SOE needs to do this to EQ. But yes I'll sign up to the beta never played it back in the day.
Edit: Nevermind. I lost interest after my seventh username was rejected.
So Im sure maybe some, maybe many of you played this in the past. Well it seems like they are ready to roll out the graphical update they have been promising for the past few years. Beta sign ups as well.
A game I wish had had a lot more stable launch. It had some awesome ideas and did a lot of things first. I played the hell out of notum wars just because the pvp was so fun around those towers.
Yeah I played the shit out of this off and on for years as well. This is good stuff if it gets players back. It had its faults, but it was fun as well.
I'll be checking this out. Even though AO introduced the devil to MMOs (instancing), it had a huge amount of soul and the nostalgia induced by dat soundtrack is as intense as anything from EQ1 and UO.
Could you imagine if EQ did something like this? It could be the "next" big thing....

i always wanted to try Anarchy back in the first few years of its release. the stat system etc looked insane though. i saw some character stats in a sort of magelo-type window and, as an mmo veteran, it looked foreign and overwhelming to me. is AO even worth playing or trying? or is it obsolete and dead?
I played this for a bit about 10 - 12 months ago. About 5 minutes after logging in a guide showed up next to me and started chatting with me, asking if I had any questions about the game, and told me that if I needed anything to just let him know.
Good customer service, but then again, when your total player base numbers in the dozens I guess you can do that.
*Edit* one thing I hated about the game was the...I forget the term used back in the day...the way you could increase your stats temporarily to equip insanely overpowered armor. I know a lot of people enjoyed it, but for me it just cheapened the game. It was all about buffing yourself up as much as possible and quickly equipping super high level gear before the buffs wore off, and then never unequipping anything.
SQWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEE
Alright, who the hell opened up a chest and let the roller-rat out? Goddamn it.
(best solution for ninja looters, I loved it lol)
I always really liked AO, it just had too many bugs when it was released to stay with. If FF14 doesn't hold my interest I may just have to give this another whirl.
Getting Wrangles and mochi's to OE your gear.... ahh good ole days
LOL that WAS the best part of the game, just getting into that LV150 weapon at like LV90 was the bomb. Shit needed a solid calculator sometimes.
edit: a fully modernized AO would be kick ass.
Also, one of the most abusive leveling curves in MMO history. IIRC, L1-180 took x_amount of xp. 180-200 took the same amount of xp as 1-180. 200-220 took the same amount of xp as 1-200. Utterly abusive. There was one hardcoreish orgie who was L180 when I quit for a year. When I came back, she was L219 and still grinding it out.
There are plenty of daily missions at each level range that give a huge chunk of xp. You do not have to grind. Up until about 120 you are talking nearly a level per mission. You can do 3 in a day from like level 20. Drops give high xp missions too. Quests to get weapons and other gear. Shadowland keys. Alien missions for Axp etc. There is a ton to do in AO.
It is reasonably busy and a lot of the old established orgs are looking for new blood. As with any MMO you get out what you put in.
Remember hitting 220 on my first character, even people Id been pvping against for months from orgs we'd recently taken towers from sent me congrats because everyone realised what a massive pain in the arse it was.
Is the engine being polished up on top of the graphics? I have a huge soft spot for AO, it was my first proper MMORPG and I still miss the richness, diversity and depth of all it's characters. Perk resets to get imps on at 220 killed me though ><
So far unless I missed something, the update is really to make the engine fully compatible with DX9 and eventually DX10. It's mostly a terrain update.
I haven't found anything about new character models. If anyone has screenshots of new characters models please post them.
I logged in a while back and just couldn't stomach the characters as well as the constant nagging from some volunteer GM/Guide chick. I couldn't move ten feet without her asking me if I was ok.
Nah the got those too, They have been showing snippets of the character models for a while now on the forums.
is that a sign up? i signed up and it says im ready to download, is that the old game?

What ever happened to the grand story that was originally planned for AO? I remember one of their big differentiators from other MMOs of the time (read: EQ) was that they would have an epic story that would gradually progress and be told through videos and updates on the website. I remember seeing the first video and it was complete and utter shit. Did they follow through with this or just give it up when their subs plummeted after the shitty launch?
For a couple of months they made 3d vids episodes of rubi-ka's story line and there was alot of gm events at first that followed alot the lore story.
That's the one I remember! So, so terrible.
Longer... it was supposed to have been done in 2008.
If I remember right, they started development with one engine and switched to another (AOC) a couple years later.
I remember killing people in Omnitech with a negative trimmer exploit, even killed a gm. Was ranked Rookie after my little killing spree. Also exploited my pets. Your character would load in before your pet, when you zoned, all you had to do is pop another pet before the others loaded. Running around with an army of droids was neat. Never did get banned for any for it. Still have the account and the Rookie character, made back in 2001.

I have played this game off and on several times since it was released.
If anyone wants to get something going let me know. I can front some credits so we can get set some lower level straight or make a static group.
Yeah, Ill check this out during open beta to see how good it looks. IMO its not worth subbing for to get a chance at the leet closed beta. Last time we played I think it was like 2yrs back and me and a few buds got a good 2 solid months of fun out of it so Im sure we will again.
I've been playing on and off since the beginning (got my copy for free at the 2001 E3 - funcom employees were standing on a street corner outside the convention center with trash bags full of them).
I guess it's time to re-up all my accounts. And for this game, I'm glad to do it.
do i need to re-sub to be eligible? considering doing it anyway. i have been looking for a game to pay for
this is one of the only games i never lost my pw too. my transaction history is trippin me out.. solid in 2002-2004
fond memories of trash king camping with my buddies
I know this is a long shot, but I'd be willing to roll up a new character and level with a static group of people. We could do anything with the right make-up.
Anarchy Online's 13th? anniversary event starts tomorrow and lasts until July 11th. There's a bonus at the moment for subscribing. The game is kind of old but it has it's own lure/draw if you give it a chance.
How is it as a F2P game? I thought about trying it out again several weeks ago, but went with EQ2 instead. That didn't last long because their F2P is terrible.
I've had an account that has been on a yearly subcribe renewal. I think the only thing you dont get as an F2P (or...froob) player is access to the auction house + anything released in their expansions (gear that specifically states...Alien Invasion, Shadowlands, or Lost Eden).
Everything else is accessible. Level cap of 200 which realistically would take a while for a casual group of froobs to hit. I think their F2P model is pretty good because I don't hear a lot of complaints about it.
Yes, but is there a new graphics engine?
PSN: sugarmonkey Miiverse: Sugarmonkey Steam: ChefFragardee
It's quite tempting to give it another try with the new engine (when it actually hits live), but naked characters aside, it'll be hard to get back to the good times of AO without the people. Tarasque, tower wars, guild drama, Legion Factor, great memories.
The chat system in that game, one could probably wite an entire book on ith what you could do with it. everything from setting up your own vendor to running entie guilds with it including DKP.
I despised the retarded buffing-to-equip-over-level-items bullshit system that was prevalent back in the day.
AO was ahead of its time in many ways, but the combat was boring as hell and the pathfinding for pets was atrocious.
Hmm I'm trying to remember, but iirc that combat was just like every other combat out at that time. You had tank/healer/dps. You had skills from whichever skills you put points into and put those on a hotbar that allowed quick use.You still had CCs. It was all tab target/locked target. The only other game out at the time that I can even think of having a different system was AC(which iirc was aim based), everything else had the exact same combat.
I would kill for a AO with today's action combat systems :P

This is literally the only game I have never uninstalled on my machine once I take a break. I just know I go back every so often, get a wrangle, cast my Grid Armor, and kite the shit out of stuff 50 levels higher, than I am, on my Fixer. While dated, its still a massively awesome world.
Well, regardless, I'll be on my MP casting Mochams (Beatlejoose) while I run around on lower level characters. PST if you need some credits or buffs.
Also, the support beam was stupid. "Hey, in this super high-tech world of lasers, robots, and nanobots, lets run around and beat the shit out of stuff with a giant piece of steel."
I played a Martial Artist to 86, and it was (for the time) pretty fun. I haven't seen anything impressive with the new graphic engine (only seen their own screenshots though).
I miss playing my Grid Armor MK 3 Engineer and how stupid OP it was at the time. I literally almost cried of happiness when it dropped as it was the most sought after item in the game. Could've easily have sold it for hundreds of millions (which at the time was very rare to have such amount). I decided not to sell it and use it just because of the arena in one of the major cities (cannot remember the name) and wanted to slaughter everyone due to it OP'ness
I also miss my lvl 175 Sniper on my lvl 50(?) Agent before they nerfed the twinking due to Mochams, etc. Agent later had that cool trenchcoat thingy from that one raid boss (Terasque or something;pre any expansion). I remember grinding so hard for that floating badge thingy where you had to kill the huge robot and etc for. Was part of a large progression quest in which you would start out with a basic floaty-thingy and then more quests to get better stats ines over time. You had to kill this big robot, then the next phase you had to kill some roaming mob in some mountain area near Four Winds(?) dungeon?
I miss games with progressive spell particle effects. The more powerful and higher level the spell, the better looking the spell graphics became (more particles, more graphically instense casting), much like EQ had. However, AO took it to the next level as it had more progressions in terms of particles, not just the lvl 26(?) and 46(?) in EQ. I think there was probably 10 particle progressions by the time you hit lvl 200.

Grid Armour on an Engi? Don't you mean Fixer? I played a Fixer to about 150ish levels. I never found Grid Armour ever. Most people told me I was fucking crazy to play a Fixer without already having Grid Armour. =(
I saw GA drop once, in all the time I've played AO off and on. Never seen nullify sphere though, for my Nano-technician.

What was the name of that temple zone they added, had a max lvl of 60? Was at or right before shadowlands... Loved that place. Getting scythe on my enforcer was so good :3
temple of the three winds? lvl capped at 50 iirc
~ pro tip, get a RFFE (damage reflect buff) from a 150+ Soldier and any class can solo the Guardian of the Temple for the Guardian Tank back Armor drop.
I loved AO, anytime time I hear another MMO talking about "twinks" I LOL, you have no damn clue what real twinking is unless you played AO. In its heyday it had the funnest raids of any MMO.

Twinking a agent was loads of fun. Literally had to write out a plan for buffs/implants and then gear.
Trying to remember if there was a worse MMO launch (to date) when this one came out.
I built the fastest good gamin' rig I could, to try to help it out.
Was it the city of Tir where you zoned in on top of a vending store just to make it even more of a slideshow? I know they moved the port in at some point but the performance problems were soo deeply rooted they just had to wait for future hardware...
Kinda like Vanguard! Sorry...
Anyhow, as a charm slut in EQ I have to say charming with a 'Crat in AO was pretty fucking fun. IIRC I could use something similar to the Mocums (sp?) equipment trick to summon a nasty deep red con robot, then had TWO charms running and one was a guaranteed duration, but this is all IIRC cause its been forever. It was less 'pet attack' and more 'gonna have my people take care of this'.
This is tempting, very tempting, just not sure if I can ever pull the 'sock out of the drawer ever again.
It seems fairly conceded that I can beat any player 6 vs 1. -- Sam Deathwalker
Yea I'm playing a Crat now. At level 140 I was summoning a pet that was level 200.
You have a short random duration (4-5 mins or so) and a long duration (fixed 15 minutes) charm. With 2 hecklers from Elysium and a level 200 bot tweaked with some mechanical engineering tweaks for faster attacks and taunts...it's hella fun. Stuff falls over to you and all you're doing is juggling debuffs and watching charm timers. You essentially become support for your pets, which is neat.
So is this update actually out yet or still in beta?
Ultima, Eq, were almost none accessible the fist 5 days, shadowbane was frustrating as well. Saying worse to date for a 2001 mmorpg now is a bit on the edge after all we've seen. I guess i was in the fistfull of players who didn't suffered that much with ao's lunch. I had amd a-bit super overclocked, and we were the first one to see temple of the 4 winds on rubika-1. It wasn't perfect, but we can give mega credits for that game who introduced missions/instances, a great sci-fi story , and beautiful fucking music.Trying to remember if there was a worse MMO launch (to date) when this one came out.
I have no clue where my Crat is, will find out shortly. Would be surprised if hes over 50 and probably spec'd out entirely wrong.

Yea the music still gives me the feels to this day. I dont know, I've always been enamored with the game because I haven't played through it completely. Finding anyone willing to take some time to just...'play'...is hard if you don't know anyone.
Herv, send me a tell on Beatlejoose or Philbuster. I can get us setup and hell, I'll start a new character if I have too.

AO was awesome. I miss my 220 Ma with Experienced title or some shit. The game was epic, Tara/beast raids, grid armour, trying to find the right buffs to eq high level implants.. He'll even tower wars were fun
Tower Wars was great fun, until you met a neg-hp Nano Tech with Engi shields. Then you wanted to pull your face off.
This is one of those games that I wish that I had played when it released, like UO, but at the same time I don't think I could go back and play it again now. That's one of the reasons that I've always kind of hoped hat there would be a UO 2 at some point.
I really liked the crafting, the wrangling, the depth of the game in some areas. But since I played on and off as a froob whenever I need a vacation from EQ I never really got to the point that I had a solid grasp on how the game progressed and how best to approach it. I always felt like I was being pulled in multiple directions at once - partially in awe by stepping into something totally new, partially turned off by feeling lost and adrift with no direction, and partially happy to just go wander around aimlessly. I actually felt almost the same way when I first got into EVE and started roaming around lost as fuck.
I will say that in retrospect I don't remember seeing the massive rancor and hatred toward F2P/Froob players that you would later see in games like AOC whenever they would have F2P events on a limited basis.
I also liked the solo missions or whatever they were called as while they were kind of boring and repetitive to some degree, it gave me something to do.
Psihack, my org mate Damn this makes me want to reactivate but Im playing too much atm :/
Psihack, that mother fucker cleaned house last night on iPande loot. Got a TNH belt for super cheap and made someone else cry. This other guy begged him to let him buy it from him for millions of plat and he was, "nah, now I don't need an apf belt".
Logged in, my crat is lvl 75 and I have no memory of leveling him past 50. Man the UI sure looks to have changed. Will try to fumble around with it this weekend. Too busy to play ATM. Will send a tell if/when I am in though.
It seems fairly conceded that I can beat any player 6 vs 1. -- Sam Deathwalker
Hey Herv, if you're interested in starting a new toon so you can get the full experience of running Subway and lower level stuff...I'm down. It will give you a chance to acclimate back to the game as well. There are a few toons I have yet to try. Send me a PM when you plan to be on. I'll be doing some 4th stuff this weekend.
Due to the severe lack of MMOs I desire to play and nothing on the horizon to get excited about, I'm thinking of getting back into this (yet again...5th time).
Are the servers still a ghost town? Such a shame, I have countless memories of this game. If Funcom had half a brain they'd make a sequel to AO.
They are basically merged now. I love the game and feel it's going to sunset soon so I wanna explore areas I haven't gotten into (mid-upper 100s).
Population was pretty decent the last time I did a stint in AO. I got into a big guild easily enough (by chatting to one of its members as I helped out on a daily). People were helpful even though I was way behind and I had a ton of fun.
It's free, just try it.
Apparently they went through and redid a lot of the perks to make leveling gameplay feel smoother, and increased exp/money from Missions. New newbiezone has a direct portal to Temple of the Four Winds, so that's nice. Still no updates on the graphics overhaul, despite them "working on videos" in January.

I rolled a new character anyways, just to play through some stuff.
What, no more 6 hour brown cave missions with orphaned slayer droids roaming around raping your face off when you run back after getting your shit pushed in from a 16' glowing pink Atrox enforcer boss that runs at you swinging a stun baton from the Demolition Man? Those were the days.
My fixer in his grid armor + Notum Wars = One of my fonder MMO memories and some of the most fun I've had gaming.
I jumped in to mess with the new starting zone on a froob account. Nothing big thus far... little more hand-holding. Don't know how mish action is now. Last mission I did on a froob took me 10 minutes to find the entrance... come to find out it is locked and I didn't have a lock pick.
Seems they are trying to get people thru the Subway and eventually into Temple (since its awesome). After that, no idea where someone would go if froob'n it.
If you get into missions, be sure to pick up MishBuddy. Really helps roll missions and look at rewards quickly.
Yeah, with how widely used the "roll your missions until you get the reward you want" software was used, I'm surprised they never just programmed that functionality into the actual mission interface.
They put their effort into nerfing the potential rewards you could get out of using MishBuddy instead. I used to play a Fixer, and spent a large part of my time in game rushing missions on contract for other people, and that patch pretty much ended the game for me.
Vorph#1334 - D3
I thought I'd reactivate my old account from 2002 and give this a go again. Rather than start up one of my old characters I've created a new one, and things are slowly coming back to me.
Once you've left the new starter area is the idea still to go to Omni Trade and Omni Ent and run missions? I've noticed Clicksaver doesn't work anymore, which sucks. Is there a more recent equivalent that works? Or is there something else I should be doing at low level?
