Here I was trying to get Scott to start this thread for us.
Are people active at all on Rift? Would it take forever to get up and running in a top tier guild after being gone since the start of HK?
Here I was trying to get Scott to start this thread for us.
Awww -- you can delete this if Scott comes over
Taking a break, mostly due to guild issues. Zones are busy as hell though, and the expansion zones are amazing. Leveling was tedious, but it almost always is in expansions. Will be playing casually still.
I stopped playing after Hammerknell came out and pretty much everyone in my guild quit. Is the expansion any good/worth it to come back?
I barely hit 60 a few days ago after coming back a week or so ago (from a 3 month work related break). Leveling sucks, zones are pretty awesome though. THe few dungeons I've been in seem more mcdungeon than vanilla rift. The two new continents are huge, I haven't even been through all of both of them yet. I don't know, I'd say it's worth a look at least. I'm sure you could find a discounted box somewhere.
I really only keep playing Rift because I like the soul/job system and PvP. The PvE is uninspired and once you crack the 20-mans a few times, they also get very stale. For their first MMO, Trion's done an admirable job but Rift will be remembered in the annals of video game-dom as nothing more than a WoW clone. Personally, I feel that it's a disservice to the game, as I've played it for good stretches since beta, but not too far from the truth. The "rift" system is cool, but it's still just a gussied up PQ from Warhammer.
My kingdom for a Chivalry + DAOC + WH40K IP MMO.
Had to take a break before the expansion came out due to school (despite already owning the expansion). The whopping 10 minutes I have put into the expansion so far have been fun though.
Feel like I have had this conversation before elsewhere...
Anyway Rift is an amazing game for a lot of reasons. Their updates are great in general and they deliver new content faster than a welfare mother pops out kids. The soul system is a cool idea and can be done well, though for warriors right now it sucks and clerics are LOL overpowered. The expansion is phenomenal I would recommend it to anyone. Rift is more than a WoW clone it reminds me more of EQ2 than it does WoW personally. It is more than both of them.
Rift has its flaws and I can talk about those all day but for now it is not an exaggeration to say it is well worth the money.
I came back about two weeks before the expansion dropped and I'm having a lot of fun. I think Trion has done a solid job on this game since launch. I feel like there is a lot to do and with Rifts, Hunt Rifts, IA's, Chronicals, PA's that it's different enough from other games and they do it pretty well. I'll be honest, the fact that I can play both of my 50+ characters and earn PA's and it's account wide is pretty awesome. I finally started messing with the Dimensions, at first I liked EQ2's housing better but these are growing on me. I think if they added Flying mounts they could up my enjoyment a lot more but I'm sure that will end up being a bullet point on an expansion down the road.
The size of this expansion is amazing. Hopefully they start filling in the later zones with events though. At least on the Seratos side it started to get sparse past Seratos.
I've been in the expansion about a week now and am having a lot of fun. There is always plenty to do especially if you are the explorer type as the new expansion is HUGE. Quest grinding can be a little tedious though.
I am currently enjoying a second bout of playing Rift. The expansion is indeed huge. I still enjoy the rifts and events, unfortunately the I.A.'s in the lower level zones in the xpack are very underpopulated, I am often alone or maybe with 1 or 2 others. This is on Icewatch, a very busy Euro-server. Still, if you follow all the Story quest lines, and do some carnage and onslaughts on the way, leveling is pretty fast.
Also, I finally have to admit to myself that instanced housing just does not work for me. The only house that I ever felt some connection to, was my house in SWG on Naboo, simply because I had walked to the end of the world to find a cool spot with a view for it, and the house actually stood there in the landscape for all to see. (never played UO) I am not the decorating type so I guess people who like that can go wild with the Dimensions feature.
So I am giving this game another go after a long hiatus and wanted to see if there was a server some of us play on, and if there was guild I could apply to. Would be fun to go from 9+ years as a FoH lurker, straight to full on participation.
I'm in a guild that can't decide if it's casual or hardcore on Wolfsbane. I'd invite you but you don't want to join right now.
wish this free to download and free to play really wanted to try it sad it died down so quick...
got an mmo itch that needs scratching.

Finally, beginning on December 14th, former players may log in and experience the original game plus the entirety of the Storm Legion expansion for free. The promotion runs through December 20th.

How many active players does this game even have at this point? I gave it a go but I don't think anything could get me back to playing it.
I tried playing the xpac at release, leveling from 50-60 was so boring, what is the best way to level? I cannot do anymore tedious quest hub grinds... I didn't even get to level 51, 1 hour dungeon queues for dps, and 45+ for healer (chloro) was what killed it for me.
The best experience is hitting rifts and invasion areas. They just nerfed invasion areas experience though by about 40% (left mob exp the same) and some other aspects of invasions. I think they'll end up nerfing rift and invasion experience even more, as it seems they want to force you to go a certain path to level up and at a certain speed.
I've had zero time to play this in the last week. Not even sure why I got it, I have enough shit to play to keep me busy until the next millennium but for some reason I need MMOs and WoW is currently reduced to 3 days a week raiding + fucking dailies + keeping up enough consumables for the weekly heroic progression wipe-fest. I'll try to get more in as I can but I have no plans to raid or anything.
The main thing that destroyed my remaining game time was BF3:Aftermath and a friend buying me Black Ops 2 when I thought he was kidding.
The only thing keeping me in Rift is the ease of entry to PvP and the fact that it's not WoW.
"Rift: It's a lot like WoW, but it's not WoW"
"Rift: It's WoW with PQs and better gfx"
I played this for about a month after launch. I remember dungeons were horrible for melee souls, and groups were telling melees to swap to ranged souls. Is that still the case?
Rift's patching has been consistently the best in the business.
If I had more time, I would probably still be playing.
Rifts single issue for me is the combat/animations. It just fucking sucks. I can deal or like everything else but just can not no matter how many times I try play it. It reminds me of going from EQ to WoW and then for shits and giggles trying to play EQ again combat wise.. It really bums me out because I really wanna be able to like and play it but every time I try I play for an hour and just get pissed off.
It did not help playing GW2 either then trying to play rift.
rift is like the game that sounds great on paper and you really, really want to like but after playing a bit its just kinda... boring. Haven't played though since the days of HK, will try out the upcoming free week since I have a 50 of every class. haha, i wonder if the game will be able to patch from 1.2 or whatever to the latest version. Are xfers and stuff still all free?
Its too bad they stuck with fantasy+steampunk, I woulda been a lot more into the game if it was in a different environment.
You can put lipstick on a pig, but in the end its still a pig. I had more fun with SWTOR than this pile. And thats saying something.
I remember reading Scott's blog leading up to this game and felt like I wasn't the type of player he was making games for. I remember his one comment about open world dungeons being a waste of Dev time. Although, I enjoyed the first few passes of the 5 or so group zones they had when I played... It really go old fast. The game just felt so small. Even the capitals. That said.. I wish this team worked on a game like Vanguard, keeping with the "vision" of VG of course. They set the standard of how a Dev team should be working.

I'd say especially the capitals. They do not feel more like an outpost than a capital city.
Just started playing again after a little over a year of not logging in. I feel so damn lost with all the changes.
Anyone have any suggestions for class guides for Storm Legion? At the moment I have a 50 Cleric, Rogue and Warrior, but so much has changed in the trees I am really clueless as to which I want to focus on for a main and what to do leveling/soul wise. I was contemplating leveling a Mage to 50 to get back into it, but the only tree that sounded remotely interesting was Harbinger and after trying it out it seems so meh.
I had the same problem on my warrior - just head to the guide section of the specific class threads (Rift forums) to get some good ideas on soul builds. For your warrior, this thread is what I have been using as a guide for my solo grind build. I went from dying to one mob to killing 3-4 mobs at level (or one above) with ease. As for everything else, RiftJunkies is a great start. I have been having a blast with the new expansion. Mindless carnage grinding is more fun than expected, quests are entertaining and original, and the zones are really beautiful (the ruined city is my fav so far). I was in the "meh" camp at launch, but there isn't much else out there worth playing and this is keeping me very occupied.

I barely played a week of the first month, then I got tired of sleeping while playing and chewing on broken glass while traveling. Might try it again for the free week, but probably not.
1-50 feels like the longest, most boring piece of shit slog ever. They really need to add heirloom gear, or just boost exp gains. The expansion leveling is cool though, pretty much every mob you kill starts a new kill quest for that shit. You run around continents just grindin shit and pickin up bear asses.
I haven't played since beta and am giving Rift lite a try right now. Have a defiant cleric on Deepwood. Doing a cabalist AE leveling build right now, but trying to decide if its worth actually buying the expansion so I can give the Harbinger a try. I enjoy healing so harbinger/chloro seems pretty cool.
Is the game decently easy to get into for a complete noob? My highest is like level 16 or something.
It's easy enough to get along with button mashing for most classes and still come out on top. If you can't win, just leash the mob(s) and try again. Most classes have a Win Mode combo (though I can't remember what they were back when I played). I don't know if it's changed much since I last played, but I was soloing elites back then with pretty much any class, provided I used a reasonable build. I'm sure it's still the same way.
So, yes, I'd say it's decently easy for anyone to get into, but if you're posting here asking questions, you're already doing more homework than many of the people I played with who paid no attention whatsoever to the mechanics.
I picked up the expansion about a week ago for $26 and subbed for 6 months taking advantage of their winter subscription sale. I'm leveling a rogue, currently level 54, and really enjoying the experience. There are a lot of grinding type quests but as I am a butcher I am able to level that skill up quickly and make some serious plat selling the hides. I only do dungeons for the marks quest reward and then spend the rest of my time exploring and doing the occasional adventure.
http://www.gamesrocket.com/download/...rm-Legion.html $27.95 now but still well worth the price in my opinion. The CD-KEY was emailed as soon as I made my purchase so I then logged into my Rift account to add the key then logged into the game, updated and was on my merry way.
I don't remember what I paid but I had to get the full version, which is $10 more. And its looking like it was a huge waste of money because apparently I don't have the time or the urge to play a second MMO that I had three weeks ago. I blame 5.1 introducing more dailies, which means by the time I get my daily grind done in WoW I'm ready to go shoot people in bf3/bo2 or do basically anything but pick up bear asses. Did I make this post on THIS forum already? If so I apologize.
I did get some Rift in last night. I tried my "daily warfront is awesome xp" thing and lost all seven games. Four I played out to the end which was a massive fucking waste of time. I think now I will always quit out of codex because it takes too goddamn long. And you can see pretty fast who will win just by the number of heal-specced tankclerics each side has since most of the games are based on "impossible to kill cleric holds a ball while your entire team tries to focus him down and fails" or "impossible to kill cleric interrupts people trying to click a flag and solo defends against 5 people" This is why WoW converted over to "most people standing by a flag captures it" instead of clicking.
Are there at least new warfronts in storm legion where tankhealers can't win the game just by spam healing themselves while OOM?
Anway, I'm not 50 yet and the 40-50 grind is fucking horrible.
Last edited by Kreugen; 12-11-2012 at 05:07 PM.
To me 40-50 was pretty easy. Did you try that freemarch + vet pot spot?
Hit 48, got the in game email saying to start Storm Legion...The fucking quest loot is min leveled at 50. I thought Trion was supposed to be the WoW Clone that at least did shit decently right?
It used to not have a level restriction, then people started doing it at level 10.
They had to take over for end of nations to not just publish it, but finish it inhouse.
and end of nations game studio already had their lay-offs.
I know this is Thorny issue for Scott, and Lars Butler etc the entire FTP-Hybrid sub Models.
They always been against it, for many reasons, cause if you dont do it right ya get old school players, raiders etc that will quit cancel subs, cause they feel like its pay to win, or selling out.
But all Future MMO's are going to have Master this or Fail Hard, strike a balance between the 2.
Whats the freemarch-vet pot you speak of? I wouldn't mind playing again, but RL has me very busy right now, and I would have to see if I can play this without being in a raiding guild.
Welp, looks like 48-50 is really fucking fast in SL even though you can't use the new gear until 50. 35k a quest and shit, it's zooming.
2.1 Patch Notes.

These mother fuckers are straight retarded. 1-50 is fucking garbage, they should be buffing the exp rewards, not dropping them.* Random Warfronts no longer grant Storm Legion-level experience when completed between levels 10-49.
Well at least there's no need to PVP ever again.
Also, they....they seriously buffed the gank rogue build damage across the board? Do they even play their own game?
They appear to run a tight ship. No bloody socks there. With the new tax laws coming, trimming your staff saves you money.
Fuckin' idiots who voted Obama.
Yeah if you think business owners are going to hire more on a tax break? Nope.
If you don't think they will fire people to make up for any losses? Oh they will.
That said, a tax BREAK at this point might reduce the investment of hiring another employee, making the ROI higher, if the company was close to needing another employee to meet its demand. On the flip side, new taxes won't suddenly make you more able to service your demand, so the likelihood of firing employees is lower (particularly at this point in the business cycle where most companies are already running pretty lean and don't have much room to cut while still maintaining output).
At this point in the cycle, there are very few companies holding on to employees that aren't needed but still employed, unless it is sentimental or there has been something anomalous about their business or the company is facing pervasive decline that they did not expect. As a private equity guy (though I focus on growth rather than "financial engineering), I am plenty versed in when changes in employee headcount are needed. Never once has a particular tax entered into our discussion about layoffs or additional hiring -- it was about what the company needed to achieve its goals.
Don't take my word for it, here is Warren Buffett asking the question at the top of the op-ed.

I was speaking from what I've noticed from personal experience. I'll let the economists make the generalizations.
Take the political shit to the Politics thread if you want to keep discussing it.
Doesn't Rift have a free week to try out the expansion? Thought it started on the 12th, but it won't let me log into any of my chars.
Starts on the dec 14th Bro.
Play STORM LEGION™ FREE through Dec. 18
Storm Legion has already been called a "truly inspiring," "gold standard" expansion with "by far the most innovative housing system in the genre." Try it free from Dec. 14-18 when you join the Ascended in a march on the forces of Air and Death! Former subscribers can dive deep into Storm Legion with no restrictions, while anyone, including RIFT Lite players, can celebrate a huge new Fae Yule World Event and build in private or public, personal or guild Dimensions.
Try Storm Legion

Gah! one day early. Thanks
uhg, at 39 and pvp XP went from 60k (50% a level) to 7k... And here I thought they were making it bearable to start a new character and get up to speed to play the expansion.
Not sure how your cash supply is, but I got three tradeskills to 301+(not mining, foraging etc) on my tradeskill alt, and get 6 dailies that pretty much net me 1-2 levels a day alone. The weeklies are 80+k. Plus the free mats and reputation.
I am a little sadfaced that they finally added a level requirement to the new zone story quest, and retroactively stripped my level 20ish mage of her level 51 gear :P
Did 2.1 add any more dailies for the reps? Some of the reps are going to take for-fucking-ever to max.
I played way too many MMO's over the years to the point I was sick of everything, but somehow Rift has kept my interest. It has its issues and isn't the holy grail of gaming, but there is something about it that keeps many hooked. Ive been hard on Trion at times, but they are really dedicated to their game and no other MMO company has ever put out new content at the pace Trion does with Rift. I played WoW for years so my first reaction to Rift was that its basically a WoW clone, but it goes beyond that and carves its own niche in the MMO world. I dont care how many expansions WoW has, I would never go back after playing Rift.
Still on a break fomo the game, Warriors really took it in the shorts and I just have not felt like chasing the carrot again. They are amazing with the content updates though and if/when I get the MMO itch again I will probably head back to Rift.
And you'll be happy to know they are revisiting rogue damage (for pvp) and will be nerfing most likely.
Does the fact that I'm trying to do it do it for you?

See, with how they made defiler healing, I don't mind Rogues being able to put out that kind of dps because without it, a defiler-healer is nigh-unkillable. Trion needs to bring warriors up with both DPS and tanking with the other souls. Then they need to rethink the whole tempest thing. In short, it sucks and is not on par with Harbinger, Defiler or even Tactician. It's boring and very anti-warrior. I hate to say it, but they need something like WoW's Titan's grip or perhaps a reverse Herald of Xotli where you are the beast/melee and transform into some kind of limited duration rape machine.
I blame it on poor marketing / advertising, no one outside of major gaming forums knew this xpac came out. I have a few friends that when I mentioned recently purchasing it they had no idea what I was talking about. They need new players, and they were only marketing to people that have already played the game, or knew about it and didn't want to play it. And enough with the arrogant messages like "You're not in Azeroth anymore" or "Save a panda play Storm Legion" they are making themselves look bad.

I liked Rift a lot. Mostly because of the hidden candy on the ground. When you find the candy, it makes you feel good. Like that one hill around the canyon zone that's off the grid, but if you climb to the top there's a hidden candy up there.
EQ Beta B Tester.
I like candy because it's nice and I like it.
Is this worth picking up if you don't have a high level character? I'd have to start over from scratch to learn the classes again, I'm just curious if I'm going to get ass rammed by the Rift's like I did when I fell behind the curve do to my account getting hacked.
Both factions can now group/guild/talk to each other. Wolfsbane and Deepwood seem to be the highest iirc
Thanks, I'll make sure to roll on one of those servers if I go past Rift Lite.
Got my old account back and transferred over to Deepwood today, holy shit is it overwhelming with so many abilities.
Find macros for whatever class/spec youre playing. Their macro system rules and you can condense a lot of things into spammable macros
There are a lot of really great mods out there now. I'm a huge fan of Gadgets (target bars, buffs, whole lot of other stuff that's very customizable), and King Boss Mods should be used for anyone that will be doing dungeons/raids. Some links:
http://riftui.com/downloads/info298-SuperMeterSLE.html (damage meter)
There are some other good ones that track buffs/debuffs such as Karuul Alert, but I haven't used it. Happy with these ones. If you get to SL you will love Carnage Book (keeps track of Carnage quests in SL zones for you).

So this isnt bad to pick up for a fix?? I havent ever played WoW, was too into EQ2 to switch. This game always sounded great, I just didnt have the time to put into it.
Your mileage may vary. In my opinion it's the best MMO available right now, though I definitely have my issues with it, and Trion's team is second to none. Worth checking out, especially since you can get a box for under $10 with 30 days of playtime and that will be more than enough time to decide. RIFT also just won the best Expansion for 2012 from Massively. If anyone is interested in trying it out, here's my ascend-a-friend code: https://rift.trionworlds.com/account...=ascend_invite

I'm pretty sure Trion is fucked. I don't know who is going to buy/play Defiance and the show is almost certainly going to be terrible and canned after one season.
Rift expansion was awesome but nobody bought it, and I personally lost interest pretty fast. The RTS MMO was total shit and I doubt it's going to ever see the light of day now that they closed that entire studio. The company seems to be lumped with too much failure
