What, no white mages? That's it, we're all gonna die.
This may be the first MMO ever where in multiple polls I see people choosing the tank role in abundance.
I've played a bard in every MMO that offers one as a class choice, FFXIV will be no different. Bard 4 Life.
Edit: Thanks for compiling all the relatively useful information in one place!

Thanks for the maps. Those are awesome. I didn't realize how close I was to Ramuh the other day (there was some kind of vine road block in the way once you try to go too far east in that area though). I wonder how those work?
As far as class, I'm still somewhat undecided. I had planned on doing ARC/BRD; I love the class so far, but the armor looks super gay. I happened to level up LNC to 20 as well, and I enjoy it well enough (not nearly as much as ARC), but the armor looks awesome. Fucking tough choices.
One thing I'm looking forward to is seeing the end game unique job armours and weapons (they call it AF - Artifact). SE generally do a very good job with them.
(Following are from 1.0. No idea if they will put in different new looks).

I was originally going White Mage but I tried out Conjurer in P3 and found it boring as fuck. Played a few different classes in P4 and I think I will be sticking with the Marauder(Warrior) at release. They feel like a hybrid DPS/Tank class that can do respectable damage while tanking with slightly less mitigation as opposed to a Gladiator which felt more like a pure tank. Also, Battleaxe > Dagger+Shield.
For my alt class it's a toss up between Monk and Dragoon. I'm leaning toward Monk since their combat felt more fast-paced.
Edit: While I think the artifact armor looks awesome, I don't really like the idea that everyone is going to look exactly the same once they get to that level. I hope they will allow you to dye those but I'm doubtful.

The AF looks the same as 1.0 (and mostly same as FF11) - was grouped with both a paladin and white mage doing Ifrit who were wearing AF gear in Phase 4.
I feel like a game is doing something right with their classes when you see a wide distribution from the player base. Poll results are early here but looks like that so far.
This is awesome and what we have been needing. I have been fighting and fight to not play a healer but I think its in my blood to do so. Since 1999 i've been a healer, cleric, templar, etc. and every time I try to break away I can't stand not being able to heal or rez people. I voted Dragoon because it's my Final Fantasy crush but this is a MMO and a healer is just what I am.
Thanks for this post though.. +1 for sure.
Some of the secondary classes for jobs don't seem to make much sense right now. Black Mages get archer abilities, including a +15% DEX +20% physical accuracy buff and arcanist abilities, -15% STR/DEX debuff and a tank shield with a chance to reduce incoming damage by 10%?
I'm going black mage to start simply because I want to see shit burn. Tanking/melee is usually always my primary class in these types of games so I'm mixing it up and trying to new to start.
Thanks for this, very helpful to have all the resource links in one spot.
Lol mala, exactly. The only thing I saw useful as a BLM was Archer 20% more dmg buff, the acn heal and most likely at end game the 34 archer -hate ability. Not sure if 3 abilities is the norm or not. The debuff has a 60 second CC iirc, so maybe with a couple other classes that can cast it you might be able to keep it up full time(granted numbers will tell if that debuff even helps). The shield is a 3m CD for a 20% chance to proc a 10% dmg reduction for 20 seconds. The buff actually last 30 seconds. Somewhat useful(and arcanist get a trait that lowers the cd to 2 minutes) but I am curious if the proc stacks maybe, so buff is up for 30 seconds, if you proc it 2-3 times in that time(20% chance isnt huge) do you get 60 seconds of 10% dmg reduction. Could be really useful if that were the case.
Was talking to ZP during p4 and he was wondering if it might be possible for a straight thm to be more dps then a blk mage. Since a thm has a lot more cross abilities to use, especially the 30% crit every 60 seconds from Puglist.
You can slot the arcanist heal(which is exact copy of cure) as a BLM.
Physick (Cure copy) and Virus are the two shareable abilities Arcanist had under 20, so THM BLM definitely can use them. Just wish the *Black* mage had more shared abilities that were for... you know... damage.
I was going to bard but they look soooooo gay so now assuming the registration works I'm going g to try out warrior.
Still can't decide if I want to stick with my Dragoon, go warrior, or try out an archer. I kind of just want to wait for musketeer to make my RDPS.
Kind of torn. I wanted to do archer/bard, but it seems kind of boring/lots of dps players in general. I might go paladin or WHM after I get the chocobo quest done on my archer. Not sure yet.
I go tank 99% of the time but with all of the volunteer tanks this go round I'm going Dragoon.
I had no problem getting RR guild tanks to queue so I wouldnt have to wait last weekend.
So it sounds like bard is much less support now than it used to be, and is basically just a ranged DPS at this point (they do have the boost songs still, but it looks like the P3 players wanted a DPS and got it).
I think that may make me go with dragoon now.
Dragoon looks like an aerial 2h weapon type of melee dps from the end game Japanese videos I saw.
They don't have the option to pick up a bunch of pointless CNJ spells anymore. No idea how anyone could possibly see the bard changes as a bad thing. The design was just awful before this; they were never actually support in any meaningful way, and Internal Release alone beats the shit out of all the cross-class CNJ spells combined.
The next thing they need to do is get rid of the retarded limit break. There's absolutely no reason to have a dps class share the healer LB.

Great work on this Flight.
Odd this the DB site must be off then, still has Conj spells as BRD usable.
Even if you lose them though, your cure sucked balls, you never did protect(whm would do it since its traited for them).
Seems like the same class as before, you dps and then sing when the group needs it.
Something I forgot to add in my last post--if you want to talk about the support role, Mantra from 42 PUG is a far better tool for group support than anything offered by CNJ, even without the trait that PUGs get to boost it. Honestly, PUG has the best set of cross-class skills out of all the classes, and people are crazy to complain about getting access to them.
I wish my blk mage could use the 30% crit Get rid of all these shitty arcanist crap!
Just going to put a bunch of Reddit links here, for reference.

I'm really torn about what class i want to start as... immediately i wanted to go Paladin, on second thought I wanted to go white mage, and then i also want to try bard.. lol
Hard to decide
Anyone that got runs with me in open beta when I was on my Gld, dont expect that shit for awhile in live. I'm a monk all the way.
I was torn between my pugilist and lancer - both were really fun, but think I'll stick to the Monk path. Thought the stance dancing would suck, but it chains really well and just feels "right". Plus, I like the look of them aesthetically. Great thread!
Level you have to reach for each class. Also you want to do archer as BLM as you get some shared abilities from them(mainly 20% dmg @ level 4 and -hate @ 34).
How does levelling work once you get to a job? Do you only get exp for that job, as in if i get paladin when im 30GlD/15 whatever, and switch to paladin, i don't progress any further in gladiator until I drop Paladin?
Iirc your main class levels with your job? So you level paladin and GLD gets levels automatically. I think the subclasses are the ones you have to do separately. I may be wrong though.
Yes. Jobs aren't actually separate. Say you're a gladiator, you become a paladin by equipping the paladin crystal (or shard, whatever it's called). You're still technically leveling on your gladiator, you just have an item equipped in that slot that opens up and restricts abilities.
Kind of pissed that I got a CNJ to 20 last weekend for my bard. Now I'm going to have to level pugilist and lancer from 1 to 20.
Aleport here I come! (again.)
Yeah, but it literally takes like 3-4 hours to level a 2nd class to 20. It's not that bad, and honestly, it's a good way to understand what the other classes are capable of. Plus, you may end up liking one of the other classes better and decide to switch.
So... if you hit 30 as a guardian, get the paladin crystal, you're technically.. a 30 paladin? or are you a level 1 paladin.
I noticed those jobs that require level 30 seem to only start gaining those specific job abilitys from 30+?
Paladin is a job, so it's whatever level your class is. A bard would be whatever level your archer is, and so on. You level the class, and the jobs level with it.
Gotcha, i found that kind of confusing lol, Thanks
This Reddit post might help. Some of the info is wrong (like levels, it's actually 10 you can multi-class, and the sub-classes).
So despite the wrong parts, it's close enough to give you a good idea how it works.
Hopefully we have some aleport groups going this weekend, I'll just assume we will.
Well, to start you get 50% bonus exp. I did hunting log, class quests, and a little bit of grinding until about 10. Then a bunch of FATE's until 20. That said, apparently it'd have been much quicker to do FATE's until 15 and then do dungeons.
Maybe you're not reading it right, because the class switching is incredibly smooth. With the saved item sets, you literally just press a button and switch out an entire gear set. It even saves your hotbars for each class (and you can even setup cross-class hotbars that are the same across all classes). The only downside to switching is that it locks your skills for like 30 seconds or something.
And the only difference with jobs is you're essentially equipping an extra item (the crystal) to gain the job skills, while it restricts you to the sub-classes for that job.
The only thing in that description that is "horrible" is having to unlock the cross class skills. But if that sounds horrible to you, you might enjoy playing whatever game Sutekh ends up playing where you get a magic trail to your quest destination.
I bet they're going to nerf the +50% bonus xp for your non-highest-level class and FATE grinding. It's just too good and, I bet, not how they intended. Use it until you lose it.
1-10 or so, just do hunting log+FATEs, 10-15 grind groups or just solo grinding, more hunting log+FATEs, leves(maybe but I wouldn't waste them on pve). Probably the slowest part. 15-20 is just dungeons, with the bonus xp and doing dungeons on level so you get chain xp, you get 1level per run for the first 3 dungeons, which takes like 50mins(more if you have to queue as a DPS though). Also remember that once release comes you'll have access to combat chocobo again after the related quests, it speeds up leveling a lot since it adds fairly good damage.
Also note you don't really need 20 for anything specific. I don't believe any cross class skill is actually 20, could be wrong but it's case by case. You'll want 15 for sub class reqs, or you'll want like 34ish for all the cross class skills.
Also posting this here if you wanna add it to the OP, it's the spawning timers for the high level rare nodes. They apparently spawn at specific times of the day(ingame day, not sure how it translates into real time, I assume it's like 1day every 4-6hours or so) so you'll want to make sure to log in and loot them whenever possible. Don't really like the concept but it's what it is, at least it's not RNG spawns so it gives everyone an equal chance and also controls the number of materials that enter the market.
Last edited by Pyros; 08-22-2013 at 05:10 AM.
how is your main class determined for the 50% xp buff? is it the one you choose originally or the highest available?
Last edited by Tol; 08-22-2013 at 05:24 AM.
You bros talking up Monks makes me want to roll Monk now =\
Got a couple days to figure it out at least.
So, is scholar under-represented because we just don't know much about it? I'm thinking of doing a healer now that a few friends are playing, and scholar sounds fun (AE focused heals?) But I guess I have to play 30 levels queuing as a DPS class first? Any word on how they're expected to stack up with white mages?
Overall, they are a significantly weaker healer on paper, but who knows whether or not the full power of a WHM will be needed. For all we know SCH will be able to heal all the 4 mans just fine even with the buff fairy out, and they've already said that 8 mans are intended for one of each healer to be present.
Plus, any serious healer will have both jobs at 50 by the time the raids are released, at the very latest.
I know it seems silly but honestly I just have zero interest in a fairy following me around everywhere. It's the same reason I didn't like the druid in rift. Their AF while cool to look at (on someone else's character) isn't something I would want to stare at all day. I could probably live with the AF but not the fairy. No man no.

How to confirm if your account is approved for early access
Since SE's secure account management system does not show anything about FFXIV preorder registration, here's the easy-slash-only-current way to tell if you're good to go:
Launch the FFXIV launcher, and let it update if needed.
Log into the account you were able to get AND REDEEM a 20-digit code for. You should be prompted to accept a new license agreement slated to begin on 24 Aug 2013. Read, check box, click next.
You should then be back to the usual launcher start screen, and at the top-right above the "play" button it'll either say "checking" or something about having to wait for early release. Do nothing; let it sit for about 45 seconds.
If nothing continues to happen, your code took and you're good for early access.
If you are NOT good to go, anywhere from immediately to about 5 seconds or so the launcher will change to a screen describing that you're not registered for early access and will need to visit an URL for entering your 20-digit early access code (which is what you must use the 18-digit code at preorder.na.finalfantasyxiv.com to obtain, or wait for SE to send if you prepurchased from their store).
AFAIK this is the -only- way at present to know for sure that your PC-version early access is ready.
This is how it will look if you are good to go :
This is how it will look if you are not authorized for early access :
Posted this in the other thread, but it probably needs to be here too. Pretty much covers just about everything, plus it's got pretty pictures! (image intensive)
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn | OT | Naoki Yoshida uses a Phoenix Down
Also, yes, you're way over thinking it'll be a problem, you can't queue as a healer until 30 which is only a few days of leveling, but you can easily heal as one prior to that in a premade group , at least in the beta dungeons yes, you're only hitting 1 heal button, but it works well enough to keep people alive.
So I remember something about a tweet from the dev saying more people please play tanks ,
Are tanks overall the most needed class across the board it seems with healers second ? Considering just going full tank or healer (I like the idea of a scholar with aoe healing , and my 2 year daughter would go nuts watching a faerie follow me around).
Tanks are always in short supply.
Follow up to that question , for your class choices is there really much difference at all end game in regards to the race you pick ? I realize there's are racial stat differences , just wondered if they don't matter much over the long haul.
The difference is very miniscule, as your given stat ends up +/- 3(?) compared to the optimal value so it's basically a min-max thing (based on chosen final class/job).
As to Scholar, I imagine the majority of responses veered towards White Mage since their data was the most accessible (plus, Legacy chars could equip the job, iirc?) whereas Scholar is more or less unknown how it will play out in spite of the datamining of their abilities.
Yeah the race difference is basically a non factor, the most you could get between 2 stats is +/- 5 and that's one extreme case, rest tends to be 2-3. Even 5 though is nothing when you end up with 1000+ of the stat, the impact it has isn't even 1% damage or heal, it's probably like .2 or .3% which is absolutely worthless. Pick a race based on esthetics. If you have a choice between 2 races and one has better stats for your role that's good too but really it's whatever. Also if you sub one month, you'll get a potion that lets you change your race/appearance again. Might be able to buy them too.
On scholars, I picked Scholar as my class because I found CNJ boring as fuck, I didn't like the reliance on mana(which might be fixed once you have shroud of saints it's hard to tell) and liked the fact you also get a DPS job on Arcanist if you wanna switch it up. In terms of efficiency I don't know it seems to me the main Scholar heal is absolutely better than anything the WHM does. It's the main spam heal on a 2sec cast and it's basically a 600potency "heal", healing for 300 and shielding for 300. I assume it won't shield on overheal but that's still insanely good in my opinion compared to Cure 1 which is just 400potency and Cure 3 which is 550 potency. On top of that you have the fairy healing which is free additional healing, which beats Regen easily and should offset the Overcure trait for straight up tank healing.
The only big advantage I see to WHM is the cooldowns, the full cure, the faster cast speed for 10secs and the 30% more healing for 15secs, which should make the WHM better at healing spikes and crazy situations, but for most of the content a Scholar is going to be more consistant overall healing. The support fairy if you don't need the healing one looks way way strong too. I don't know to me it looks like Scholar is going to be just great at healing, even though it also means you can't heal properly until 30(you can heal premade groups but it's a bit iffy, ACN mind is even lower than THM I think and you have 0 aoe healing, if you have another ACN or THM helping with spot healing though it's fine) and even then you still probably can't heal all that well until 35(aoe heal) and 40(debuff removal, might or might not be important).
Finally for tanks availability, it's the same, and worse, than every other mmo. Groups are only 4man, meaning you need 1 tank and 1healer per 2 DPS, as opposed to 3 or 4 DPS in a more sensible group size(really wish they didn't do it this way). That means tanks and healer are in extremely high demand, both of them. Depending on the time and content you might be waiting for one or the other in the queue, but it's always going to be the limited and the most you'll have to wait looking for a group as either healer or tank is going to be 2-3mins, vs DPS which have to queue for 20-30mins.
It's like when they shrunk the gator pet for beastlords. I want a Lockjaw pet, damnit! So far, pets in this game look pretty uninteresting.
Pretty gd amazing how balanced that list is!
Since this seems a good place for class questions , now am leaning towards scholar just for the newness of that healer class and or a tank just so can get into groups quicker.
Is it pure theory crafting ATM that seems to have most threads I've researched saying paladins are the desired end all be all ranks , or are warriors a viable tank for most regular 4 man groups all the way through ?
I still think WHM has a significant advantage in raw healing power/throughput--and I also think people put too much faith in the fairies that no one has even seen in action yet--but somehow I managed to talk myself into switching back to SCH as my first class to 50 in spite of that. My biggest reason for switching to WHM was that I didn't want to deal with 30 levels of not-a-healer but then it finally occurred to me open beta took care of 2/3 of that problem for me.
So yeah... -1 WHM and +1 SCH on the poll. :P

I always play tank and I was going to switch it up this time and play a monk but then I remembered how much I hate long queues. Paladin is going to be my first max class but monk will be a close second I think.
Question about the levequests - I heard someone say not to waste them on pve, am I to take that as they're better used on crafting class leveling?
The scholar fairy pet fire off it's abilities on it's own if you want to set it on auto pilot ? (side note do summoners pets work like that too ? )
Also 100% theorycrafting from experience with other mmo's over years and nothing FFXIV related , but it seems from initial class impression in anything 8 man I'd prefer to have a paladin and warrior , and white mage and scholar , filled in then with dps/bard support for other 4. Just seems different enough to have nice way for warrior to jump in over paladin when hits fan , different healing mechanisms with the other two and so on. This far off base or more what they wanted it to be ?
I'd use as many leves as possible on crafting. You get supplied with the materials - and the crystals - for the items you need to produce, if you are picky you can choose leves that reward you with rarer/helpful crafting materials, you get double the xp for the crating attempts plus a juicy xp bonus for hand in.
XP is so easy to get on adventuring classes it's wasted on them.
Leves are somewhat wasted on Gathering classes - certainly Mining and Botany. Although you sometimes get rewarded with worn items with good gathering stats that can't be crafted or gained elsewhere. Fishing used to be more of a pita than Botany or Mining so I would do leves on that, but it's changed and I haven't had a chance to try it out.
All said and done leves are a major source of gil income too. XP rewards are standard by level but item and gil reward can vary a lot. lLeves used to change every 12 hours and be different in each city (you had to get the leves in cities and then go to the areas to do them). Now it seems that Leves change in zones too, so we'll need to see about that.
Two thing as an aside while we are on crafting.
1. Culinarian. If you are doing cooking - and it's very worthwhile - there are a metric shit load of different ingredients for CLN and recipes can take up to eight ingredients. You're going to need a lot of storage space. I had two retainers full of just cooking ingredients.
2. Stats from items/gear/tools/food are MASSIVELY important in crafting. Far more so than in adventuring. True to a lesser extent for gathering. Keeping your stats max'ed as much as possible.
I was going through the foods list and I wish I had taken advantage of some of them more in beta (read: I didn't use them at all). I'll definitely be using them from here on out (shit like +8% attack speed? fuck yes!). I think I'm a lvl 11 CLN, so I'll need to raise that.
I'm still stuck on Regen. The tooltip makes it sound insane.
For the fairy, yeah they get an aoe hot forgot about that. I don't know how the AI will work though. On the carbuncle pets it just uses shit whenever it's up and you can't turn it off which would be fairly annoying on the faeries. You have a command to get your Carbuncle to attack only using its autoattack and then you can manually use the other shit, but that's an attack command I don't know if they'll have one for fairies too, like tell it to chain cast heals and keep the rest off so you manually do it. Guess we'll see.
One thought I had when looking at the two was that maybe they're balanced around on the tank. Paladins supposedly have 3-4 high mitigation skills that reduce incoming damage by a lot. I could see them getting a lot more out of the scholar bubbles due to that. Meanwhile, warriors have 25% more hp and some self healing, so maybe the white mages regen and larger heals would be more of a direct style, giving them a lot more leeway to wait before healing and just letting WAR self-heal + WM regen do it's thing for a bit. So a scholar using bubbles on a paladin might get a lot less bang for their buck on a warrior, and a WM healing a paladin has to do so more frequently or less efficiently than a scholar, but a scholar has to chain heal a warrior to keep up with the lesser mitigation and higher hp pool? Just a thought, since I haven't played either yet.

One thing not mentioned as advantage for Scholar is that if their healing is split between them and pet their heal agro will be much lower than WHM, especially for large group encounters. They might be able to provide more HPS than a WHM due to threat concerns.
Not an expert by any means but just the general feeling I get based off the research and minimal theorycrafting done so far.
How are the healers in terms of damage in solo/questing situation? Can they stand on their own two feet or do they simply outlast the mob by chipping away and healing themselves? I'm really considering switching to a healing class.
They do great. The 1-20 conj was more "slowly chip away at you while I heal myself" and ACN was "tank pet, do whatever I want I am a dps". You will not have any problems doing anything as a healer.
Should you turn in HQ items for the 300% leve bonus or keep for crafting later?
