    Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

    cover-reveal-front-610.jpg

    Mankind Divided

    Can't Kill Progress

Squenix is running an ARGish type event on twitch right now, apparently its for the reveal of a sequel to Human Revolution as it looks like Adam Jensen is back. Very hype.

One of my favorite games of last gen, hands down, not even debatable.

Can't wait, I really enjoyed the gameplay of HR (even though the last level and ending pissed me off to no end)

Few relevant scans, no word on Malik or Sarif coming back. Seems as if they are pulling multiple parts from HR's endings to make a kind of canon ending.

I loved Human Revolution to death. Amazing game that completely captivated me when I was playing it. Glad to see a sequel and even more to see Adam back as the protagonist. Given the nature of the game and how you can approach situations from multiple tactics these cannot be easy to make.

God damn, I am hyped for this. I am going to have to reply HR again before this comes out. The ambient music in the game was awesome.

    Ooooooo

The Montreal based studios for various developers seem to be knocking the ball out of the park of late.

It's about time. I'm surprised they took this long to do this. It may only be on the PS4/Xbone/PC but that doesn't mean they won't bastardize some elements of the game. Any kind of shooter that has to be ported from a console has some consolefuckitis that comes with it.

I'm really happy to see that they are continuing this series.

All I remember from DXHR was the bad bosses, the unending computer hacking and the amount of stealth I had to do to get max xp =(

I should do a redo sometime.

Hype. I enjoyed DXHR despite it's flaws. At least they nailed the atmosphere in HR. Hopefully they just improve on HR instead of outright scrapping it's concept.

They tried at least to fix the boss fights.

Ypu should def replay it, but replay the revised version they released, it helps fix some of those flaws.

Yeah, I hope they won't stray from the basic stealth/shoot/hack model, it was really solid. The only nitpick is that non-lethal takedowns gave the most xp, which made it the most optimal approach during the whole game, but I have no idea how to fix that, since shooting needs to be solid to give you choice and solid shooting is usually simpler than skulking in the shadows.

They say Jensen is working for some international police force ? Odds of the organization not being "evil" ?

I went full on run & gun for my playthrough. I never had any issues with XP. I guess their idea is if you shoot up everyone you'll end up killing more people than you would doing the stealth approach so they yield less XP per.

0% since it's almost certainly a lead up to plot background for the original DX.

I hope they get rid of the battery requirement for taking down enemies. That shit was obnoxious. It's very telling how enjoyable this game was that, despite the flaws, people just kept playing it.

Except the revised version was inexplicably based on an old build of DXHR which reintroduced a bunch of previously fixed bugs that they never bothered fixing the second time around.

One of the best video game trailers I have ever seen. Means nothing about the game obviously, but given how great HR was I am stoked just the same!

Go play it, it fixes every issue people had with HR boss fights and thanks to starting from zero, you get to really good sense of progress.

Started playing the directors cut on steam again now. Finished the game a long time ago (regular version), but never played the DLC or directors cut.

Kind of crazy that just a few hours in, I think I have heard the developers in the directors commentary, mention money and time constraints a dozen times.

Notice the background the cars go by? in order to make the game seem more alive at certain "invisible walls", w e made a car pass by, just one car as we didn't have time or money to model another.

Or the story of the developer stealing sample posters that his ex girlfriend and her classmates had worked on in her industrial design program.

Not sure whether I'm more excited for this or XCOM, but probably XCOM.

I beat XCOM and the xpac (never touched LW mod), but I definitely am more excited for this. If they flesh out the narrative and overall user experience in XCOM2, it would be a strong contender for Mankind Divided, for me.

I was a little put off by them setting it 2029, give that that's only 14 years away, but I guess their hands are tied with the original being set in the 2050s. This will have approximately a 0% effect on my enjoyment of the game, however.

Eidos just had a big press day recently where they let a bunch of people play for a few hours. PC Gamer seems rather impressed.

    Highlights for me are:

    More detailed environments
Better graphics (HR looked extremely dated when it came out)
    More voice acting/ambient conversations
Non-lethal alternatives for previously lethal only augs (for example typhoon launches tranquilizer darts)

Mankind Divided is shaping up to be the best Deus Ex yet - PC Gamer

How much of HR really needed changing ? Bosses, maybe a bit more depth in the skill department or to fix all the waiting for your energy bar to regenerate. That's it. It'd be nice if they could pack in as much content as the original one, but given today's graphical requirements, I think most people can forgive them that one.

There was quite a bit that had room for improvement, but I'd still say it was an superior/excellent game when it came out in 2011. It seems like they got more money (or knew where it was better spent) this time around. The engine was laughably pathetic for a 2011 game. Maybe they felt like it would be nostalgic since the original Deus Ex's engine was also pretty substandard in 2000?

I'm looking forward to playing a drinking game with how many times they will mention money problems in the director's cut, let's hope they didn't get too much!

I honestly never felt like DX:HR had outdated graphics or engine. I could probably install it today and be satisfied.

Maybe I'm less tolerant (and you're more tolerant) of such things, but the lack of polygons, complex shapes, simple lighting, and low res textures in DX:HR really stand out to me when I look at other games that also released in 2011. I took a screenshot from the first page of results for all the games, and they're not all equal in terms of quality, but you get the idea:

    Arkham City

    Spoiler:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

    Spoiler:

    Skyrim

    Spoiler:

And finally, Deus Ex: Human Revolution

DXHR was built on an old Tomb Raider engine hacked together.

The stated reason was tuning and iteration. If I had to guess, I'd say they didn't want to release too close to Tomb Raider (same publisher) and the new Far Cry. August is historically slow for game releases. That being said, I'm not an insider; I'm just spitballing.

IIRC the last Deus Ex also released in similar window and I don't think it hurt sales at all.

I can wait. I agree that it's probably to avoid competition with these other adventure games.

Looking good. Hopefully they've used these extra six months to really polish the game.

Yep, I'm jaded ass when it comes to new games, but I'm buying this on release if they don't fuck it up.

I've had it preordered since like last August....

The first one was so fucking good I can't imagine this one being bad.

I've been a bit leery after all that preorder fuckery they tried to pull. As long as the game is great I'm sure I'll get it but I'm not going to preorder this one.

I don't remember what all the hubbub was about on that, seemed like it was just some preorder bonuses that everyone has, but I can't recall.

They ended up caving and just giving everyone everything anyway, so that was when I preordered it, which was the point that it got pushed back from late 2015 to early 2016. Then they pushed it back to August 2016 earlier this year.

    So whatever.

If I recall it was several tiers of preorder bonuses that started out locked. They would unlock each tier after X amount of preorders per tier and each tier had several items in it, of which you could only choose one item per tier.

Hmmm. I mean the tiered unlocks for preorders on Steam has been a pretty regular thing for awhile now. I don't recall there ever being multiple items and you had to choose. If that was the case, then I can understand the uproar.

If it was just the tiered unlocks, though, that shit doesn't bother me. I've preordered way too many games doing that promotion to get rustled over it now, personally speaking.

I like the Breach thing they announced, basically Deus Ex:Arcade mode. I have a feeling they want to shove DLC/microtransaction angle in there somewhere, but if the core gameplay is solid (and it was in HR) it could have some legs. The style they went with isn't my favorite thing, but w/e. too few polygons for my taste

“We're aiming for lighter than Hearthstone, because that's free-to-play, which we're not. We're a premium triple-A game. It's a lot of testing to get it right. We're really treading very carefully here. We don't want the game to be pay to win, especially since we're starting with a triple-A game that people are already paying for.”
That's reassuring to hear. Giving us a full game for our initial purchase, but adding in some microtransactions to speed things up (QOL improvement) and still avoiding pay-to-win.

“We also have this thing where, if you're incredibly close to finishing a map, but die, you can spend a bit of hard currency to revive.”

I'm not sure whether I'm jaded or realistic when I expected that without reading the article. It's like the Overwatch cosmetics, people are willing to drop the cash for absolutely superficial bullshit and not letting them do so makes them unhappy. Dying close to the finish makes people rage, so why not let them fix that for a few bucks ? Not particularly enthusiastic about it, but as long as that playthrough is marked as such and inelligible for any achievements/highscores, whatever.

Apparently Neotokyo's composer will work on Breach soundtrack. Color me intrigued.

A new 17 minute city hub playthrough was posted a couple days ago (it's extremely light on spoilers, but obviously avoid if you want a completely blind first playthrough):

It's seriously distracting in how they shove czech into the game, half czech, half english. Either go one way or another and learn to conjugate ><

Tesla gun looks a tiiiiny bit OP

I assume the knockout is not permanent or the cost of the upgrade is very high (and starts at 1/2 targets with high increased target upgrade costs). It can also be balanced with level design and enemy numbers and placement. Being able to hit 4 guys in one shot doesn't mean shit if everyone is in LoS of each other (shooting one alerts all) or there's a lot of patrols.

They've earned a lot of good faith from me with Human Revolution. I'm excited to get my hands on this in a couple months.

Another four minute gameplay clip. Looks like it's more of the same from Human Revolution, but they've tweaked and improved how smoothly you can transition weapons and skills.
