I approve of that properly done thread-starter.
Doctor Who thread, because threads are cool...
I approve of that properly done thread-starter.
I'll say it. Matt Smith is awful. Excuse me- bloody awful. And his previous companion Karen Gillan, while super hot, was an annoying and shallow character. Rory surprisingly ended up with more depth than any of them. Have not seen the current season.
I tried to watch Dr. Who and I just couldn't get into it. Makes me sad because I should really like it in theory.
When I started to get into it I started from 2005 and after the first season I was like WTF is shit shit? If you can get past the first season or just skip it entirely, then it will be worth the watch.
Matt Smith is Brilliant. Whatever else you can say the whole 3 season arc featuring Rory, Amy and River was also well done.
I like Matt Smith. Not as much as Tennant of course, but I like him. I'm also very much ready for him to die. It's time for a new doctor. I'm kinda hoping they pull what they did between season 1 and 2... Smith gets new companion, dies, becomes new doctor, who develops a romance with companion (who is already better than horse-mouth).
Fair enough. I think what I didn't like about Matt Smith the most was his age and mannerisms. To me, he could never pull off the "I have a 1000 yo soul who has seen all of space and time" look in his eyes and face and expressions. Also I felt let down a lot by the writing.
There were awesome moments like the Pandorica which was like the coolest thing ever for about 10 minutes, but he just kinda deus ex machina'd his way out of it. The Crack in the Wall also felt anti-climatic, esp after awesome episodes like The Library set the stage as early as the previous doctor. I hope that the series does get back on track though. Glad some of you still enjoy it
I like Matt Smith. I like Doctor who in general.
I'm with Asmadai. When Tennant was cast, I threw my hands up in the air and swore I'd never watch again. So after he became my favorite, I decided to get Smith a chance despite being baffled by his casting. Now Smith may be my favorite but he doesn't get the writing that Tennant or even Baker got, and the writing goes a LONG WAY.
Which is ironic considering it's one of the best TV writers in the world. I guess he was just better off doing 1-2 eps a year for Davies.

I'm very worried by how pleased with themselves the new companion and Moffat sound about her "backstory" after we've already seen her die onscreen during the previous series. The last couple of seasons have seen a marked downturn in the quality of the writing with it being turned into more of a scifi farce than any kind of drama. You have to go as far back as something like the Van Gogh episode to find a really good one.
As for Smith, I'm completely with Jait on this one, he is a decent Doctor being let down by shitty writing. I never expected to like Tennant and took a couple of years to even try after thinking Ecclestone was awesome but he did well in his own way and it was quite sad by the time it ended.
As for time to change the Doctor, I like the way they change the dynamic by either swapping the Doctor or the companions so I can live with Smith for a while yet so long as Oswin is interesting.
Starting the campaign now, next Doctor to be Idris Elba or Ruth Wilson. Preferably with the loser as the companion I have a funny feeling though that they will cite cutbacks etc and once Smith has had enough they will put Dr Who back into storage again for a while.
Matt Smith's doctor is just a badass.. He might not get the 'old soul' vibe, but he definitely gets the 'You should be afraid of me' vibe and speeches. The Atraxi speech/introduction of him is still one of my favorite doctor who moments so far. I still get a little grin every time I watch that scene. Shit.. http://youtu.be/tCnXBD8TKJg all of these scenes, basically. *SPOILERS* if you haven't watched the last few seasons, there's a few spoilers there.
Then, he goes from moments like that to little kid type glee, which are hilarious. He's like a space gandalf/dumbledore, which is why I love the Doctor, and Matt Smith does the two sides of him like that well.
They've recruited a huge name for the Christmas special, he's only providing a voice but wow!
Spoilers don't seem to be working so here's a link for the curious http://www.doctorwhonews.net/2012/12...812121450.html

"Basically....run." Shit still gives me chills. Haha.
They set us up with that ep. The ending basically took a fresh faced kid we all were wary of and somehow trumped Tennant's first ep "No second chance..." speech by making it a thousand times better. It also had the feeling of being done with a great deal of respect to all the previous Doctors (including 8). For me, that set a good tone from the start.
Same day broadcast for the US types!
Gotta love the Game of Thrones reference. Winter is coming!
I thought I heard Gandalf in that trailer. Nice!
I ADORE the Doctor, amd am a complete and unabashed Whovian. When the Xmas special airs, I shall be here dissecting and praising it like the total screaming fangirl I am .

Only click the following if you want to be spoiled for part of the Christmas Special...
Personally I think it's hella nice indeed.
I feel like Matt Smith & RTD ruined so many good Who villains for the audience. Angels imo were ruined. Used entirely too much. And the Daleks. We've seen them what, twice per season with Smith/RTD? They used to be such a feared race. Remember The Stolen Earth when the second they heard the "EXTERMINATE" the Tennant, Torchwood, and Unit all trembled in fear? Now they are just a joke. And River too. Fuck I would rape Alex Kingston's anus so hard, but she was so much better when she only appeared once or twice to drop a random Doctor & River history nugget.
Stop going Hollywood on us and reusing old content. It's called the CREATIVE process for a reason. Get creative!
Moffat agreed that the Daleks have become a running joke and overused, that is why the tone changed with Asylum. He is rebooting the Daleks. They will be used less frequently and be more of a menacing villan lurking in the background and only coming out very little. Angels have run their course until another blink type episode comes.
Anyone wondering when Jenny will make an appearance. Moffat bitched to RTD to keep her alive because he wanted to explore the character. Technically 3 seasons since and no sign/mention of her.
I definitely want to know what became of Jenny. Ten took her creation quite seriously, and when he told Donna that he had already done the family/fatherhood thing, it felt (to me anyway) that it was confessed with regret. I can't imagine that Doctor just happily marrying River.
And speaking of River; to refresh my memory I have been rewatching the Matt Smith years, and even though I was heartbroken to see Amy & Rory go, I felt cheated by the build up only to have that trauma and them just be happily safe somewhere else. I wanted Moffatt to have the balls to kill them, like they did way back when the killed Adric.
Anyway, I am kind of getting tired of the whole "create a paradox and destroy all of time and space" thing that happens in evey single season with 11. I'm no longer scared or concerned for any of the characters, and I feel like it is becoming more geared for the children who have to have everything back to normal at the end of an episode. That makes me sad.

What happened to Jenny is she married David Tennant. That's probably why she hasn't come back ;P
yeah my dad bailed on who because its become too goofy and for kids. last year they had like a boogyman in the closet kiddie episode, a baby vs cyberman episode and then a witch and the wardrobe kids episode. all were pretty facepalmy. they need to say fuck you to BBC America and go darker. not saying they need to go too dark. just keep more in line with ecclestone and tennant's adventures. the way things are going, this doctor will probably never die otherwise. im getting a bit tired of him . time for a new guy.
Any old school/hardcore Dr. Who fans want to confirm this.. I was reading a wiki site about the Doctor that said he has exactly 13 regeneration's before he can't do it again?
If so, seems like a corner they will have to write themselves out of if the show keeps being successful..
From what I remember having watched it as a kid it seems like The Master was a TimeLord that refused to accept his final regeneration... or maybe just a regeneration in general. I also seem to remember they've asked Doctor Who to basically become King of the TimeLords on multiple occassions and he's always like, "Nah. Busy. Thanks tho. Bye!"
Between these 2 things and the fact that it's Doctor Who and wouldn't be at all weird to just -ignore- the "x regenerations before you're gone" stipulation of previous incarnations I don't think they'd have to be all that creative with the writing.
Watched the Library two-parter while at work yesterday. That storyline was played so well with Kingston/Tennant. I feel like the emotion has left it with Smith. I wish we could hear more about their marriage etc.. hopefully they don't ruin that potentially huge storyline.
Touche' on the Georgia Moffet/David Tennant answer, but thats a non issue
As for Regenerations, as said above it was mentioned a few times, as in deadly assassin. I was under the impression that the Time Lords needed the master so they gave him a regeneration or two to keep him alive. From then on he stole regenerations from other time lords (possibly mentioned during John Sims incarnation, thought i heard it then). As for 13, that is the limit set by the time lords, but it can be changed. Usually #12 is the evil incarnation (Valyard). I believe RTD didnt explicitly adhere to that but he threw the limit out the window with some sort of Time Lord Logic or some shit. I heard something about the time lords giving the Master and Doctor (or all timelords) unlimited Regenerations sometimetime during the time war. i dont know if that is RTD/Moffat/Writing Team that said that or fanfic. i also recall something that might have have negated all timelords, something about the doctor saying that the time war was so horrible that timelord were commiting suicide just to use up thier regenerations ( i think something was said by the time lord council in The End Of Time)
just watched the first few minutes of End of Time pt2, Not sure if they are referencing regenerations or that time is looping infinitely causing infinite resurrections.
It doesn't matter how many regens there are...if they run out of official regens, they will come up with some way to give him more.
The end of Doctor regenerations is when the ratings tank and the show gets canceled ;P
Wibbly Wobbly Time Wimey. Further explanation is unnecessary.
Well, and though it's technically not canon I don't believe, another side thing mentioned about the number of regenerations was mentioned in this one episode of The Sarah Jane Spinoff (the one where they all were led to believe the 11th Doctor was dead) Later in the episode, he shows up and has a little side dialogue with one of the children characters, and I remember him saying something along the lines that he can regenerate as many times as he wants to.
Edlt: Found it, the 11th claimed he could regenerate 507 times specifically. He could have been rambling, sure, but it still needs mentioning.
The notion of there being 13 regenerations was only mentioned once in this new series, but the idea of 13 regenerations goes back way before that, correct? That was upheld during the Baker era too, iirc.

Mentioned it in my last post. It only comes from one episode in Who: The Deadly Assassin. Which was a Baker ep. Never been mentioned since except the 507 times which Moffat added to show how ridiculous he thinks this whole argument is. To put it another way.... there are more episodes which CONTRADICT the 13 regens than the one that upheld it. And if you take it a certain way in the episode with Morbius it illustrates that the Doctor had more lives before the first Doctor, or rather the 1st as we knew him wasn't the 1st Doctor but the 5th or 6th. Can't remember the name of the ep, but it's when some dead Time Lord wants the 4th Doctor's body and delves into his past incarnations and it goes 5-6 pictures past the 1st.
The Master claiming he was out of regenerations backs it up too. But seriously, it's just up to the writer how they want to handle it as we move into the 12th and 13th Doctors. FFS You could consider Tennant's run as two regenerations too...so this guy might be 12.
Christmas Episode was great but...
Couldn't make sense of it at all. How can someone die twice in two different times, and still be alive in another time?
Winter is coming? Interesting choice of words..
Oswin is the Doctor's Daughter. Or Mother. Hence the dying and redying.
I liked the new intro; the flash of Matt's face during, haha very retro.
Welcome back, Moffat.
Loved the intro, caught at least 3-4 homages. Loved the ep. Hated that we have to wait as it's obviously the big plotline for next year or two along with the Trenzalore/Fall of the Eleventh.
oz the great and powerful? some l frank baum references?
eyes front soldier?
Oswin falling slowly down like riversong and the chick from the titanic episode?
isnt the doctor married?
that was a really odd episode. is the upcoming season the 50th anniversary season where they throw in all classic who shit? oh well. even though it had kids in this one at least they had a little bit of a body count. it started to get a dumb with the social commentary.
the only non story nitpick i had was the lizard chick didnt put on the green eye makeup before they applied her mask. even batman and green arrow do that shit.

I second the thought that Clara/Oswin (I wonder if she goes by different names in different times, and if those might reflect different personalities, or markers the Doctor must later follow) being his daughter from the earlier episode, only because of the emphasis on the running part. We didn't see any sign of regeneration, but then, Jenny didn't sparkle and regen--notably in the same form-- until some time later.
When they released the shot of the new TARDIS interior, I hated it. But seen in action, I like it. I note that he says he's been living in the clouds for a while now (metaphor for past beliefs and behaviours?) but that he hasn't repaired the TARDIS exterior from the damage in the Ponds' farewell. River was going to stay with him for a while, but has obviously left him to sulk on his own, and he has gone to hide with people he can bully into not forcing him back into the world.
I *LOVE* the new opening credits--very modern and paying homage to what has come before to honour the 50th. I think it's going to be a great year, and a very painful wait until April!! Can't wait for Gaiman's re-imagined Cybermen either!
They wont be related. It's a family show :P No making out with your dad then checking out his ass.
Or rather, I'd be incredibly surprised.
I think she's something new. Or River
i liked the new intro, though i really liked the theme from the Pond years. that lightning striking the tardis while synching up with the crescendo of the music pumps me up. i didnt like the inside of the tardis that much. didnt hate it. just was a little disappointed they are turning the tardis control panel into more of a space ship and not a silly array of household items.
Yea, I liked everything about the new TARDIS interior, except that it's a bit more modern/fancy for the way the Doctor (especially the current one) has operated. He'll no longer get to call things like 'the wibbly lever!'.
I can't imagine Oswald is his daughter, but something interesting along those lines possibly. A partial timelord of some kind, perhaps.. who has a way to regenerate in the same form OR be reborn/transfer to a new body.. since one would think her actual body got buried in that grave, so it'd be hard to get out even if she regenerated. No, I think it'll be something along the lines of the same person somehow existing in multiple timelines, like a fractured being.
Also, does the Doctor getting fixated on the 'Great Intelligence' ring a bell to anyone else? I don't remember something like that being mentioned to the audience before, but maybe I've missed it.
They are gonna go all out for the 50th and I'll be giggling like a school girl the whole ride.
I wasn't a fan of the new Tardis console but its obvious they did it as a throwback to the original. The console looked exactly the same (cept with a few upgrades pieces) but its a little too futuristic for me. It's "ancient technology" after all.
Pretty shit show, but JLC is cute as hell.
If by shit you mean Awesome, then yes.
Sir, emergency! i think i've been run over by a cab!
Potato man had me laughin pretty good.
Ok that was awesome... next season is going to be crazy I think, can't wait. >.<
Aaaah, Moffat and his broadcast shenanigans.
"Ok, let's air the first 5 episodes of season 7 in Fall 2012. Then we'll have the Christmas special, and the remaining episodes of the season will go in Spring 2013."
Fuck you Moffat, fuck you!
Well whatever it is, I'm looking forward to it(Dr Who seasons are always confusing to me >.<)
so wait. they are only going to have 6 episodes again in 2013?
There should be 6 episodes in the spring and another 6 in the autumn. They split the seasons.
I thought we are only half way through the current season?
Oswin is about as hot as the blue ghost chick on last seasons pirate ship
She's a Stage 9 Time Clinger.
I might of missed it... Did they ever say who the "friend of mine" was that saved Straxx's life? I assumed River.
I assumed it was the lizzy chick. She rezzed oswin so I figured that was confirmation
Man.. I had almost forgotten how fucking hilarious Straxx was until people started quoting him.
When he returns from getting the worm the first time.. oh god. We need more Straxx in the rest of the season. Maybe even a spinoff.. though I think they've already set a record for spinoffs from one show.
I like all 3 of the doctor's "Friends". Hope they show up more than once or twice a season.
I think it's been over a hundred years, thought I read 200 somewhere else. Although with Jenny, unless she has some trick I don't know how she avoided aging. If she's just a Human than the Doctor was probably only there a year
Also, Enzie, if you missed it, there's a prequel. It's pretty funny, mostly with Strax trying to declare war upon the Moon. It's always sitting there, just watching and waiting....
Okay so further guesses on Clara...Susan Foreman who will eventually be introduced to the 1st Doctor who she'll say is "As old as my grandfather!" thus explaining the relationship. Or maybe.... far fetched....but possibly...she is the 12th Doctor? Stuck in a time loop or something?
The 12th Doctor? Really, Jait? I expected better from you. :P
the doctor said in that episode that hes a thousand years old. so hes been soloing for some time.
THE DOCTOR GROWS BOOBIES?!?!
That makes Tom Baker marrying the she-doctor kind of... Well. I'm. I'm not sure what to feel.
That's hot? I think?
Vastra and Jenny were already a great pair of characters but adding Straxx into the mix elevates the set of them to full fledged ensemble. I know its been said that they are too busy to take on a full Victorian-aged Who spinoff with these three but damn they are pretty awesome characters.
If someone had told me that a Sontaran and a Silurian would be awesome 'companions' in Dr Who 7 years ago I'd have thought them bonkers.
Yeah, I'm grasping at straws. I can't believe she's the "embodiment" of the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who. She's either a trap, or something REALLY REALLY important. I totally think they could make her Susan in the way I explained, it would bring it full circle in a great way.
And Qhue, I said the same thing to someone the other day. If you had told me Doctor Who was coming back 10 years ago I'd have trouble believe that...but a Silurian and a fucking Sontaran would be the companions? And comic relief??? I'd have said Doctor Who had jumped the Shark. Instead...I WANT MORE.
Did anyone else notice Clara's ring kept switching back and forth from left middle to right middle fingers? No clue if it's just a continuity error or supposed to be a subtle hint for something further down the line.
Not sure if its been posted or if everyone knows, but this Sunday on BBC America they are starting a documentary series about the Doctors starting with the First Doctor
Each Doctor is going to get a documentary and a reairing of a classic ep.
The Aztec's is going to be the 1st Doctor's ep.
