunch break saying that this will be the last day i'm working with this guy I have had enough, if I am scheduled with him next week I will not be coming in to work. Within the hour he had called me and told me in confidence that the CEO of the company is flying across the country to deal with it on Wednesday. Apparently this had been planned for a while and he couldn't tell me. He let me know and told me to keep my mouth shut about it. But he didn't want me to quit before this happens.
They are buying him out is my guess.
He probably has dirt and they want him to sign a departure agreement. Do what your bosses' boss says.
Seems a little strange a CEO of a national chain would fly across country to handle a firing.
Ill definitely keep you guys updated.
I was told today that the ceo will be cunducting interviews with each individual staff member and I believe our sister store.
A lot of people think even with fairly hard evidence that management can get thrown under the boss. Theres a reason dilbert commons excist and strike a common cord. All my friends that are programmers and IT, myself in my field of work, right now my wifes work environment. Shitty people generally are better at whining and making a bigger stink than the legit worker reporting a legit problem. All too often the higher ups are shit bags themselves and so youll see action never taken at best, or at worst, either sweeping policy changes that hurts everyone, everyone but the perp fired/punished/sidelined, etc etc.
Like in your situation unless you had a cop walk in mid drug deal you could sic on him, generally sadly (and as long as it took me to learn) rocking the boat has like a 1/10 of a happy ending.
The way you paint it, I am kinda excited to know if this is one of those 1/10 times if president or whatever coming (depends on size of co.)
I don't think he emailed the CEO he emailed what sounds like a district/regional manager
It's also possible that this is bigger than Grumpus and he may not even be involved. The district manager "had it out" for the manager by Grumpus's description, so there's a good chance those two have been fighting and Grumpus is just a casualty not even the main player in the dispute.

I'm fairly certain the CEO gives absolutely zero fucks about a semi-FT employee and his grievances against his manager. But it may just be one of those straws that broke the camel's back deals where the regional manager has had problems with this store manager for a while but his hands are tied in firing him.
My wife has been a restaurant manager for a long long time and I can speak with a certain level of authority that if it's getting into upper management, especially the CEO, then it's well beyond Grumpus. He's just ammunition in a larger fight. Likely HR and others have been gathering intel for a while. The sensitivity of the situation is why the CEO is involved, otherwise the DM or his direct would be doing it.
It's hard to fire someone in certain organizations, especially if they're corporate in any way. The red tape is staggering. However, once the hammer does come down, there's no question about it sticking.
Everything was being handled by the regional manager for the first month and a half. He was filling me in on the happenings and giving me updates. Then he told me it was above him and that he couldn't talk about it anymore.
My manager is a very volatile dude. He talks a big game. Every time we had visits from the regional manager he thought he was getting fired because hes fucks around so much. He would always say things like "Well they better have there shit together because if they don't ill tear this place apart blah blah blah"
When all this started one of my part timers quit and he went on a rant on this guys last day. I heard all this second hand so I can't speak to what was actually said. He told the part timer that he was filing a complaint against the regional for harassment for hovering over him while he tried to do his job. Also he was going to spill the beans about the regional letting a manager hire his wife to work our store. The last part the company knew about, my manager just didn't know.
There was no harassment and they knew about the wife so I thought it didn't matter.
All this shit sounds like high school job drama. How old are you?
Just got a call from human resources. Im meeting with the CEO in a hotel meeting room on thursday morning.
Thats sounds fucking ominus.
Just because people keep mentioning the low pay etc I feel like I should explain.
I was in the trades out of high school. I was a floor coverings installer for 8 years. I installed carpet, lino, tiles hardwood etc. It started to effect my health severly and my dad (who I worked with) took two years off for physio to fix his work place injuries.
I was making $35-40 an hour.
I also teach BJJ part time and decided to quit installing to work easier low stress jobs so that I could focus on what I loved to do instead.
I get it, im poor but im doing my best and was way happier before this bull shit started happening.
We're just saying one of the benefits of having a low paying unspecialized job is that you don't have to put up with much shit.. since you can go get another one...in a few minutes.
I mean whats the worst that could happen. They fire you? Go in there and see what happens. And report back.
As long as you can support the kid, who cares what you make. Just know that they are expensive as fuck, take it from me!
Also in general we all believe you can do better
Kaige#1128 - Battle.net
Kaige - Steam
I bet the CEO is going to promote your manager. Fail upwards!
I think your going to be the new manager Grumpus...., if not, time to drop the Sexual Harassment bomb. When you are the manager can I get a deal on a new suit when I visit Vic in January? Do you stock large sizes? i am a 52 chest! I have my perfect fit card and everything !
He's going to end up on undercover boss. All the shitty people keep their jobs and get paid educations and training, the CEO will remain disappointed but fatherly. Grumpus gets a puppy because he mentioned he lost his dog one time.
Basically BC Labor board is involved. The person I dealt with today was asked by BC Labor to investigate the situation and report back to them. He's conducting a lot of interviews today across multiple stores. In the meantime I can work somewhere else until it is dealt with.
He assured me that he will be dealt with, but on BC Labor's time line. He apologized and told me that this is not how they handle situations like this. It sounds like my boss filed a complaint against the company so now it has to be handled externally.
I guess it has been a while but why be intimidated? I mean the job objectively sounds awful and I don't even know why you're trying to make it work so hard. Its like when I worked at Best Buy and they tried to big dick me with a regional manager. I was so yolo-dont-give-no-fucks about the job I could care less is the dude fired me on the spot. Oh I lost this terrible retail job? Guess I'll go to absolutely anywhere else and also have a terrible experience there.
Is that code word for "I like being stepped on by everyone"?
