How much do you think, even though he wrote it, having Orson Scott Card promote this movie will hurt it at the box office?
was surprised not to find a thread on this movie yet...
Teaser trailer is out and full trailer coming in 4 days.

Not at all? The average person doesn't care about writers, or even actors. Sean Penn is batshit insane, and people still go to his movies.
What'll hurt it at the box office is the fact it'll probably suck.

Considering known child rapists have no issue getting movies out and money made, I doubt it'll be much of an issue. Expect to see a few articles detailing his craziness, at best.
Eminent invasion? If I remember correctly we were training him to lead the counter attack. Graffe defeated the invasion. And the fighting of aliens happened as simulated war games during the last few chapters. The whole book was about the rigors of battle school and hardships of training. Hell, it was shown in the later books that the aliens were sorry they attacked us, they didn't realize we were intelligent or some such. I'm going to have re-read those books again.
If I remember correctly they had assumed it was only a matter of time before an invasion took place.
this movie i think is based on ender's game and ender's shadows (or w/e the first book is in the parallel series)
sequel to this movie might be tough sell based on the original series... hehe
since then he has seemed to have been writing alot of the ender universe. i stopped keeping track so i suppose there alot to go on
this should have only been made in the styling of a neongensisanime/kubrick film. live child/adolescent actors are fucking annoying.
I want this to be good, but I'm prepared for suckage. Also, I didn't know Ben Kingsley was in it before that video.
Yes pretty much this. Everybody thought that another invasion was only a matter of time and given their last fight was one almost by luck they did not believe if they waited for another attack that they would survive.
Looks good. Ford makes a great Graff. Kingsley as Rackham is an interesting choice. Sucks that the kids are so much older though, kinda lessens the main impact of the story.
I'd rather have them age the kids and get decent teen-ish actors vs. stay true to the book and have horrible child actors.
I hope this will be decent. Everything looks ok so far, but I've seen too many novel adaptions get raped. As for a sequel... God I hope not, after Ender's Game the books just get too weird.
I already saw the first one. I suppose I will see this as well.
Man, why the immediate backlash to that essay? It is "a great book, period," and the essay certainly isn't calling that into question, although it does question the endings of the 1st and 2nd books. It just brings up some interesting parallels between Ender and Hitler. With the subject matter being what it was (genocide) it isn't too big of a stretch that Card was making a social commentary on Hitler. The essay talks of a lot of smaller parallels between the two that just reinforce the comparison. About the genocide though Ender definitely didn't "save mankind from an intergalactic alien race." He thought he was but he wasn't. Many of the details come from the later books and not just Ender's Game so if you've only read the first you might have missed how he wasn't the savior and actually the aggressor. To summarize the main point though, Ender and Hitler both committed genocide against what they saw as a threat to the good of humanity that wasn't actually a threat. The relevant three paragraphs from the essay:
Anyway, it is a somewhat pointless derail in a thread about the movie. More of a Book House discussion.
I've already read the fucking essay and it's bullshit. There is no parallel because the fucking Jews didn't attack first. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Point is, no one gives a fuck even if he WAS making a fucking social commentary on Hitler. That's not why we read and enjoyed the fucking book and that's not what we took away from it.
Well the history of anti-semitism is largely based on the Jews being viewed as a parasite that bleeds society whether that be economical, political, social, or religious. To Hitler they had been under attack from the Jews for hundreds of years. As far as the rest of Europe and the invasions go that was seen by Hitler and sold to the German people as a preemptive attack and that if they didn't then Germany would be wiped out. Yet more parallels.
Definitely laughing about the butthurt that essay is causing though. Just because you liked the book and Ender as a character and protagonist does not mean that for the essay to be true that you support Nazism and liked Hitler. Pretty sure that's where the anger must be coming from.
There's no anger, just amazement at the fucking stupidity. What part of "no one cares" do you not understand? No one cares AND it's bullshit anyway. Why are you trying to defend it so hard? And spouting world history? You think you're educating anyone? Nigga, please. Next you'll be wanting to teach us basic math.

I don't think that word means what you think it means.
Hitler was angry too, be careful...
You know, now that I have read all that Hitler doesn't seem like such a bad guy. Thank you Orson Scott Card for opening my eyes to the untermensch threat!
Hmmm, don't really like that trailer. I feel like it's portraying events wrong, unless they changed things, which would be worse.
This will be exactly like David Lynch's Dune. Great movie on its own. But fucking awful if you're trying to compare it to the book.
And I mean an absolute fucking rapefest tragedy of a movie compared to the book. But as a movie, pretty fucking good cult sci-fi. Such a contradiction, but I think that's what this is too.
It feels like Ender knows what is going on during the battles in that trailer. That would be a mistake, a bad one if they do that.
oderint dum metuant
I can't wait for this to come out. I don't expect it to be as good as the book but it could be a great sci-fi movie regardless.
Every line of that trailer is terrible. It doesn't help that the book stars a bunch of dumb kids so there's no avoiding that shit but even the grown-ups are phoning it in. If those are the best takes they had, I'm pretty sure this is going to be fucking horrible (despite all the lazerzzz).
Also, I don't remember aliens vs f-16s from the book, but it's also been years and years since I read it.
If they really are changing it such that Ender knows the whole time, it screws up half the book (including, as already mentioned, the freaking title).
Ben Kingsley is so not working for me. Totally should have gone with Temuera Morrison (Jango Fett).
I will admit the Battle Room looks good, though who knows if anyone will want to sit through half an hour of zero gravity laser tag.
Otherwise, we will see. It's the guy who did Wolverine directing a bunch of child actors. My expectations are near zero.
Eh, I liked the trailer. Looking forward to it. I'm sure it'll rape the book but whatever.

perhaps ideally this would be read at a younger age but to not be able to enjoy it at any age makes me think that it has to do with one's ego: where overly scrutinizing/solving the plot goes to invalidate the book or that the popularity/easytoread of it serves to invalidate/demean it.
i mean, there must be a framework for expectations at play here. you see it being heralded as one of the popular sci fi books, you see that it is highly rated, you see that it recommended for teens, you see that it has tons of reviews -- even if you want to like the book going into it and just saw how it is rated on amazon, i don't think you'd be able to hedge your expectations.
not to say that this is applicable to you, but there seems to be so much pretentiousness for things that are popular and just recirculated opinions. just enjoy it. (blahblah different opinions/tastes)
That may be true in some cases, but I wouldn't try to apply that to too many people. It's not like this is the first book I ever read AFTER everyone said it was awesome. Same thing for movies. Sometimes you agree with the masses, sometimes you don't. Malazan series is generally loved here, I find it too dark and depressing to want to bother with. Game of Thrones I really enjoy. LotR books are a snoozefest to me, Dresdin Files are incredibly good. Sometimes is really is just a taste thing.
yupyup. i guess for me it's annoying trying to get ppl take recommendations(moreso reading than anything); you have to sell it and just down play it and your experiences with it. moreover, how you sell/recommend that book will likely determine how they experience that book.
I actually loved Ender's Game until the end. I thought the "twist" was completely stupid and very rushed. Hated it.
The books focused on Bean and the Ender's brother are much better then Ender's game or its direct sequels. Well aside from the reader having to deal with all of the main characters being geniuses just because Card says so. Then again that's a feature of Ender's game as well, so no biggie.
I'd check them out if you enjoyed the first Vardisk.
Spoiled because not sure if this tory can be spoiled or not on a board like this.
The only glaring problem that comes out of all the geniuses running around is how idiotic they are when dealing with Bean's arch-rival at different points in the series.
What really irks me about the later books is that while this singular approach to the children's genius works, he decided to expand it and make characters into some sort of omni geniuses. When you have omni geniuses, everything a character does becomes subject of scrutiny. And when you scrutinize what happens in those books, its way to fucking stupid for the brain to rationally accept what its told to accept. You have to align whats happening in the books to what were told characters are, and this disconnect in the later books becomes painful. You cant just say their geniuses, you have to make them act that way.
wow so i didn't know the controversy about him. all indications point point to him being gay. doesn't seem to carry over to his writing... though, i remember vaguely there being a short injected antigay morale that seemed out of place (think it was one of the later books from the parallel series, near the end).
but the very end its him zooming in, yelling now, fireing some big blue beam gun thing at the planet and it explodeing...so yeah...hope they keep the "its a game" oh no its not! or well...wants left? other than all the QQ aliens QQ after then QQ for 10 more books of terribad QQness
Some of you folks who think Speaker and Xeno are different books than Ender's Game couldn't be further off. You got confused with the setting in Ender's Game with its video games, kids killing each other, and some philosophy and treated it like a Star Wars movie.
All 3 books are about the exact same thing: Ignorance. Ignorance on every level.
The setting in Enders Game is just more fun and attracts a bigger crowd. For years the author bitched no one amongst the masses understood Ender's Game the way he wrote it, they just wanted Sci-Fi and Action. Then he said fuck it, and cashed in with a bunch of retarded Bean books that make 0 sense in connection to the original series. Don't get me wrong, enjoy what you want, and take from it what you enjoy. But if you "don't get" the 2nd and 3rd book, don't try to argue that's because they're not connected and confusing. You just liked the action in the first one, and checked out... it's okay. Here's another Bean book. That'll be 19.99
Case in point, I'll probably enjoy the hell out of World War Z even though that movie isn't even pretending to try to stay close to source material.
So now going back to the post you quoted. Where I said I'm sure it'll rape the hell out of the book but I'm sure I'll still enjoy it...where does any of what I said go against what you're quoting?
Also if my saying "I'm pissed they rapped the biggest villian in the Iron Man universe" is flipping complete shit, I'd hate to see what someone who actually does get angry over something comes off to you as.
Go try to be clever somewhere else, you failed with it here.
I can't believe they made this tool a mod, or janitor, or shit eater, whatever this pitiful excuse for a forum calls it. Actually, now that I think about it, he fits right in with the other mods.
This looks like a re-write akin to I Am Legend, where the entire point is traded away for "action".
Half the book follows this other dude and that's kind of boring but the real main character and the description of the action sequences is pretty good.
Does the fact that I'm trying to do it do it for you?
on steam - notafunhater
That reinforces the tirade against Card that the books are just apologism for nazis/eugenics. What a douche. But this has no impact on whether I will see this in the theater (I won't).
Went back and read this book again over the weekend. They are going to rape the shit out of it with the movie, 100% guaranteed.
Oh, and the jet fighting on earth? I'm like 95% sure that during the first invasion there was a raking or scathing of china. I distinctly remember something about it in the book.
Maybe I read a revised edition?

I really liked Speaker for the Dead. I was doing ok with Xenocide at first until the Aiua shit started (especially the two "new" characters that show up at the end) and Children of the Mind was in the same vein, although I finished both. Just too much metaphysical rambling for me...it seemed to go on and on no matter which character's POV was being presented. I get the feeling that the author likes stroking himself a little, tbh.
Anyway, the movie trailer is just destroying my mental picture of what Ender's Game looked like setting-wise. Just like the new Star Trek reboots...it's another Apple store in space! Fuck. Also not at all comfortable with the theory in this thread that he knows what he's actually doing the whole time..that is THE climax of the book.
Oh, and the word "fart-eater" was used entirely too much.
Not only is Card a major douchebag, Ender's Game is an overrated piece of shit.

“Men and women are made for each other, but their mutual dependence differs in degrees; man is dependent on woman through his desires; woman is dependent on man through her desires and also through her needs; he could do without her better than she can do without him. She cannot fulfill her purpose in life without his aid, without his goodwill, without his respect... Nature herself has decreed that woman, both for herself and her children, should be at the mercy of man's judgment.”
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the one true church and all of Brother Card's views are from the font of knowledge known as the Book of Mormon. Ender's game is a literary masterpiece second only to that work.
has anyone ever boycotted a polanski film because he is a child rapist?

I saw the trailer last night at the theatre, hope it turns out to be a good movie. I thought it was really lame they showed the ending in the trailer though. Wtf?
HP Lovecraft was a huge racist
NASA was founded by a bunch of 'ex' Nazis.
Lewis Carroll was a pedophile.
As Astro mentioned, Roman Polanski plead guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor before fleeing the country, although he was probably right to get out of the country.
So quite frankly, I couldn't give a shit less if Card is a homophobe. His ignorance and prejudices don't take away from his ability to create literature.
Card is absolutely entitled to his opinions. He is entitled to post them on the interwebs. Most importantly others are quite entitled to think he is a an bigoted twat because of them and decide not to buy his stuff.
Decide for yourself and life goes on.
Not sure letting people know about him is an all bad thing.
wow, that's amazing. i gotta finish this book. it's so fucking good.
Color me cautiously optimistic.
call me closedminded....but an action movie with a kid as hero ? no thanks
I don't know about the lead male kid but the girl from True Grit is in it and I thought she was fantastic.
