PS4 Champions of Norrath plssss
SOE was acquired by an investment firm and is now operating as an independent game development studio, no longer under the "Sony" umbrella.
Really.. surprising; it'll be interesting to see what this means for EQN, H1Z1, PS2, etc. In the announcement they said they are no longer restricted to PlayStation exclusivity, so that's a bonus, assuming they don't get funding pulled out from under them.

Planetside 2 for xbox could be interesting. Smed making moves at the mozzarella stick table.
Eq next is saved thanks to the power of the cloud and the app store!
Heroes of the Storm Hotsdogs
I would love to see some of their games on Xbox.
Is it just me, or is everyone at that company completely detached from reality? I guess the investment company had to see some glimmer of hope though, right? It also means new exciting developments for our existing IP and games as we can now fully embrace the multi-platform world we are living in.
How hard will this investment firm push for games in a browser?
Oh man what if this firm becomes Pantheons angel investor and makes Smed and team work on it?
Columbus Nova looks to have no history in the electronic entertainment and tech industry, from my limited research.
This could prove sink or swim for smed as it seems like an experimental move on Columbus Nova's part.
FYI: Their main website (with only 3 buttons) is crashing a ton today.
My prediction is Georgeson gets cut.

Xfinity! Yeah, that didn't work for Comcast either.
Best thing about this is the investment firm owns fiverr too, so lots of resources becoming available to the assorted SOE teams.
Either Sony is in trouble (unlikely) or they thought SOE was a loser (probably). They can put a cheery spin on this all they want, but it can't be good.
The first thing that happens after these buy-outs and mergers is a trimming of the fat. Hold onto your butts.
Well Sony has been in trouble for quite some time. Not sure if this will help or hurt SOE's, i mean Daybreak's future. Will see if they eventually hold on to EQ or sunset it and focus on new games and expanding the platforms for existing games.
I fully expect Daybreak to be just a placeholder.
Once they go into 100% develeopment mode of their established IPs in a browser, it will get renamed to Swampdonkey Online Games.
The virtual currency would be called Donkeybucks and you could become a subscriber to the Swampdonkey All Access program.
Place your bets!
Who will be gone first? Georeson,Higby or Smedly?
I'm thinking Smedly to be honest. I think he will fall on his sword after he is forced to cut half of his team.
New name is terrible.
Shoulda been renamed to Verant Interactive
Hopefully the new owners are neckbeards
If you're not getting positive nettz, you're not trying!
Rhapsody is the only thing I've heard of.
So no previous experience with MMO or online gaming?
Sony has been in trouble for a while now. The PS4 has been a hit but the company is huge and their TV and mobile departments are eating shit.
All legal and contractual annoyances aside, I'm sure the money part made sense for everyone. Not sure what SOE brought in but it probably wasn't the type of profit that Sony couldn't stand to part with for the right price. So they sell SOE, which I'd so was very loosely tied to the gaming side of Sony (consumer awareness, I mean) and probably make a pretty penny. Now Daybreak is funded by a company with deep pockets giving them more assets to work with and an entire roster of platforms to release on. Sony still gets to see EverQuest, H1Z1, etc. on their platform, too.
I wonder if Brad has contacted this firm to procure funding after this news.
I see this as bad long term. Given the way investment firms work by pumping in then draining the lake however I am curious if they make Rhode Island a bid now on Curt's game which I think was 60% or so complete. It should be nice and cheap by now.
If it disintegrates after the culling that might be to the betterment of this genre.
Edit: Depending on where the rejects get jobs at as UT says below.

The only thing I am concerned about is when this company gets broken apart and some of those rejects land a job elsewhere to continue the fuck ups. My guess over half of these would go to Zenimax Online or Zynga - the last bastion of hope for the most inept of the inept. Which would be just fine. In fact, close the company down, own the IP's, hire a completely new dev house after cleaning house, and hopefully all the Ex-SOE get placed in one of those two organizations.
The industry needs to contain the SOE Employee Ebola outbreak should it get broken apart, and Zynga and ZO would be the perfect small islands to send them all too.

I don't even know how to feel about this. I had already mentally shit-canned EQ Next just based on how awful Landmark was being developed. I guess what I'm asking is why should we care that anyone wanted to save SOE?
what an odd thing to buy and an odd thing for sony to sell. Sony really must be in more trouble than they are letting on, letting go of even shitty exclusives like DCUO, PS2 and EQ Landmark isn't a great sign for Sony.
bet you the new owners will force the studio to move to mobile gaming, that is considered the future in investment firms who are especially eyeing asia.
There's a distinct reason why EQN is pushing only four abilities per class up to eight max on a locked hotbar.

EverQuest: Heros Call Review - GameSpot
Seriously, has anyone played that game? It looks like it's history has been scrubbed from the net.
I'm really dubious about all this. This is all about making money, these firms don't have the attachment to the actual games.. I think we got a huge shit sandwich coming. Probably lots of pay to win items already being made for the cash shops...

Maybe I'm gullible (probably), but this seems like a good thing. SOE getting a husband means she might get a backhand for ineptitude instead of complacency.
It is too early to say this acquisition is a good or bad thing. But to a gamer like myself, I mean I love to see EQN one day regardless you like SOE or not. I had fun in EQ, EQ2, Planetside, Planetside2, even Vanguard.
So should EQ emulators start worrying too?
Daybreak trilogy by John Barnes, in which Daybreak is an alien-inspired mind virus bent on destroying civilization, I... don't have much difficulty associating that name with SOE. I mean, they almost got it with EverCrack...
I'm interested to see what Smedley puts on the headline of his new H1Z1 Daybreak website, whether or not he lets the producers market it as an MMO still.
I'll be keeping an eye on that. Little bit of a coincidence there.
This could really turn it around for Columbus Nova.
Can Georgeson... gotta be your first move
Focus on H1Z1 and do something with EQ.
Who cares about EQNext right now? I'd be surprised if they don't completely scrap it again anyway.
Oh and if Rhapsody is your most recognizable brand, you may want to evaluate your business plans and corporate strategies.
So with the hype they were trying to give Landmark and EQ Next, they end up selling to some relative no-name firm. This sounds like the slow and final hammering of the nails into the coffin.
This can't really be worse for SOE than being part of Sony. Sony is a sinking ship and has been for a while.
A board that's never had experience with entertainment rollouts like that will just stare you square in the face and tell you to get a workable product by so and so date or they pull funding.
Can't possibly be worse than Sony who's been down this road plenty of times in the past.
Just went on the h1z1 Landmark and EQNext Subreddits and took every SOE_Name from all the devs and registered a Daybreak_Name then PM'd them my Paypal info.
Putting PS2 on Xbone could be a decent chunk of basically free money given that it's all similar hardware to the PS4 port.
Didn't see this link so I figured I would add it to the thread. Realistically, I haven't read this link or the original because I'm busy at work, but someone sent it to me, so I'm putting it here.
Sony Online Entertainment sold off by Sony, renamed Daybreak Game Company | Polygon
So is it typical to hear something from the chairman or whoever is in charge in a deal like this?
@DaveGeorgeson · 36m 36 minutes ago
This week's update is moved from Wednesday to Thursday. (We have a company meeting on Wednesday that I forgot about.
Anyway, this ship should have sunk a long time ago. I am sure now instead of waiting for it slowly their new bosses will nuke the bitch.

What's going on in here guys? I hear Mitt Romney's Bain Capitol just bought SoE.
yea i dont think this is going to go well at all. Venture capital money is short term. They will most likely end up selling SoE or Daybreak once they see the right opportunity present itself. They make their money and whatever happens to SoE or Daybreak after that is not their concern.

Hopefully Elidroth can shed a little light on the recent events.
We should send Elidroth a pair of rerolled socks just in case.
Linda Carlson posted that SOE live will be on hiatus this year.............
Venture capital wants SOME short term return. Ideal situation for them is to come up with something bright and shiny to demonstrate the money was well spent in the short term and then have the resources to perform something long term. Remember that a LOT of venture capital gets sunk into terrible black holes of despair so in some respect having any positive return on such an investment is seen quite favorably.
Venture capital is the 1% playing roulette knowing full well the money might be wasted but addicted to the idea of hitting the jackpot and getting a staggering return.
That is "the" Fiver? Where you can hire people for little projects? That might be where their new talent is coming from.

My guess is we see EQN sooner than later just really unfinished. More unfinished than normal and that's saying something.
The end of an era. Hard to say if this change is good or bad for us ex-EQ fans. Since SOE hasn't done anything worth mentioning in almost a decade, I'm leaning towards good.
This slightly increases the chances of my dream of an Everquest Online Adventures 2 for Xbox One, so I'll even say that it's double plus good.
This news makes me nostalgic. After so many MMOs I've become tired of all the layers of complexity that have been added to this genre; the heavy-handed attempts to add a narrative to the experience, the convoluted progression pyramids, the constant mudflation of skills and levels. These days I want to go back to the beginning. A simple experience where you get a group of people and beat on something and it beats back until one of you dies. No quests or reasons, just a world of stuff for you to kill.
Were they even prepared for this? All of their game sites have the SOE logo still
