Looks like high budget Power Rangers. Might be a fun movie.

Looks like high budget Power Rangers. Might be a fun movie.
I saw Del Toro in the opening and got legitimately excited, then it just looked like transformers vs monsters
GlaDOS!? Take my money!
design blows but Idris Elba...hell yes.

I'm 12 years old again and cannot wait.
FINALLY A ROBOT JOX FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
I so hope this film does well.
Sorry, movie looks stupid. Can't believe this guy dropped the Hobbit and a billionzes of moneys for this donkey shit.
Tell me this isn't Guillermo del Toro's backhanded attempt at his At the Mountains of Madness project, for the love of Old Gods.

This movie is either going to be badass or complete donkey shit. Don't think there's much middle ground.
Looks badass, but I thought the same based on trailers for Battle: Los Angeles.
Still, the talent here gives me a bit more hope.
The guy knows how to make movies.
On a lighter subject. The porn parody? Easy "job" with the name.
I love movies like this.... when work or school is stressful, maybe just life in general, just go to movies like this and enjoy the you know what out of them. I think it looks pretty good regardless. I can't see why it wouldn't be worth a matinee' price..?
Robot Jox + The Abyss + Jax Teller = Win
Well it looks entertaining, that's for sure lol. I mean, Giant robots vs. Giant aliens! What's not to like? The guy is a talented filmmaker too, he has done a very good job in all of his movies that I have seen.
Robotech v. Cthulhu and the Old Ones. Will watch.
Holy fucking shit, I can't wait. This has shot to the top of my must-see-in-theater list.
It's not that he couldn't get the money for Mountains of Madness, it's that he couldn't get the money for an R-rated movie.
so is Del Toro ever going to fucking finish the Hellboy trilogy? perlman isn't getting any younger.
this movie looks like it escaped from the 80s. not a bad thing.
Can't really see much of a story line for this.. though it's rather going to be extremely bad ass, or it's going to be Battleship meets Godzilla.
But I read something recently where del Toro said he was interested and Perlman had come back into the fold. I don't think it is likely given del Toro's shooting scheule seems booked out to like 2017.
Hell yes, this movie looks like fun.
Always been a mech fan, I don't even care.
Bout fucking time we get some big battling bitches.
Although part of me is led to believe Glados will kill the humans anyways.
Im not overly excited but this seems to be getting some pretty nice buzz. Del Torro, Elba, and Hunnam...i guess it could be worse. We will just have to see.
the big question i have right now is: there will be lots and lots of portal inside jokes? because the potential is there. And if there are, i'm so going to be the only one laughing at the them at the cinema because i'll probably be the only one catching the references
Even if the movie overall is mediocre, at least we can be comforted by the fact that it will be visually amazing. That's one thing Guillermo del Toro never fails at.
SHit getting fucked up Godzilla style
Video Game culture getting nodded at ie. glad0s
Helping this movie do well directly ensures Mountains of Madness gets made
What other reasons do you need to see this Jesus Christ
i was already sold at Giant Robots
Del Torro, have you been Inception-ing me? Get out of my head.
Robot Jox + Voltron + Evangelion
evangelion would've been more interesting.
bro, if you can't appreciate art, there is the door.
Do you defend ME3 and indoctrination?
FF8 and squall dead?
Looks pretty good overall. Pretty damn stupid though to make the mechs require two people to make them work.
HI guys, after seeing the trailer for Pacific Rim someone posted in the Screenshots thread I noticed something
Does anyone here know the RTS-game Metal Fatigue? You were controlling the normal units, tanks, planes and so on, but also thess huge robots, called combots. That game was fucking awesome and I loved it. Anyway, the whole concept of the combots is basically the same as the concept of the huge robots in Pacific Rim.
I mean, huge robots are hardly anything innovative, but the way you steer them with your own body, the female AI-Voice helping you control them and so on, its just basically the same.
So shame on you Guillermo del Toro for ripping off one of my favourite games! Also, awesome game, you should definitely give it a try.
And jokes aside, looks like a fine movie
Here the Intro for reference:
Showed my nerd brother the trailer. He was interested, then he saw them suiting up and said in a high pitched hopeful voice "giant robots??" then they showed them and he threw his arms up. "Giant robots! Finally!!".
I like the part of Evangelion where the studio ran out of money and characters stood around in elevators saying nothing and not moving. Art. I also really liked how at the end of the series Shinji has a major breakthrough but someone accidentally bumps the reset button for The End of Evangelion so he can go back to being completely and utterly useless again.

i forced myself to watch the childhood mind rape of the horrid bay transformers, cuz i'm a child of the 80's, at times i could barely tell which robot was what, and while i didn't want the robots to look like generation 1 characters, i at least wanted them to be discernable. These robots are awesome...

I feel as if this is a "Come at me, bro" challenge to Michael Bay.
Michael Bay's robots were uninspired pieces of shits.
I just watched Godzilla Final Wars
I miss big ass monsters fighting each other. I'm even more excited for this movie now
American take on giant monsters: Godzilla, Cloverfield.
American take on giant robots: Transformers.
I fully expect Pacific Rim to continue on that glorious trend... I don't see it being a Super 8 or an Iron Giant.
Saw the trailer on Friday while waiting or the hobbit. Really don't see what every one is getting excited about it looked terrible.
Yeah, well, that's just like your opinion, man. And it's apparently a terrible one at that. Who doesn't love giant robots vs. giant monsters? Come on now.
I have this strange irrational fear of the ocean and also a strange irrational fear of large sea creatures coming out of the ocean. When I see that shit, it always makes me shutter and feel a little nervous; seriously, no joking.
However, after my initial 'shit-my-pants' moment, I realized this looks badass. Can't wait to see this.
There's an interview somewhere, but it is stated by del torro that it is TWO ppl that control one mech/robot, basically they have neural linked gel or whatever, and one guy controls the right and one guy controls the left side, and they sync together, so 2 guys one mech bad joke in, and we're done with it.
the reason why i believe some of us are interested in this movie, is that even tho it is in the genre of "giant robo" it brings us back to our "80's" sensibilities, where most of us watch afternoon re-runs of godzilla on tv and couldn't get enough of it. Or for even some younger (kids of the 90's) they're back to watching the power rangers again and they have that awesome feeling of just sitting in front of the tube, yea that sense when we called it a tube, it was that long ago.
For most of us, who now have 92in movie projector's at home and 7.1 sound, we can't just pop in any old "giant robo" movie to give us that feeling... ever, we grew up, we're waiting.
like many have said,
bay has raped our childhoods of transformers, the mechs/robots are horrible and at many points unwatchable, not only to mention that for a 2hr movie, we only get 10-15minutes of mechs anyway?
and before bay, we had the america godzilla, ugh... I remember watching gattaca in 1997 and the trailer for a destruction movie popped up and then you just saw godzilla open his eyes, i think that was the first time i showed a gasp to my then gf (wife now), and this was 6 years after i saw my last godzilla movie at 12 or so, so it was like... wow an american made gozilla!, then i saw the movie =(
then cloverfield... wtf! it was a socialite movie that was 99% shaky cam
i think for us that liked this genre when we grew up and we're just expecting someone to give it the "reboot" or revitalizing that we need from it. Just like how spiderman 1 or 2 rebooted comic book heroes into acceptance (i mean the font is on the ps3!) or even later on, batman begins, we are all looking for our giant robo reboot.
i don't ever remember watching a trailer twice, much less 5x and going...
robots that don't suck!
and monsters that look great!
i think when we all saw the trailer and heard glados, we knew del toro was not fcking around. (he specifically got her, the voice actress to do it, she only ever does valve stuff)
Oh yeah Creature Double Feature. I definitely watched re-runs of this as a kid. Some of the absolute best awful monster movies you could ever watch.
i got a serious question for you americans. Both here and on other forums (and youtube too) everyone always compare this movie either to Evangelion or Power Rangers (or sometimes godzilla). Are they really the first and only giant mecha anime/cartoons you guys have been exposed to ? because in the late ì80, europe was invaded by dozen upon dozen of giant robots cartoons. Mazinger, Grenzinger, Ufo Robot Atlas, Daltanius, Gheiking just to name a few
that's where the giant robot vs giant monster genre has been born. Evangelion and power rangers are like....18 years too late
they have never been imported in USA ?
yeah no comparison to Voltron or Shogun warriors either. i guess its the age of the posters here
wasn't born when those got released, yeah, generation problem.
It's really about what ppl remember and the medium (tv) in which we watched stuff. In the 80's we got robotech(macross), transformers and voltron (lion and vehicle), these were the morning and afternoon shows, i think (it's all really hazy, i'm old). as far as saturday morning line up, i don't even believe there was a giant robo cartoon but the afternoon is where godzilla (along with other 80's staples like conan and stuff) would play, there would even be godzilla marathons for the holidays i think for like labor day?
i think it basically boiled down to what networks were able to aquire what rights to stuff, fox had saban which seemed to aquire as much giant robo as they could. I have no idea which networks played the other giant robo cartoons like robotech/voltron. (i don't think gundam was ever show in the us in the 80's early 90's, but i think wing gundam was, that's why that's popular)
then we had adult swim/cartoon network and they showed lots of anime/giant robo as much as they could get their hands on from 95 to 2003?
Things really started heating up around 94 that''s when saban bought some kind of tv rights and they made power rangers(super sentai), they kept on churning these out (i have no idea what, besides kamen rider and beetleborgs) by then i stopped watching since i was in high school, but it was on anyway since i babysat my nephews.
This is also right around the time of DBZ, at least DBZ on vhs, unless you "knew" someone (or you had a real chinatown) you didn't get to watch DBZ, which is also i think why most people refer to Evangelion as well, since it was one of the first giant robo animes to make it big, and cause a stir, right around when the internet was "getting somewhere". Then we have the internet and college, heck my anime club in 97 even held a theatrical showing of all 26 episodes.
This thread about amazing giant robots fighting crazy giant monsters has taken a decided turn for the gaystalgia.
Am apprehensive but hopeful for this.
so, if i show you this image you wont recognize even half of them ? you guys had such sad childhood :P
well half is kind of cheating if you're a gundam fan, they make up like the entire lower portion or 33%?
Only robot stuff I had growing up were Transformers, GoBots, Voltron and uhhh that's it.
It's pathetic how similar 50% of those robots are, and I'm not talking about the gundams. Yeah, my childhood sucked cause I didn't watch the same cartoon over and over with a different title.
Why does the Russian jaeger (Cherno Alpha) look like it has a bucket on its head? Lol, definitely the funniest looking one.
This looks like what I hoped Transformers would be.
I will be rooting for the Monsters fuck the Mech's!
holy shit...so much nostalgia....fuck...I remember playing with half of those toys at the bottom...
High res blueprints of the different jaegermeisterbots, including a European one I guess that wasn't posted.
If you look at the little cockpit blowup thing the one Asian robot has 3 controllers and the other Asian one only shows 1.
looks like it's from Australian
so we have, USA, Russian, Japan, China and Australia

we see the carcass of a kaiju on a carrier, so they can be killed, i think that was probably the first one. Del torro said that they bleed acid, i guess like aliens so they probably though we can't use rockets and bullets against them when they invade a city cuz they'll bleed acid and melt a portion of the city and ppl, so they built giant robo's to beat the monsters into submission.
to note that Gypsy Dancer is the only "Mark-3" one. The others are Mark-4 while Striker Eureka is a Mark-5 (and the one with the coolest look infact)
