PC >>>>> PS4 > XB1
I own a current gaming PC
I own a WiiU
I own a PS4
I own a XB1
I will soon upgrade my PC to make it current
I will soon buy a WiiU
I will soon buy a PS4
I will soon buy a XB1
None of the above
The poll in the PC vs PS4 vs XB1 thread was created months ago and now the consoles are here, so I thought we could do a fresh census.
Handhelds are not included, and I'll let you decide in your heart of heart what a "current gaming PC" is (for me: able to decently play current AAA releases).
I will also let you decide what "soon" means (for me: before february/march 2014).
If you choose 'None of the above', let us know why!

I'll stick with my PC until something just as user friendly comes along where I can jump game to game to web to movie to music to porn to movie to game to web to rerolled. But the real future is....
I own a decent PC that I pretty much only use for MMOs and a PS4. I'll be buying a WiiU at some point, hopefully in late 2014 since X is currently TBA 2014.
I probably won't be buying an Xbone unless Microsoft really gets their shit together with exclusive games, but they have a lot to prove there after their horrible track record in the last generation.
Looking at the early number, I see the PC data will be a bit shitty because someone already chose both 'own one' and 'upgrade soon' which kinda makes sense considering with PC gaming there is a big gap between the power needed by the games and the power available with high end hardware.
I built a pretty beefy PC last year. Pretty much only use it for MMOs.
Got a PS4 on release day. Been playing some indie games and having fun. Mostly still playing ps3 (just picked up fallout new vegas since I skipped over it) until some big titles start coming in next year.
Been thinking about getting a WiiU simply for company.
PC none of the above.
However, If I was going to buy a console it would be a ps4.
And I'd probably pick a PS4 and never use it unless Tetsuya Takahashi or Yoshinori Kitase started making decent games again (just not much of a console gamer really)
I'll eventually get an Xboner, but not for a long, long while.
PC/PS4 and eventually a Wii U will do until then!
What am I looking at?
pc vs xb1? PC is left?
MWS Natural "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving black people approaches 1."
I said it poorly, really. The option for me is included. It's more meant "Primarily PC gamer, not excited enough about console gaming to really invest in it for the 1-2 games that I'd probably enjoy".
Bummer, but a good reason.
Here's a vid I made last night that was captured on the Xbone...even with shitty youtube compression and 720p it looks better than that right screenshot. I'd have said it was Forza 5 on left and Forza 4 on right if I had to guess without being told
Own a PC, will be buying a PS4 sometime in 2014...probably around Destiny release.
need a custom option for utnayan, "I will tell everyone X sucks for dozens of posts then buy it quietly a week after launch"
PS4 here. I'm happy with what I have. I may buy a Wii U later down the road.
Utnayan: Proof that Twitch integration is a huge deal with systems from now on. Even better than just word of mouth, seeing people playing and having a good time draws some categories of consumer to your product like flies to honey.
None of the above for me. I use my PC to play dota2. I'll probably eventually pick up an Xbox One (that's what my friends went with), but not for a year or two.
Currently just own a 400 dollar laptop for p99/Eqmac but have almost all the workings of a decent comp minus monitor in my room, just no real need to spend money on it. Probably gonna do it with my Christmas bonus.
Roommate is buying a ps4 soon so no need to buy a console.
Sulm: You might be waiting a while on those PS3 titles - there's no word on how much of the library will stream nor any absolute of when.
Currently own everything but a WiiU and have zero plans to ever get one. PC can run BF4 at 2560x1440 with a good framerate on low graphics (no point in running anything higher, putting yourself at a disadvantage if you do) so I'm good in that department.
Just PC atm(which will get upgrades come black friday/cyber monday). No reason to buy a new console yet but when I do, probably get both.
I only play Starcraft on my pc lately. Have a ps4 and that will be all I buy until they reduce the wiiu price. No need to buy an xboner
If no tempting exclusives for xbone are out by the time Ground Zeroes drops, I'll be getting a PS4.
an understated ensemble that puts the "b" in subtle
127 people voted. We can do better than that!
I have a pretty current PC rig and I own a PS4. I might upgrade my PC a bit early next year, but other than that, I'm set for now.
I'm pretty sure the wife is picking up a PS4 for X-mas. Maybe the kids will get some use out of it, I end up playing maybe 3 console games a year. If they release some Uncharted type games I'd be all over that, love those :P
For all you suckers picking up a Wii-U, see if you can snag Zombie-U for cheap; If you like the original Resident Evil at all it had a good RE vibe to it, and the tablet actually added to the gameplay and wasn't just a gimmick. Story was meh.
Have a pretty dated PC. Upgrades and PS4 purchase both pending some as yet undetermined point. PS3 / Steam indie backlog is still huge
Waiting for PS4
Don't give a shit about a xbone or wii.
Have a gaming PC and a crap ton of Steam games I haven't touched. (yay winter sale to add to that...)
No desire for a Xbone.
Will wait for the Swaystation until GoW/Castlevania/GT, even though the last GoW and GT were slightly disappointing. Also waiting to see what some of the top indie games end up being.
Actually most excited to buy a WiiU whenever more Nintendo exclusives are released. I'll probably pick one up when I see a couple more of the following: New Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, Metroid, or DKC.
Neither console currently offers me anything that my PC can't already do. I'll most likely end up picking up a 3DS soon as it actually has games I want to play. I might pick up a PS4 in a year or so if it gets games I want, otherwise I'll just throw that cash towards a new vid card. I won't ever buy an Xboned until it's priced competitively and a SKU without kinnect is released.
In the process of building a (current) gaming PC as currently I only have a laptop w/ a mobile amd gpu. I am waiting for my case, which should be here mid-dec, to arrive and for hopefully a few decent deals before then on a gpu and few other parts still needed.
NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case
Pic showing next to coke bottle, mmmmm sexy.
Should be picking up a PS4 near release of Destiny if not slightly sooner.
Already have a PS Vita and will not be getting any other consoles.
This is probably a question better answered when there are some games worth playing that aren't on another console already. Last time I bought a console on release day, I couldn't play games towards the end of it's life due to incompatibility. Thanks for nothing playstation 1.
Until then I'll stick with my gaming PC with my PS4 reserved for exclusives and playing stuff like The Division with friends whose PCs won't be able to handle the graphics.
Currently have a dcent PC, and neither my 360 or PS3 have seen use for gaming this year so I decided not much point in buying either.
I have been eyeing the WiiU now that the price has been dropping and a few Mario games are bundled, I'm wondering if we might see a sub-200 WiiU for Black Friday.
I will buy a PS4 (or XBone, I don't really care) when Final Fantasy XV is released... And only if it is good.
I'll likely wait until next Black Friday for the next gen stuff. My PC handles everything just fine, and I have a huge backlog of games to play on top of working 6 days a week.
Dark Souls 2 is the only thing I have a hard-on for in the coming year, and that's not being released for the next gen.
I've developed a habit of just watching sites like cheapassgamer and slickdeals for sales, so I don't mind waiting patiently.
Kaige#1128 - Battle.net
Kaige - Steam
yeah. pc gaming all the way pretty much.
Its not out of a hatred of consoles, so much as a time issue. While there are a few console games that are interesting. it is very few. yet at the same time, my Steam backlog is huge. And on top of that never ending games like League of legends, GW2 PoE, Gnomoria, etc. i can play these games forever. as it is, I kindof jump around between them at any given time, as I don't even have time to play each of them. I'll play one for a bit, then get sidetracked.
PC games I can at least multitask more readily. granted, I did get a tablet just so I could keep an eye on emails, from the living room.
yeah I have to remind myself my ps4 is just there as a backup in case my PC dies, because in the past week I have turned the ps4 on for a grand total of maybe 1 hour new zelda 3ds game is hella fun though, with headphones on a great way to chill out in bed before going to sleep
its a bummer that gaiki streaming stuff didn't come out at launch, I would be more into ps4 if I could go back and play the ps3 AAA games I never got to try like Last of Us and Red Dead Redemption and Kingdom Hearts
I bought a Xbone and the thing really feels half-baked. No USB drive support, no ability to play media, no connection to home (Windows) PC, weird auto-save integration and game pausing that seems iffy (BF4 save games all gone), voice controls that workd 70-80% of the time, strange voice functions (like if I say Xbone On, it turns on, great. But I still have to press the "ON" button on my controller to play a game...which also turns the Xbone on...so wait why am I doing this again"?), miles crappier graphics than my PC - and this thing is supposed to have an 8-year cycle?
I'm going to get a PS4 eventually because that's just what I do, but right now I kinda have to laugh - there's no rational reason to buy either of these if you have even a midway decent gaming PC or even a last-gen console. I got it with eyes open and expectations low so I can't say I'm really disappointed but there is very little "next gen" about it so far. I think it will grow and eventually become more interesting, but it clearly got pushed out the door before it is really ready.
Oh yeah, plus, PS - I live in Canada so the TV integration sucks. No guide via xbox. I knew that too it's just kind one more lame thing.

That sounds nice if it's as painless as implied - had so many problems with DLNA recently throwing them from my PC to PS3 to stream videos. Still having fits getting Day of the Doctor to stream currently...
It took me a little bit to get it figured out, and if you don't have the video app running on the xbone then windows won't give you the option to play to it (so you can't use the play to to start it up) but outside of having to queue up everyone you want to watch in one big playlist if you don't want to have to go back and forth to your pc it's not bad.
I'd still prefer to be able to stream from my NAS but this works and would be something I would be happy with if my TV wasn't able to stream from the NAS itself
I am planning on purchasing a ps4 or xbox in the next few months and I was wondering how to connect it to my monitor.
I use a 27" 1440 computer monitor and I was thinking I would be able to use an hdmi to dvi adapter and be fine, right? Not sure if there would be any issues with the 1440 part. Also, instead of having to connect / disconnect the dvi cord every time I want to use my computer would I be able to use a switch / splitter? Never have had to do this before.

Nintendo exclusives (Zelda, Mario, Metroid, etc.) are the only consoles games I feel I need to play and miss out on majorly if I don't. For me, the reason Nintendo is still the best is because they try to offer an experience you can only have through console gaming. You can't play those games on a PC or any other device. Everything else I want to play I can do so with a decent PC and Xbox/Playstation controller. For the Xbone and PS4, I was hoping they were going to up the level of innovation as far as how the motion sensor works with games, but it seems it's still being used as just an optional peripheral device. It has a bunch of interesting functions, but doesn't really have a major impact on how you play games.
beyond that, you can solve the multiple input problem with a sound system or even an xbox one. Many of the newer sound systems have multiple HDMI ins and one HDMI out, so you can hook up your monitor to it and then have 2-5 HDMI inputs that you switch between. Even small soundbars like vizio etc support this.
I'm not a MS guy at all but I'll reconsider if in a few months there's no "PS4 media server". 95% of what I do with my PS3 is stream/copy video files. All sony had to do to make me buy a PS4 is robust streaming (including MKV) with fast video playback/fast forwarding. But yeah.
Atm, I own a fairly decent pc, as well as a ps4. I'm thinking about picking up a wii u as well. Since most games are multiplatform anyways, and no xbox exclusive interests me at all, I'll be passing on an xbone.
I've been playing the new Zelda on 3DS this weekend and it's kind of funny that I'm enjoying that game more than anything on my Vita or PS4. I wish Nintendo would just be a developer/publisher.
you know what i was slightly leaning more towards console, more friends that play on it etc etc can lay on my couch be a lazy asshole, but then i went to my brother in laws house, played some ghost and was completely underwhelmed it looked like CS:source, was smooth as balls but a low end gaming PC can out perform that door stopper, so ill be going with a new gaming PC this cyber monday.

We have 236 votes at the moment and I doubt the proportions will change much from there.
Unsurprisingly, considering the history of the board, PC dominates. It might be helped by the fact that even PC that are three or four years old are still 'current' because of multiplatform development. The good chunk of people that plan to upgrade their PC soon (even if there is some overlap with people who own a currrent PC) shows that this PC dominance is here to stay. With a new generation of consoles out, it might be that multiplatform games will be upgraded to the point a number of older configs will no longer be 'current', but we can only guesstimate the numbers for that.
More of a surprise is the adoption rate of the PS4. The previous poll that was created just after a very lopsided E3 showed a very strong interest in the PS4, but one would have a thought that a launch line up devoid of 'must have' exclusives would have delayed most of the purchases, but already a quarter of the people who answered the poll own a PS4. I guess the wait between generations made the 'fresh new toy' effect outweighs the reasonable 'I'll wait for a game I want' approach (even if the lack of a foreseeable price cut in the system does not make that approach that much more reasonable). You know the effect is strong when one of the staunchest avocate for the 'wait and see' policy decided to upgrade early after all. Another quarter is planning on buying one soon (a chunk of those probably being people waiting for black friday deals), so in a few weeks/months there should be over 50% of PS4 owners.
After their catastrophic E3, Microsoft was in deep trouble. They changed their proposition in a major way to remove most of the things that customers disliked, but it does not seem it paid off that well. The current poll was created just after the Xbox One launch, but since the huge majority of purchases are done with pre-orders, I think it's fair to compare the numbers with those of the PS4. As it stands, both the 'own' and 'buy soon' numbers are at about a quarter of the PS4 numbers. On one hand it was to be expected because they still pay for E3 and the spiral of negativity that followed, but on the other, they managed to launch with a strong flagship exclusive in Forza (3rd biggest exclusive brand behind Halo and Gears of War while Killzone is the 5th - a Forza sells about 5 millions world wide and a Killzone a little under 3). Now, it might be that the members of this board are less into racing game than the average public. Another factor is that I am not sure what's the status of wheels compatibility between X360 and XB1 and what's available for XB1 at the moment when it comes to wheels.
As expected, the WiiU fares very poorly, but the upside for Nintendo is that the 'buy soon' category is on par with the XB1, probably thanks to a number of recent releases of key franchises that had a very warm welcome. It's unclear to me if the release of the new Mario just when the new consoles are released is a good or a bad idea (Bad: people want new shiny toys, not the 1 year old machine. Good: the best new game is on WiiU and the console is available), but it could save Nintendo's holiday season.
It will be interesting to see how different from the general public this board is. I suspect the US numbers should be kinder to the XB1 and to Nintendo (currently there is 1.7 million WiiU in North America for 1 million PS4, but we have three times more PS4 owners!).
Tablet ! You fucking nerds !
Not everything on the internet is true - Abraham Lincoln
Szlia - I'm not sure how much of a Euro presence we have on this board, but don't forget that their PS4 launch doesn't happen until this Friday.
I assume it must be 10ish percent at most (what does Google Analytics say?), but it's true it might have an impact on the 'buy PS4 soon' category (maybe 7 or 8 votes that otherwise would be 'own' votes).
Another thing to consider is someone here would be much more likely to come into a thread with this title if they just bought a new PS4 or xbone.
Yeah, Sweden here and we get the PS4 on friday (well, those of us who ordered back in june or earlier, rest are fucked until 2014 with a teaser that "some" might come in december) and Xbone is on for a 2014 release unless you wanna pay 50% more for an UK import.
Its hillarious to read local forums tho, people exploding with "WTF I pre-ordered my PS4 at the begining of november, why wont I get one?!" and such gems.
Curious as I haven't really paid attention but ps4 only launched in the US I believe is that the same for xbone or did they launch in other countries also?
I bought a 360 for Guitar Hero. They stopped making these, closed due to excessive wealth? And after that, I bought one game every two years.
I hate console games.
PS4 launched in Canada and the United States and is launching this Friday in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom as well as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama and Peru. Add several asian countries in December (this list proved too hard to find, but it includes Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan) and finally Japan in February.
XB1 launched in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, United Kingdom, United States and New Zealand. They expect to launch 'as soon as possible in 2014' in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland.
Note that these lists are "territories" not countries, which means there are probably additional countries where the consoles are or will be available, but they are part of a greater "territory".
Nintendo can continue to lose their ass in the hardware market if they choose but there is tons more money to be made making cross platform games.
About music games:
I think they had a multidimensional problem with no obvious solution. One dimension is the gameplay: very difficult to make it evolve from a game to the next. Another dimension is the track list: people don't want to buy the same songs over and over after each new game. Another dimension is the cost: since the gamplay remains the same, you add instruments, but it adds costs (and storage space), people are not willing to spend again and again on plastic instruments and that route hits a dead end pretty fast (unless you want to create Symphonic Hero: Baroque edition). An other dimension is that the artists realized a lot of money was made on their backs and adjusted their royalties and some also sued the game creators over what they perceived to be misuse of their likeness.
I guess there is still room for a new version of these games every four or five years, just to integrate a bunch of new music, but that's about it.
Neversoft, that made the last Guitar Hero games recently made a multiplayer mode for CoD: Ghosts, Vicarious Vision that made the handheld version is now behind the iOS and 3DS versions of Skylander and Harmonix, that started the music game boom in 2005 with Guitar Hero are now doing the Dance Central games for Kinect.
PS: The golden goose lays golden eggs, it's not milked like a cow!
That poll is stupid. I own a PC and PS4. PC should be taken out of it. This is a console war, not a console v PC war.
Chain posting wuwu...
Searching for sales number of key franchises earlier, I noticed VGChartz has now a category for pre-ordered games in the US. I am not sure how reliable this data is, but it has the PS4 versions of Watch Dogs and Destiny at about 150% of the XB1 versions (and waaaay ahead of the X360 and PS3 versions).
i'll be curious to see what sort of stock Sony has for when they launch this Friday. Would be pretty crazy if they drop another million down in 24 hours.
Amazon.com: Rocksmith 2014 Edition - PC/Mac (Cable Included): Video Games
who am i kidding i'd never even open it
At todays exchange rate XBone is $700 and PS4 $630 (base console without games) in the UK.
Considered buying one of them for my 9 year old but all their games are on PS3 so I decided to get a new one of those instead for now. Just aren't any games out worth buying either of them for right now.
Have a PC I built in late 2011 and think it's still probably better than a shitty computer-console.
