I don't have the game, so don't keep up to date with the thread now.

    Blizzard TF2/battle arena.
    http://playoverwatch.com/
    Overwatch

Char design in trailer was so nonsensical. saw it coming. Battle arenas are the only ones that can do it.
Nice to see him make the joke about wondering if there was a game attached, as really aside from char design, it was hard to pin down what kind of game that vid was supposed to be representing.

Looks like standard team FPS, with unique characters/skills instead of classes, like a moba.

Very derivative chars from previous games, etc. not sure if this is just alpha stuff or what.

    Cinematic Announcment trailer.

    Gameplay.

http://Playoverwatch.com is not resolving yet but apparently that is where one can sign up for beta and such.

I dunno as a person who really liked Team Fortress 2 this looks pretty darn fun

Thought it looked good to. raw graphics. Not a fan of how the characters seemed to lack any uniform concept.

I am concerned with teamwork with unique classes like that.
Although... I GUESS TF2 is a giant mess now with all the weapon variants. You never know exactly how a random teammate is actually going to play. highlanders and shit radically altering gameplay and team coordination.

Looks a lot like TF2 but with a greater array of characters and seemingly more abilities.

    Site still not working.

So the art assets from Titan resulted in this? Interesting. Was Titan going to be multi-dimensional / genre or was it always meant to be Superheroic?

I love team fortress 2 even though I haven't played it in a very long time. Overwatch seems like it'll be very similar and I can definitely see playing it. However, limiting it to 5 player teams might deter me a bit as I enjoyed the higher pop caps in TF2 games and the absolute chaos it created.

This game seems like it is suppose to be a better "GW2 PVP" (Action pvp with capture point objectives).

GW2 PVP was "meh" imo. This game seems 100x better simply because it isn't bloated with MMO stuff. I do like what was shown and the graphics are appealing.

Overwatch looked pretty amazing. I played TF2 a few times and it was fun, but this looks even better. I'm loving the artwork, reminds me of a mix between Blizzard art and Bioshock Infinite, with a pinch of Pixar thrown in. Good stuff!

There's a "Future beta" signup option on the battle.net website that I didn't see before. Probably will be for this game if you want to sign up.

They have videos on the site which show the controls and playstyle of each of the heroes. Fairly varied without being too crazy.

Have you ever played TF2? The objectives from that trailer were identical to the ones in Team Fortress. This just looks like a TF clone and nothing more, no other games mixed in, no other genres added to it. It literally looks like a piece for piece clone of TF2.

Also competes with Battleborn from Gearbox.

Looks like Blizzard is trying to hop on the "3D MOBA" train that is going to be rolling in. Not a huge fan of arena pvp games, so this was a bit of a disappointment.

    dat ass

4 skills and ultimate, game is supposed to be released on next gen consoles same time as PC but dunno if cross play or not (probably not). pretty meh, tons of random multi FPS games out now and I don't really see anything here amazing. I'd be more interested if it was a one time $60 b2p but you know its probably gonna be some bullshit f2p and micro transactions up the ass - I assume, I dunno how transaction heavy Hearthstone is and thats probably the model they are working off.

bummer for those gigantic guys, they gotta be crushed. its gonna be this vs battleborn (borderland guys) next year

    Yup, I have.
This game is not an exact ripoff.

TF2 allows duplicated classes per team/game. ie: 5+ snipers always on 2 Fort.
This game has "abilities" rather than relying on just weapon swaps and some character passives.
My only other comparison was GW2 which also had 5 man teams with a limited selection of abilities in a Capture Point arena, however you could have duplicate classes.

This game has "action pvp" similar to GW2 but with an FPS perspective and the team composition of a MOBA.

It's uphill for sure. The Blizzard brand alone would be bad news with just a couple screenshots, much less the gameplay footage. But I remember when LoL was a clunky underdog to HoN and all the dota snobs would keep shitting on Riot's Adobe AIR frontend and lack of denying.

    Fair enough.

They know you're gonna buy it anyway, so they may as well market it to 9yr olds IN ADDITION. It's like democrats reaching around to get evangelical christians to vote for them: WTF are YOU gonna do, vote Republican?

Don't be a cunt. WoW is not deliberately marketed to small children, but the cinematic for this Overwatch stuff looks precisely like a Pixar animated children's movie.

Sort of reminds me of SMNC, so that alone has me excited. It'll be great to see what can be done with that style of gameplay with a competent development team behind it.

Ok to use your ult you have to generate enough resource which is generated by dealing and receiving damage. So almost like an overdrive ability from Final Fantasy.

What the fuck does that have to do with anything? Cartoony style ages better and has been stated by game devs tons of fucking times. It has nothing to do with catering to an audience.

There's a legitimate argument to be made in there: CoD and BF franchises do well despite (or because of) their realistic art direction. Asscreed, MGS and other stealth titles do well without having to do the cartoony style.

But it's undeniable that Blizz's western-cartoon style has exploded its influence across the entirety of gaming. If behavior rewarded is behavior repeated, then considering how thoroughly Blizzard's art direction has been rewarded it's a surprise realistic games exist at all. That cartoony style has influenced just about every major game since WC3 broke out that most folks tend to forget just HOW influential it is.

Besides why do you think TF2 went to this:

I'll give it a shot, but it doesn't seem to be that amazing. I expected something a bit more interesting TBH.

FPS games are very tricky to get the "feel" right, so you need a few PC staples like dedicated servers and a lot of control customization. The fact that you can switch heroes on the fly seems really weird, the design seems like it would lend itself to locking yourself in for a whole match.

The art style is pretty terrible, it's very generic while hitting all the right notes, there's no "this is Blizzard". If somebody showed me the screenshots, I'd guess Firefall or some asian F2P shooter. I know bitching about female portrayal in games is the hip thing now, but literally every model is tits n ass in the same pose. You can do better Blizzard, this shit is so safe.

Unless this game is F2P, it's dead.

So I watched some people play it and it feels like UT + TF2 quite a bit. Fast like UT but classes like TF2 and strats like that instead of just deathmatch.

Depending on their pricing model it's going to wreck TF2.

A guy I work with used to work for Blizzard and said Overwatch was indeed part of Titan and basically the stripped out PvP part of the game

What the fuck is this garbage. The most obnoxious visual style and character design I can imagine. Worn out TF2 gameplay and MOBA character mechanics. Does anyone want another F2P pvp only shooter?

This game seems like a direct attempt to poach TF2s player base. It wouldnt be out line to call it TF2 rip off.

Going Head to head with Gabe and Steam? Okay. Good Luck.

Blizzard doesn't make games that get annual refreshes. They chose art styles that look relevant for many years. It's good business when you consider their strategy

Only way I see it working against TF2 is if they have all the staples like dedicated servers, custom maps, etc, etc

This is just what Blizzard does. They do NOT innovate, they iterate. None of their big games were ever first to market or genre defining, but they were genre elevating. Warcraft? Dune II clone. WoW? EQ. Heroes of the Storm? Any MOBA. Hearthstone? MTG.

They have a business model of "take something we know people love and make an absolutely breathtaking example of it". It works. I never had a single bit of interest in Team Fortress games. They just never appealed enough for me to investigate them. However, after burning out on Destiny and watching the previews of this, Blizzard has my attention.

I don't see how you can say they don't innovate when they take a product and make it better. Which is basically the Webster definition.

All I'm saying is they're not a company known for being revolutionary. They take an established product and polish it to the nth degree. That's not a criticism. They're very, very good at what they do.

Someone that knows their RTS/gaming history better than me but was there really an RTS like Starcraft prior to it's release? A game with the micro and macro scope of the game? I know WC1/2 evolved out of Dune and Starcraft was basically supposed to be Orcs In Space until they scrapped and re-did it. I don't recall C&C having nearly the level of base macro SC ever had. Dune nor WC didn't really have it as well. They may be the actual inventors of the modern RTS unless I just missed a game that preceded SC.

C&C: Red Alert had a fair bit, but Total Annihilation is the biggie that actually beat Starcraft to market by about a year.

Hm I guess I just remember C&C as building a deathball of high tech units and rolling. I don't recall much difference in races or if there was ever not a reason to just spam high tech units. Though I guess if SC never adapted a competitive scene that would be the same story for it's single player as well.

WC2 had a fair amount of micro + macro also. SC just took both to a higher level.

In WC2 you had to choose whether to 1-base and rush, 2-base and turtle the other guys rush and beat him with tech, etc; and there were a lot of variations on building placement and cannon placement and micro of your ogres/knights once you had a decent deathball...

And if you didn't win with your first rush you could sometimes 3 base and expansion-hunting was a very important part of the game.

Thing is that even if this is just a watered down version of TF2 it will still be something I try simply because I like TF2 but never think to really play on account of the hassle associated with finding a server etc. Now is that a terrible excuse? It is. TF2 is already pretty damn accessible, and yet if it was right there on my Battle.Net launcher and had dedicated servers and matchmaking I would easily be more likely to play it from time to time.

It can also appeal to people who like the notion of MOBA games with their constantly introducing and evolving heroes but who either missed the MOBA bandwagon or just don't get the sort of joy out of that style of game as they might from a first person shooter.

Red alert was out 2 YEARS before starcraft? wow, I don't remember that...
C&C 1 was fairly bogus. GDI was broken, I-win. Red alert was pretty competitive.
Starcraft is great and polished. but not alot to really point at and say, omg revolutionary. it was just better, and tighter.

Try "pioneer" when looking for a term to describe blue ocean development.

Pretty sure this will have some kind of custom map system, as well as servers, ala tf2. Blizzard had been giving mod kits for most of their games, no doubt this too.

All I know is people scoffed when they announced Hearthstone as just another generic CCG and now it seems they are printing money with it. You people are jaded, this is Blizzard with a new IP, you bet your ass people are going to play it. The fact that its TF2 with Blizzard behind it is just gravy.

I'm almost 27 and I thought the cinematic was pretty cool. If that was the trailer to a new Pixar film, I'd go see it (along with everyone else).

This game isn't for me. At all. I'm not big on FPS, never played TF2, don't like mobas, never played Smite. That said, this game looks really cool. If it can look good to someone like me, who shouldn't be anywhere near the target demographic, this game will be huge.

And I think the graphic are pretty good... it looks like a Blizzard game but at the same time has its own style.

Rip off of TF2? Khorum already touched on this, but to quote El-P, "You looking at the guy who the guy that you think that I got my style from got his own style from."

If they just pulled those character designs out of their ass after Titan was canceled, they did a pretty good job.

Blizzard's hitting this one out of the park.

If SC2, D3, HS and HotS have taught me anything, it's that this game is going to be overproduced for the gameplay you get out of the box and ultimately the glacially slow content release cycle will kill any interest I have in it. I used to love Blizzard's attention to detail, but man, they've really mediocritized all of their franchises in the last decade and despite making endless gobs of money, all we get is more and more waiting. Even HS, which you'd think would be a slam dunk with the ease of content development... nope, not even an Android client.

What has a game like TF2 drastically changed in the last 8 years?

I don't think he was saying TF2 is better. But yeah it's probably gonna be similar.

I'm pretty cautious about this game, mostly because HotS monetization is a fucking mess and I think they'll go for something similar. That and the fact they think "ultimates" are a good idea in a FPS. Shit's fucking stupid, even in TF2 where they only had supercharge, they had to nerf it several times and add a ton of options to fight against it(all the pushing weapons) to try to balance it, and that was just one class. Last thing I want to do in a FPS is die to something and think "whelp, nothing I could have done here, he had his ulti".

He is complaining that even if Blizz brings something out new they kill it with glacial content after release. My point is I think TF2 has show that funny comics every so often and stupid hats can keep a game insanely popular in that genre. Slap this onto the battle.net launcher where at least 8M people are seeing it when they play one of their other games compared to Steam where they might have 30 other games they notice before they think about playing TF2. Now make it new and interesting and not dependent on finding a good server and you do a huge amount of damage to TF2's market.

Dedicated servers, trading and community driven customization are three things Blizzard has very little experience with. On the other hand, is anyone looking for a game they are going to play every day for 6 months ?

The hell ? Your memory is playing ticks on you I think, GDI and Nod were totally different. The different style and tone were a huge part of what made it memorable - albeit it was taken to the next level by Red Alert, which I'd point out was *also* released years prior to starcraft.

That seems very unlikely. All the space bar actions are what you'd expect as a keybinding for these abilities: Climb wall(hold spacebar to climb), Jetpack(hold spacebar to fly) and the wings stuff(hold spacebar to slow down falls). To me that sounds like Space is jump but on the characters that have a space centric ability, you end up using it instead of some clunky space > shift combo.

Edit: Can see a bunch of jumping on this:

Given that this is what remains of Titan AND its their first IP in 17 years I can see why Metzen was visibly nervous before the reveal. Afterall they have gone to the bank with being known as 100% success guys so failure is not an option and anything that weakens the brand is a major risk.

I wonder if Overwatch characters will show up in Heroes of the Storm before the game is actually released?

Saw a clip of him talking last night where he said almost exactly that, Qhue. He described it as the team really needing a win to get their mojo back.

I'm actually excited for this. The big reveal worked one, and I'm not even close to a MOBA/TF2 guy. Maybe my lack of experience with those games is why this looks fun.

Given that this is Activision and Superhero-ish they should go full on Skylander on this shit and get Toys for Bob to make action figures for the different characters to use as an unlock mechanism. Perhaps not the only unlock mechanism, but it would be the next logical progrrssion for kids who have aged ~5 years since the first Skylanders (and their uber geek parents)

Its cool they arent wasting the resources and putting out a game. But really, what is the plan here?

Is there some barrier to playing TF2 that Im not aware of? Watching the game play it pretty much looks like a reskin of it, right down to the stream healing. This has a very specific type of gameplay. Its fast twich and frantic. Everyone who likes that game is already playing TF2.

So the plan is to poach the player base from Valve? Really? Its good thing people arent fanatically loyal to Gabe. At best they have made an alternate to split the community.... at least until Valve comes out with something that completely changes the paradigm, again.

Don't think I've played a single one of these games that I've actually enjoyed as a shooter since enemy territory if you can count that, since they're all objective based team games.

Its hard to keep an open mind because it has been so long since I enjoyed an fps in this style

I don't have any experience playing TF2. Does Overwatch look more or less complicated in comparison?

How well does TF2 do as an eSport? I judge eSport popularity by Twitch viewership, which has TF2 relatively low on the chart.

At best they have made an alternate to split the community.... at least until Valve comes out with something that completely changes the paradigm, again.
if youre cynical you could see it as "so Valve took Dota from us so we take TF2 from them" but I think its more along the lines of Titan was a mess and this 6v6 pvp arena mode was the only fun thing worth salvaging

Tf2 is not an esport, its a horrible title for competitive play and very few people try. Its still immensely popular as a casual game though. Problem with blizzard games is everyone tries to force them as esports so we'll see how it goes.

But if you are a competitive player on steam you are playig csgo not tf2

Might want to just link your Rule34 before someone gets fired.

They claim that there will be more things to do than "put crosshairs on people" as they put it. Also, supposedly you'll be able to stay alive a bit longer to actually use all those neat skills. The gameplay videos looked more like tech demos than balanced content, imo.
If the porn isn't high res you can't get horny, but you can hate a guy at 1000 paces without a scope. That's human nature.
