Why Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is a last-gen game developed outside of Gearbox | Polygon
- Set on a Hyperion moon base in the time between Borderlands 1 and 2
- Play as 4 villains for Borderlands working for Handsome Jack
- Wilhelm (the pushover mech boss from the train
- Nisha (sheriff of Lynchwood)
- Athena (from the Secret Armory of General Knoxx)
- Oxygen tanks as a new resource: used for hovering, double jumping, and ground pounds
- Coming to PS3, 360, and PC in 2014
I'm kinda-sorta excited for this? The gameplay looks super similar to BL2, but I really liked the story/characters that the writer Anthony Burch created in that game. So I trust that the backstory of these future villains will be quality.

Athena was working for Handsome Jack?
How does anyone not play as Claptrap in this?!?!
So if Gearbox is not working on this and they said they haven't given one actual thought to what happens after Borderlands 2...what is Randy Pitchford actually working on right now? Is the main studio completely consumed with Homeland reboot?
Why gearbox would not do another BL game is beyond me. Both the first and second were like best sellers.
I'm a little scared that it isn't Gearbox working on this but I love me some Borderlands so I'm in. It's a bit surprising that there is no Siren, unless Athena was one, but it doesn't seem like it.

Will this be a full $60 game or kinda like Metal Gear Ground Zero $30?
The DLC quality was all over the place. Still need to do Tiny Tina's though.
Yeah I liked both games. Even cooler is the co-op. Ive spent many hours in this world, and so did my kids.
New might be fun. or, Helena got killed offscreen by Jack. so... maybe showing how exactly she provoked him. Although, that was seemingly random, and had nothing to do with the moon.
"Between the events of Borderlands and Borderlands 2, Handsome Jack steals the Vault key from Tannis by torturing her "ceiling chairs", including one she had developed feelings for, intending to charge it with Eridium to open another Vault containing an ancient Warrior. Roland contacts Tannis, inviting her to move to Sanctuary. She accepts out of revenge for what Hyperion did to the chairs. "
hrmm. it could be Tannis. And that might be amazing.
Will buy it simply for Burch's writing.
Always loved the Borderlands series. Hope this one is just as good

Antagonist could be Lilith, Angel, Tannis, Moxxie even (they dated.)
Calling me a Cunt is a lot like calling Hitler a Nazi, it's not exactly received as the insult you were intending.

I don't see how Angel could be the antagonist. She is, at best, subtly working against him up until the point where she sees a chance to be set free. She's never really directly opposing him until right before you get the chance to 'save' her. Tannis or Moxxie being the antagonist would be fitting and pretty damn clever.
I still think the story of BL2 is fucking awful compared to the original.
Hm I really liked the storyline in BL2. I don't even remember BL1's.
Could see the antagonists being the original cast. Didn't Jack think Lilith was dead before she revealed she was Firehawk? They also got their asses handed to them by Wilhelm so it would make sense for them to show that
So far they've only mentioned O2 in regards to jumping and such, could be assumed you have infinite to breathe just need the extra for the extra uses.
Note: In the one video, Wilhelm only looked partially robotic to me.
No they mentioned that while out on the moon you need it and when you run out you begin taking damage.
And Wilhelm is mostly human in this, he doesn't turn into mega robot until later one would assume.
Claptrap though...I'm sure there will be some overly obnoxious Boarderlands'esc reason for it.
Having Claptrap come up with a reason why he needs oxygen will probably be pretty damn easy...
Yeah, he's a fucking moron and thinks he's a human. Him being retarded has been a perfectly good reason for a lot of his decisions and actions so far.
He forgets how to use stairs between 1.5 and 2. Because retarded.
They seem to be making strong implications that it'll be BL3 for next gen, that the engine and art style would require tons of effort to make a PS4 version with very little noticeable gain.
Didn't the first BL take years development? With multiple scratched phases or re-development? I'm sure we won't be seeing BL3 on the new gen consoles for a while.
Of course BL3 will be on next gen. The dude in charge of Gearbox said they are not even thinking of making the game tho, at this moment because it needs to be done right. It's not even on their radar
They would never talk about a current gen BL3 game when they're trying to get people to buy this game for PS3/360. Even if they were halfway through development for BL3 on ps4/xbone but we won't hear about it until this game has been milked for all it's worth.
They talked today at PAX about how they wanted the full budget of the presequel to go to content and not "learning how to draw triangles on new hardware". I do get the impression that Borderlands 3 will be next gen however.
And in typical Gearbox generosity everyone at the panel discussion today got a free copy of the presequel!
Wonder if they will have this for the PC, because the PC version of both BL games are way better and you can play them on the Rift.
Pretty sure they were the first to do the small group mmo design with "local" play.
Suprised more devs don't do that, but everything needs to be online now. "rolls eyes"
I saw an interesting article recently defining the benefits of adding local game play content to games, and why they should bring it back.
I don't trust gearbox as far as I can throw these assholes. (Thank Pitchford)
Who knows who is working on it at this point. Pitchford brought unethical behavior in this industry to a level never before seen. Or imagined.
If there's anything I've learned about the tech industry it's that quality product trumps everything else - ethics be damned.
Day 1 purchase for me. My son and I have sunk so many hours into the BL series it's scary.
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel Skill Trees
Game has gone gold and the skill trees are published. Claptrap's trees look amazeballs, as does the comedic value of his action skill. I am definitely going Claptrap
Gold for "all announced platforms".
I guess I'll play Athena, she looks pretty nice with the melee stuff. Claptrap looks kinda like the support-y char and not a fan of the amount of random stuff on him but guess can be pretty hilarious at times. Not much interest in the other 2.
Nisha looks the least interesting to me. I'm kinda sad they don't have a berserker type class as that's what I played the last two games (Brick and Salvador). Also, no sniper tree anywhere?
edit: I guess Nisha is supposed to be the berserker type with her active skill? Not a fan of auto-target

Probably will just Day1 this game. These games are just so damn fun.
One week away and this is not getting anywhere near the press I would have expected. Sure it is essentially an expansion for Borderlands 2 sold under its own SKU, but given the scope of the thing I would have expected it to be treated with at least as much hype as the triptych of Starcraft 2 releases...
It's being developed by someone other than Gearbox, I'm reserved about the quality of the game. I'll let you guess which BL2 DLC was not developed by Gearbox.
The faggy hunter one? Cause that was the worst imo.
So this is coming for PS4? Good lord...
So now I have to buy two copies of this, then two more GTA4, then new Battlefield Hardline, then the new COD.... Fuck this is gonna be expensive ass holiday season for me :C
I thought the only DLC that Gearbox did internally was Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep? I know Randy Pitchford made a big deal about it being done by internal Gearbox when it was released.
Captain Scarlett and Sir Hammerlock was outsourced to Triptych, Mr Torgue was outsourced to The Workshop.

Correct, and that's the only good one. The Torgue DLC was ok, but grew old quickly.
I didn't mind Scarlett or Torgue, although Torgue did get old quickly. Hammerlock was terribad though.
Maybe its because we didn't play Tiny Tina until much later, but we laughed our asses off when playing Captain Scarlett and Mr. Torgue and just found the last one to be "okay".
Really? I bought them all much later when the season pass was complete and on sale. I played them through release order and still found Tiny Tina the best by far.
The problem I had with Scarlett was reusing a very noticeable voice actor from another major character in the game. The humor felt forced and fuck that sand skiff.
I still have some hope for this game as Anthony Burch is the lead writer and I enjoyed BL2 and Assault on Dragon's Keep. Also, the concept of taking characters and watching them turn into villains as a prequel sounds interesting and ripe for some good storytelling.
If I had the time, I would day-one this game. But I don't, so I'll be looking to you folks to get your opinions on the quality.

I wish they would just go and make this into an MMO already. I would be so down for that. It what Destiny needed to be but wasnt.
Are they keeping the item mechanics the same as in BL2 ?
My problem is that most guns felt "off" in handling, which was intentional, but shooting things with inferior weapons just because the game was deliberately designed to do that makes me stop playing. Then there's the bullshit leveling formula where everything above certain level is nigh on unkillable and below not worth killing and +1 on your level magically fixes that. I felt that they needed some item customization really badly instead of being at mercy of RNG all the time.
didn't enemies scale to your level in NG+?
I believe enemies/loot would scale to your level for the DLC zones but I think all the storyline zones had pre-defined level ranges.
I feel like I am waay too excited about this but borderlands hasn't failed me yet! Also is there any point to getting the season pass right now ?
I want to pick this up but Grimrock 2 releases at the same time which should probably get me occupied for a solid week, and then FFXIV 2.4 update is going to hit soonish so I think I'll pass for now and pick it up later, hopefully winter sale(but not that likely, we'll see though).
I really loved BL 1 and 2 but was on the fence about this...I felt like it was just a cash grab. Then after the abortion that is colonial marines and then seeing the absolute asshattery from burch and pritchford during gamergate I decided not to pick it up.
