Pope Benedict resigns due to "health reasons", will stay on until end of the month at which point a new Vatican Conclave will be called to elect a new pope. Its been over 600 years since a Pope has resigned, and wikipedia says its only happened twice in the history of the church.
Mega scandal inc?
Will the next Pope be black?
Benedict has been a minor disaster for the Catholic Church. Maybe they will go with a developing world Pope this time, but definitely still relatively old so they don't stay around for more than a decade.
An obscure 15th century Irish archbishop published what is supposed to be a prophetic list of the popes, and people who interpreted it (hah!) say that the pope after Benedict will be Saint Peter, who will destroy Rome:
inc End Times
How has he been a disaster? I don't really keep up with pope stuff.
Awesome prophecy. I wonder how the destruction of Rome will figure into the euro financial crisis.
JP II was a Lion compared to Benedict, Benedict could never shake the photos of him in Hitler youth uniforms or his close resemblance to emperor palpatine.
I've read of the saint Malachy predictions for decades now, It would be nice if the list of 111 symbols for the popes didn't find matches in reality.
the apocalypse also means "revelation" btw, there's a considerable amount of thought that the Apocalypse will be fought in every persons mind, as what we classicaly think of evil reveals itself to the public.
I must say as global banking institutions start operating openly as lawless monolithic spectres that have no moral compass, parallels could be drawn.

I never realized how involved Benedict was in the sex scandal cover up until I saw Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God last week on HBO...

All I said was I'd like to know what a little girl told the pope, they are the ones who think it's earth shattering important. You are the one who prescribes that anything unknown and has a question asked about it is a "conspiracy theory" which is funny in of itself. The notion that conspiracies do not and can not exist which is laughable at best.

unlikely, the cardinals doing the voting are the same old fashioned conservatives that voted Ratzinger into the honors. They'll take just another die hard zero progression fundamentalist. Here's hoping they elect a leftist pope next!

The truth is that the child sex scandals are much more discussed and prominent in the US and among non-Catholics than within the church itself. People in the US hear 'pope retiring' and immediately their mind turns to sex scandals, but Catholics and Romans think, "Oh is the next pope going to shit on this doctrine or take us out of that doctrine or promote this bishop to cardinal blah blah blah'.
That's been the problem with the church since around I believe 1150 AD, when pope URBAN II made the college of cardinals he turned it into a good old boys club.
That was also around the time when Malachy made his apolalytic predictions
They also speculate the next Pope could be black. Most catholics in the world are in Africa and the southern hemisphere in general these days...
It almost certainly won't be a white guy... or a woman.
There's plenty of other awful shit to lay at the feet of the current Pope without having to pull the Hitler Youth card.
maybe the mythology is wearing off?
one can hope
Christianity is bleeding subs! It's because they are trying to make changes to appeal to casuals while driving the hardcore Inquisition Zealots away!!!!
Does he have to sign a non compete agreement?
A Pope has not resigned since the great papal schism which was 600 years ago. Kind of puts things in perspective on how big this is for the catholic church. Popes don't resign. I imagine this has more to do with the Vatican being the go to money launderer for the mafia. Or it has to do with the intrigue surrounding the popes butler, this was the guy who stole a bunch of documents from the Vatican. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/...89609T20121007

Maybe Facebook is already all of those things and you just haven't discovered it yet!
Dun dun duuunnnnnnn!!!
the pope life is pretty sweet
I can't wait for season 3 of The Borgias on Showtime. Titties and Popes.Pope John XII (955–963) was accused by his adversaries of adultery and incest. Some sources report that he was rumored to have died 8 days after being stricken by paralysis while in the act of adultery, others that he was killed by the jealous husband while in the act of committing adultery.
Pope Benedict IX (1044, again in 1045 and finally 1047–1048). He was accused by Bishop Benno of Piacenza of "many vile adulteries." Pope Victor III referred in his third book of Dialogues to "his rapes... and other unspeakable acts." His life prompted St. Peter Damian to write an extended treatise against sex in general, and homosexuality in particular. In his Liber Gomorrhianus, Damian accused Benedict IX of routine sodomy and bestiality and sponsoring orgies. In May 1045, Benedict IX resigned his office to pursue marriage.
Pope Paul II (1464–1471) is popularly alleged to have died due to indigestion arising from eating melon in excess, though a rumour was spread by the pontiff's detractors that he died while engaging in sodomy.
Pope Sixtus IV (1471–1484) was alleged to have awarded gifts and benefices to court favourites in return for sexual favours. Giovanni Sclafenato was created a cardinal by Sixtus IV for "ingenuousness, loyalty,...and his other gifts of soul and body", according to the papal epitaph on his tomb.
Pope Alexander VI (January 1, 1431 – August 18, 1503), born Rodrigo Borja (Italian: Rodrigo Borgia), Pope from 1492 to 1503), is the most controversial of the Popes of the Renaissance, whose surname became a byword for low standards in the papacy of that era.
A career highlight was the 1501 “Joust of the Whores,” when 50 dancers were invited to slowly strip around the pope’s table. Alexander and his family gleefully threw chestnuts on the floor, forcing the women to grovel around their feet like swine; they then offered prizes of fine clothes and jewelry for the man who could fornicate with the most women. Alexander’s other hobbies included watching horses copulate, which would make him “laugh fit to bust.” After his death — quite possibly poisoned by his pathological son, Cesar Borgia — this pope’s body was expelled from the basilica of Saint Peter as too evil to be buried in sacred soil.
that's not debatable, the church is the worlds largest landholder, It doesn't pay taxes on it's land. it is the largest reservoir of gold.
There is this notion that the church is this weak entity it's not. 100 years ago it was a common perception that the church was the worlds most powerful organization (temporal power) this viewpoint has kinda gone away but the reality of it hasn't
Whether or not you believe in a religion you still have to study it to understand it, and because religions are massively powerful entities that control not only wealth but major influence on the minds of billions of people It is kinda unavoidable that to understand the world you have to understand something like the history of Catholicism, or Islam or bhuddism ect.

LoL i love the 20 hipsters that post here acting like the Catholic church has no power and are irrelevant. Hate to break it to you hipsters but you're the minority bros.
MSNBC's Vatican Analyst (yeah, they actually have one) was saying that the rest of the world doesn't take the U.S. Catholic Church seriously at all... they just like our money.
This was in the context of whether or not the next Pope could be from the U.S.
The bias has to do with the reformation, when a lot of people started leaving the church during the reformation they became protestants, and ultimately the vast majority of settlers in america where protestants. Martin Luthers 95 thesis was in 1522 right after america was discovered.
until Vatican II remember which happened in the 1960's Protestants and Jews where mortal enemies of the catholic church.
there where no american born people made saints before vatican II as well, that's when the church really radically reorganized itself, in the 20th century vatican II

I wouldn't be suprised if they picked a pope from South America, Central America or perhaps even Africa. But I'm not catholic just seems like that those are either already catholic areas or areas they could expand into more.
I just wanted my 666th post to be in this thread.
The worst part about this is that now you can forget news sites for the next 48 hours because this rather irrelevant issue is gonna get all the cover. Did it push Dorner from page 1?
Yeah, they've barely mentioned Dorner since about 6 this morning.
this won't last 48 hours because the State of the Union is tomorrow
And there will likely be no new news on this until the end of the month when the College of Cardinals is assembled to elect a new pope anyways.

That's NCAA tournament time. Wonder which of these I will care more about?
Once he hangs it up, they should eat him. Emissary of God, Body of Christ and all that jazz..
Why did he resign? For you HBO subscribers you can see why here -> http://www.hbo.com/#/documentaries/mea-maxima-culpa
Statistic from show: "Only 50% of Catholic Priests are celibate."

Benedict gets some cool points for being in Hitleryugend, but Jan Pawel II was a way better pope. He understood the importance of spreading faith to the young people by participating in activities they typically enjoy, such as sports, dancing and music.
He probably got tired of shitting in the woods.
This just in!
The Republican Party demands no new pope until they get answers on Benghazi.
I'd have quit too if my boss never once showed up for work.
At least, like a true Catholic, he pulled out early.
Obama should run for pope.
1.2 billion eh. Are those uniques?
The numbers aren't that important because there's no sub cost.
They didn't have donation baskets in any of the churches you may have visited in your life?
In the middle ages they took a 10% tithe but it's FTP now, of course you have to pay for every service you want (wedding, baptism ect ect)
I think that, according to the Catholic faith, the only acceptable method of birth control is conception.
No, you are allowed to practice not having sex when you think the wife is ovulating.
New Pope will be Anti-Pope.
So I guess this happened yesterday after the pope's announcement. St. Peters Basilica for anyone wondering.
That's why the old Pope has to have his head chopped off by the new Pope.
THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE.
are these really the candidates for next El Papa? asian dude looks pretty awesome and happy
If Benedict died from AIDS he caught when sodomizing a small African boy would the public ever find out about it?
I don't like Pope Palpatine, but this is just brutal:
http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news...-1226577099316A POLISH cardinal caused a stir in the Vatican yesterday with remarks in a radio interview that appeared to criticise Pope Benedict XVI's decision to resign.
Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz of Cracow, secretary to the late Pope John Paul II, was quoted as saying that Benedict's predecessor had decided to remain Pope while dying an agonising death from Parkinson's because "you don't get down from the Cross".
Leave it to the church to think keeping people with mental deficiencies in charge is a good thing.
Mormons would never tolerate a cardinal type talking shit about the man in charge.
Mormons > cathylicks
Isn't there some prophecy that says that this next pope will be Italian / Roman and will be the last one before Armageddon?
i think that no black, asian or young (under 65) will be the new pope.
my bet goes to the brazilian cardinal
A war is coming, I've seen it in my dreams. Fires sweeping over the Earth, bodies in the streets, cities turned to dust... retaliation.
Hollywood is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until everything you love is dead.
South America and Africa would be my guess.
What's the over/under on the next pope being old and white?
I guess the question is, in what part of the world are the Cardinals the least rapey?
It aint rape. It's Jesus and the Two Disciples spreading the Holy Ghost through sulfurous pits of Hell.
Do retired popes have to live out their remaining days with the dosh khaleen in Vaes Dothrak?
"The good thing about the pope dying is that for a few weeks there isn't anyone on earth that claims to be infallible." Summarizing Christopher Hitchens Quote
That being said, I vote for the Asian looking one. Top row, second one from right on spronks post.
The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.
