Which forums would you like to concatenate?
Instead of lots of subsections which splinter the community, I'd recommend limiting the number of forums and instead encourage long time-enduring threads (like we always have). This makes things move a lot more and encourages people to interact with other topics they normally wouldn't. I'm not saying condense it down to 3 forums, but if a forum is only getting a few threads, it probably doesn't need to be a forum and instead could be a couple threads in a more general area.
Additionally, do not hide forums deep within others (subforums).
Which forums would you like to concatenate?
Book and music house can be condensed based on previous usage expectations.
I've always thought Development should be merged into tech.
Business & Finance and Job Listings and Employment Opportunities can easily be merged into Grown Up Stuff
One idea I had was make poll threads in those types of forums and see the results.
The less forums the better. ie: someone who visits the tech forum would have never seen the posts from Merlin about his CS degree, or the posts about certifications. I know some people use those "what new" or "new activity" but I'd bet a majority only click on the forums they are interested in and ignore the rest. If they can't see the threads they don't participate.
Honestly, the product review forum could go also - tech items could go in tech and everything else can hit general or grown up. Product review is really a vestige from when we didn't have a tech forum.
How do you figure we need separate forums for books and music? Posts in those forums are so infrequent they would hardly run over each other. I'm not implying a hidden "fuck you" I'm seriously asking. Is your argument that the subject material is too different as to combine the two or the amount of traffic in those forums once everything settles down will push active threads to the second page? Looking back at the mother site I just don't see how the forums separated justify their existence really. Combing the two would probably create more activity than in the forums separately.
Sometimes less is more.
Edit: It's subject matter, but they're both so low volume that you're probably right.
I think a lot of the forums that have been added in the last couple years could serve as threads in General just as well. Some structural qualities are lost, which I'll admit is unfortunate (i.e.: Travel forum separates places well, whereas a single Travel thread must be searched/parsed), but I think it is worth it because you foster a more interdependent community which generates more activity.
Combine TV + Movie
Let the following emerge as threads in General/Grown Up:
This leaves 4, 3, 4 = 11, with 2 being Rickshaw and Suggestions. 9 is still a lot in my opinion, but that would be a good start.

It's never been siggested to combine TV and movie with anything. The suggestion was music/books.
Entertainment is perfect the way it is imo but I rarely visit Book/Music. I have no problems with merging Dev with Tech and Grown up with Finance. Everything is fine right now TBH though
Honestly, I think mega threads are a much bigger problem than ghost forums. It basically turns what could/should be a normal forum (like politics) into IRC (except for those with the stamina to go through it).
How about we make all the forums we want on this new site and if shit doesn't get traffic for a few months or very little traffic... then we merge with the most relevant forums. I'd rather do this than start out condensed and then try to rally for a change.
As things were on FoH they wouldn't give us the science/tech forum forever and I want my space here.
There is likely a good deal of wisdom in Cathan's suggestion.
I'm fine with the suggestions for combining Finance and Jobs into the Grown-Up forum. Combine Software Development and Tech.
Combining Books and Music makes zero sense to me. Media should be kept separate.
So help me god if you try to merge the tech forum back into a thread or two in general heads will roll.
one of the biggest complaints was not having a tech forum and people are calling for it to be put in general now...
Yeah I never understood why they were different. Product review should stay as it is also
Please leave them as is. Who cares if they don't move as fast as the other ones. Is smashing them together really worth it over having to simple move your mouse pointer a quarter of an inch down to click the 2nd one? We are not talking about finite warehouse space here so when the subject matter is something that is so different like books and music, just let them have their own space.
I actually get to see most of the stuff thats posted because its spread out. If everything is in one thread you have to go back 10 pages to catch up and might miss something
I mean FUCK, your ideas suck. Get rid Grown Up Stuff? Those are the "Grown Up" version of the threads posted in SS. You could have the same thread title in each and they would take on totally different forms. Grown Up stuff (so far) has been troll free, which is kind of nice.
As someone who has been reluctant to post (or catch up and read) some of those mega-threads in the past due to life ebbing and flowing, I would appreciate a bit more granularity in the forums and break up in topics.
I know some folks like minimalism and one stop shopping (or come to the forums every day for their 9 to 5), but not everyone does. I have been reading these forums for over 10 years but I can't read or participate everyday and mega-threads keep people like me at bay.
TLDR, what Cathan said +1.
Tech forum stays. Entertainment forums will never change.
I will consider Business and Finance, Product Reviews and Job Listings.
Product review should stay, there is a lot of shit out there not tech related that people would like to discuss before buying
That shit is not General though, it is specific.
I loved the Grown Up forum on MN. It was growing on me.
I think Travel/B&F/Product/Grown UP are all duplicative in one way or another - but wtf I honestly don't care that much. Again, this is not a thread I would have started.
edit: I will say that it's kind of annoying to constantly have to check for new posts in the current format, but that's my only complaint.
edit: I actually just thought of something that could be a good idea...or a terrible one. But, if the idea is to create more traffic to other areas of the forum, why not just have featured posts for days at a time. For example, the Lyrical business thread going at the top of the Grown Up thread for a few days to drive some traffic to that section. Could even monetize this if you really wanted to, but I don't really like the sound of that.

No more unicorns.
I propose we merge all the forums in to one super forum and call it the 'more gooder' forum.
I could see some of the smaller forums becoming subforums of relevant other forums eventually. Dislike the idea of any current forums becoming threads.
Am I the only one that hates subforums? I tend to not visit them because they are out of the way and easy to forget, more so if they don't have much traffic.
Things like the book forum that don't have much traffic are fine, I like being able to visit the forum less often and catch up, where as screenshots I hit every day. The separation is good for following stuff, some people might feel overwhelmed from the number of forums but I think more would feel overwhelmed by a large number of threads in a forum. Basically if the forum ever pushes a thread to the second page before you read it chances are it is going to get forgotten.
For those of you who are bitching about having to check all these different forums why not do what everyone else does and make a folder in your bookmarks (Mine is still called FoH) and simply bookmark whatever forums you visit the most(Currently mine is MMO,General, Book, Movies,TV, and Other Games) and then just right click, open all like the rest of us?
Keeping it separate is nice for those of us who don't troll these boards 24/7 and thus miss less stuff if you don't check it hourly (which would happen if you combine a bunch of forums and having things go to page 2 faster then it already does)
