    Hearthstone

I couldn't find a thread for this, but if there is one and I missed it, feel free to delete this one.

Anyway, Blizzard are announcing a new game in 50 minutes or so at PAX East, the rumored 'Project Blackstone.' It's apparently not an MMO, expansion or sequel, and word on the street is that data-mining from the site has given the name 'Blizzard Allstars,' which sounds like a MOBA style game. Anyway, stream is here:

    http://www.twitch.tv/pax

    And the website is here:

    http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/blackstone/

It's under the 'sc2' section, which means maybe it's not a cross-IP MOBA type game, but we'll find out soon either way.

    SOMETHING NEW
We've got something new to share, and we're bringing it to PAX East! If you're attending, be sure to arrive at the Naga theater early in order to secure a seat for our presentation. If you're not going to PAX East this year (or you just went a little too crazy the night before), we've got you covered -- the whole thing is being streamed live on the official PAX Twitch channel at 10:00 a.m. EDT Friday, March 22.

I hope whatever it is doesn't require a story or they hired someone new. God damn corruption storylines need to stop popping up in every Blizzard game.

Ugh, I hope it's not another MOBA, I have absolutely no interest in that genre. I'd like to see Blizzard make some "normal" games again like their Lost Viking series, Blackthorne, Rock & Roll Racing, etc.

Unless it's something thats been a complete secret until now, the only thing thats not a sequel, expansion or titan, is blizzard dota. Which i guess is being called blizzard all-stars.

Yeah, I figure that's what it is. But hey, it doesn't hurt to hold onto a tiny faint glimmer of hope that may as well be next to non-existent.

Oh god, FTP collectable card game set in the Warcraft universe. zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Lolled pretty hard at how half-hearted the audience reaction was. You could almost hear it in their clapping "I sat waiting in this dingy theatre for hours to hear this?"

Well, I can't think of many (types of) games they could have announced which would have been received with less enthusiasm.

Wow, this is horrible looking, who is this even directed at? The shout casting portion is killing me, trying to bring excitement to this isn't working and they are trying so hard. This is coming from someone that use to watch M:tG on ESPN2 in the middle of the night and still watches DotA2 and LoL tournaments so I'm use to watching boring shit. How Blizzard has fallen...

    Platforms:

On which platforms will Hearthstone be available?
Hearthstone will initially be available for Windows® and Macintosh®, with a version for iPad coming later.
Kinda surprised they aren't doing a XBLA and PSN version like WotC does with their Magic Duels of the Planeswalkers series.

Actually, this would have been cooler if they integrated it into WoW as well. Set up some card dens in cities, let players wager stuff if they want or have a chance to win ingame rewards, etc. WoW Pokemon worked out well, might as well do this in WoW as well.

15 devs, they said it was going to be small, and they said it was not discussed before, what the fuck did you guys expect? This sounds great for wasting time on my phone. You guys are clearly too old for this, go back to your rocking chair, the kids won't bother you anymore.

I don't think this is end of the world stuff. I play the crap out of Puzzle and Dragons, I'll probably play the crap out of this. Though I question the decision of making this on PCs first rather than just straight to iOS/Android. Yeah, Blizzard is traditionally a PC gaming company, but if you want to print money, mobile is where it's at.

Oy, the behind the scenes thing, "15 hardcore ninjas". Really? They made it sound like a game made by hipsters. I guess this is them trying to become Zynga and branch out on to the mobile market for the super casuals while killing any hope for the WarCraft IP.

    Also, vote for the shaw!

Sadly it doesn't look like it'll be playable on Phones, unless "iPad only" isn't a thing and any iPad game can also be played on an iPhone. The announced Platforms are Windows/Mac and "later" an iPad version. No Android.

And god knows how long "later" means in Blizzard terms.

If it wasn't a FTP game and I could have the whole game for 15/20 dollars it wouldn't be bad, but you know they're going to milk it so hard.

Try 10 dollars being reasonable, since that's what the MtG games on XBL/PSN/Steam cost.

Yeah, I read that. I'm sure it will be expanded upon later down the road. Even so, this sounds like something they could easily add to wow at some point as well, which would be awesome.

    I'm a sucker for card games, so this doesn't look horrible. I think it might actually be kinda fun as a filler for nights when I don't have enough time left to do much else besides a few hands of cards. Used to do t hat with M:tG but don't have anyone near me that plays since moving. ;-;

Actually, since I like Magic: the gathering and those type of games, Hearthstone looks not bad.

But the fuckup part is FTP, I have no interested to play with someone who can spend some $$$ and buy powerful cards...

15 devs isn't really that small. I mean Paradox Development Studios was just 23 people last summer and did stuff like EU3 with just 7 people initially.

These kind of games pay structure usually comes down to buying packs just like you would physical card games, not individual cards. A RMAH for a CCG would probably be cool though for people into pissing away money.

Well I guess they tested super high prices for cosmetics shit in WoW, fee on every item transaction and real money transactions with D3, so I guess what's left is death by a thousand microtransaction tests with this new thing, and then Titan preparing tests will be over.

I agree with this so much.

Make 'packs' be a very rare drop from mobs in the world, like current epic items. Maybe award specific cards as part of achievements within the game.

Sort of like Legends of Norrath did when it first released, before SoE took that out.

Hell, steal even more from the original launch of LoN. Put specific cards on current/old raid targets. Kill Ragnaros? You have a chance of getting Lord Ragnaros the Everburning for your Heartstone game. If you are super lucky, you will get the rare shiny version or whatever - It will keep people busy.

Agreed! That would be a sweet idea. Also, there are a lot of people upset that it's not a bigger "title" but it looks kind of interesting to me, lol. Either way, I'm sure they're saving the 'good' stuff for Blizzcon and all.

As someone who is addicted to mobile games just like this in my spare time - all I can say to this is F A I L. No android support (yet). No mobile devices?! What's the fucking point? Seems idiotic to me to launch this on PC/MAC - its a fucking cell phone game on the computer. Genius.

I suspect it will be integrated into WoW and Diablo 3, just not the way round you are hoping.

99% sure it will have LoNorrath style loot cards you can redeem in whichever game for a shiny armoured mongoose mount or something and they only drop from the $3 a pack cards.

Edit: haha! The post above while I was typing this is it exactly.

Why would I play a TCG game on the computer when I could play so many other great games? Stupid move on their part not going for mobile first.

If it was integrated into World of Warcraft, I could see people playing it while waiting for group/spawns/raids/whatever. But I am not sure what there intent is to try and compete with their physical card game by introducing a seemingly unrelated version.

Didnt the physical card game fade away after a publisher switch or something? Friend of mine was pretty active until then. Iirc it didnt stack up to the big card game IPs anyway (Pokemon, MTG; Yugi). Seems they are re-using at least some artwork from it though, so this is essentially a 15 people project that could probably be done with 5 people in half the time if it wasnt Blizzard.

Nope, it is still out there. They just had a change between the companies that made the card sets.

They probably have to nix trading for money reasons. Why trade other people for what you want when you could pull the random pack slot machine for $5 and have a chance at it!!

It sucks, but I kind of get it. If the core game is strong enough, then you hook people's wallets by randomizing the upgrade path. Sure you could probably get the same cards through grinding some low drop rate, but it's probably not time efficient.

I mean, it's worked for Puzzle and Dragons. I know I'm not the only one on this forum who've tossed them a few bucks for a chance at a better than average card.

This isn't actually that surprising. There are fucking untold piles of cash being made by shitty mobile CCGs all over right now. People have mentioned Rage of Bahamut already, but I don't think anyone has really realized the scope of that thing. Mobbage (who publishes in the US markets) recently bought a 20% stake in CyGames (the jpn devs) for 92 MILLION fucking dollars. It's just unreal the amount of money those types of games are raking in right now, so ActiBlizz wanting in on it smells about right to me.

If you had told me in 2001 that Blizzard would release a CCG right after Diablo III introduced a RMAH I would have laughed off and on for days. JFC this is so goddamn sad.

I was underwhelmed at the launch of this, but I did decide to reserve judgement until playing it.

I have now played it and... its not too shabby. It most certainly is a trading card game and if anything I would have to say it felt like the Everquest card game that you can play from inside EQ and EQ2, but with more class-specific flavor and humor.

For what it is I found it to be quite entertaining and would probably play this from inside WoW while waiting on a LFD/LFR queue rather than do pet battles. I can also see it being an amusing diversion on the ipad while chilling out or waiting around for something. The game play was not nearly as immediately intuitive as the canned demo and shoutcase would have you believe, but at the same time if you have ever played any sort of trading card game before you will pick up on it quickly.

The class specific elements made it have a certain "Mage Wars" feel and I have to wonder if that successful card game from last year wasn't at least a partial influence on the design.

Overall verdict is that while it is certainly underwhelming, it IS fun and does seem to have Blizzard flair to it. I'm looking forward to trying it out more later.

I think apparently everyone keeps missing the point where IT'S NOT BEING RELEASED FOR MOBILE DEVICES. Hence the facepalms/wtfs. IE, people would actually PLAY it and not be disappointed by having another lackluster Blizzard PC entry to compete with the other mediocre/shit releases of late for time spent not playing games that should have been better.

Nah, this is just the usual suspects desperate for Blizzard to fuck up because they quit WoW X years ago and other people haven't/D3 wasn't a straight reskin of D2/and so on.

Nah it's the other issues it has like no mobile platform at launch, no trading, the screenshots look like pure ass. It just doesn't look AMAZING. Will it be good enough? Maybe.

    nah. this is not dependable.

yeah. Alot of the crying is from "gamers" complaining this is not a "game".
But disregarding that, even the more rational people here, are looking at this without that bias. Then looking over at Puzzles and dragons, and other mobile games, and just shaking our heads.
ipad being the only mobile. it just "what"? as others have said, there are many here that would have been all set to jump on a mobile based CCG.

Except for the making a shit ton of profit part.
I'm still curious if the destruction of brand loyalty had any effect on SC2 expac sales.

Oddly, it does seem like its easier to build brand loyalty in gaming, then it is to break it.

Popularity/economic success is not necessarily a reflection of quality. Just because Blizzard is making a profit doesnt mean they arent putting out shitty quality games.

For what its worth I havent bought HotS because I reviewed my "first day buy" policy for blizz after D3.

While I actually enjoy CCGs the UI and visual design for this dont thrill me that much. Anyway it is F2P so I will just try it out (if it hits android mobile before we have holodecks). Also, the name is stupid.

yes, from the gamers end of course, we are pissed.

But I doubt their investors are.
They will only care if the travesty forever broke brand loyalty. But as far as I can tell, D3 travesty had zero effect on SC2 expac. so yeah.

the gamer and poet in us all want the "good" games to sell well.
Path of Exile, Torchlight. Both FAR better games. But while still successes thankfully. neither sold 10million+ copies. And neither have the RHAM making cash every day off of preexisting customers.

D3 was a fucking goldmine. and that is the only lesson anyone in any position of power learned. "fuck that loser"

I'm sure I'll love it, but I'm a huge TCG fan. Spent over $10k on MTGO over the years. Spent 100s of hours on Legends of Norrath a bunch, RoB on mobile etc. It sounds like the main focus will be playing against players. LoN had about 15 scenarios for AI play which were interesting and it seems like could be a potential feature for this game, if not at release. Basically a storyline to follow with interesting encounters that forced you to come up with creative decks to complete, so you couldn't just build one super deck and win them all.

I thought Legends of Norrath was fun and always wondered why Blizzard didn't make a TCG that was accessible IN WoW like LoN. My issue with this game is it doesn't BLOW me away. Shouldn't a Blizzard TCG blow me away? Why is it so low rez? The playing surface on PC is 4:3 to fit an Ipad, so we just waste all that space? Where are the sick animations on your cards? Why are they so boring looking?

This game looks adequate and personally I'd want to be blown away. I'm not surprised they're making this game, I'm surprised it looks mediocre and they didn't do this 5 years ago.

if blizzard didnt suck and this was back during the starcraft days i would have bought it first day solely because back then they put out pure gold, after d3 ill probably never buy a blizzard product without some kinda of demo/beta testing, or if they ever make a gem then itl just be that awesome ill have to grab it.

but even after i beta tested d3 just off gameplay i didnt see the abomination that was coming, so id probably change that to ill never buy a blizzard game again unless they strike a gem, but what really killed D3 for me was no pvp at launch RMAH didnt affect me i never used it, and none of the people i played with did.

Yeah, you can't really count immediate sales only when doing the impact - otherwise you could say that matrix reloaded was a commercial success, even though it's terribleness sank the franchise beyond any hope of recovery.
