    Expert mode is no joke.

With gear from everything except for the Frost Event, Plantera is wrecking me in both my Magic and Melee (Vamp Knives/Scourge) sets. Going to farm a minion set and try that next.

Good times on the server. Thanks Hachima for hosting. Currently working on gearing up to beat skeletron, he is pretty crazy on expert. If anyone wants to join in the fun there are some chests in the NPC building near spawn with all kinds of goodies in them, help yourselves!

Im thinking we could start another map once we swiss cheese the one were on right now? Cuz its not looking bad but its not something we really worked hard on either. Some people have just noticed we have a server going on. Im just not so sure how it goes for a terraria server thats been on for a while for newish people that arrive.

We haven't unlocked hard mode yet and there is plenty of extra stuff in chests at the start area you can grab.
I put up 2 new servers for anyone interested and if there are any requests for world setups let me know.

terraria.hachima.com:7777 - Current progression server. Large - Expert
terraria.hachima.com:7778 - Small - Normal (easier but loot isn't as good either)
    terraria.hachima.com:7779 - Small - Expert.

Right as we progress we could leave our lower tiered stuff in chests at entrance so people getting on fresh can get up to speed a bit, we still havent done much progress. Ill put a crimsonite armor set there, that you get from farming the first 2 bosses. New 7 days to die patch is here so im holding off terraria till i notice someone is playing. Ill go in once every hour or so to check if someone is on.

Expert mode definitely no joke. Id say the early game is even really boring with it.

Careful on a group server. its really tempting to be a good guy and leave low tier armors you don't need etc for people just hopping on, but that also takes away a big part of the game. And its really hard as a new player to refrain when that item is right there in front of them. esp if they don't even know what is "level" appropriate.

Even though it would just be for RR, a password is needed. I've read quite a few things about people having servers up and some guys just coming in and messing shit up.

I don't understand why they haven't added an option for server-side stored characters.

Trying to farm a Daedalus Stormbow (25% drop from HALLOWED Mimics) as it should make killing Plantera significantly easier. (Current method involves people 'cheesing' the fight with a teleport pad arena).

Mimics are rare enough as it is. Hallowed Mimics are stupidly rare.

Have found two and got the hook each time.

I mean characters locked to a server, so people can't bring outside characters in.

I decided to join you all. Haven't played in forever so I just brought in my old single player character with Chlorophyte armor, Excaliber, Drax, and some wings. Hopefully it's decent enough to get me caught up.

I bought the game and made a new guy a couple days ago. Didn't unlock hardmode or anything yet, just kinda doing stuff I had skipped a couple years ago or whenever it was.

Are you guys doing item drop or just coin? I'd hate to roll in playing easier than everyone, but, fuck item drop, I'm too old and washed up to be a video game badass anymore.

Expert is probably way too hard to be doing anything but coin drop. Even ridiculously overgeared I get killed every few minutes.

wife and i playing item drop, medium core. we've killed the eye and the slime king. the VERY start was rough, trying to push distance to explore and lay rail and the goblin army was brutal. i know you can't really 'fail' the goblin army but spawning naked with those fuckers everywhere with dinky weapons was rough. inevitably we backed into a hole in the ground and killed them. our gear got hopelessly mixed (she was doing space gun and crimtane sword, i was doing the blood cloud wand and the gold+ruby wand.

we're about to try the brain of cthulu due to a lava moving mishap destring all my non rare gear (and my gold pick) so it's time to move on the crimtane pick. good expansion. royal jel is sweet. yoyo is best plant picking thing ever.

I imagine we'll need at least 4-5 people on at the same time for any of these hardmode bosses. I'm not even sure how many for Plantera and the ones after it.

Took a break from doing 'Expert' to go back and play some of the content that is out of my reach.

Martian Madness is lots of fun - Though it may be bugged right now? When I did it, the UFO Boss spawned seven times in one invasion, so I ended up with every item it drops. The UFO Mount is awesome - 41mph Speed, Infinite Flying. Only downside is that it is 3-Wide, so it is not that useful underground.

I absolutely cannot imagine how people can do the Celestial Pillars/Final Boss fights in Expert, without major cheese. Even on Hardmode, with good gear, there were a few times I died.

I'm loving expert mode. The new drops are cool as hell. The bee mount was great, the eye shield with the dash was amazing, i still use it for the juke potential. Me and a buddy are playing midcore and recently flipped hardmode. Shit is badass. Definitely have to play smart though, and roll all warding on your accessories lol. One major bonus of expert was an extra accessory slot from killing wall.

I think you can craft a hallowed key from souls of light and put it in an empty chest and turn it into a mimic. We did it with souls of dark.

Haw, expert mode is pretty damn rough. Devourer of Worlds has the little projectiles that hit for 100 damage, and my screen looks like Ikaruga while fighting it. Eyeball wasn't bad, but Skeletron takes like... no damage from my attacks with meteor gun and meteor armor, so definitely need to try other methods than my normal ones. I steamrolled a bloodmoon and goblin invasion with like... no risk whatsoever though. The health regen stuff is definitely annoying. The dash shield from eyeball is pretty awesome to use with the sprint shoes, as it instantly puts you at max speed.

I have no idea how people could 'progress' through Expert from scratch. Some of the fights are absolutely brutal without using major cheese (Spike/Honey Pit arena, Teleporter arena, etc).

If you are not starting over from scratch, farm the Pillar event until you can make a Solar Eruption (Easily the most OP weapon in the game) and maybe the Martian Madness event until you get a UFO Key (Mount - Unlimited flight, dismounts in water). Then go into Expert mode. You will not pull your hair out at least.

I'm doing Expert now, made a lot of progress since I posted. Eye/Worm/Skeletron down, going to farm up the mats to summon the bee, and I've already got a pretty long bridge for Wall of Flesh.

Using campfire cheese wasn't necessary in standard, but it pretty much definitely is for Expert if you aren't using hardmode gear vs. normal expert bosses. You really need to fight the worm underground, in a hallway, or you will get swarmed with the spit bullshit. Loading up on regen/ironskin pots, campfires spaced so you are always under the effect, and eating a marshmallow/bowl of soup helps a lot. I had to use the minishark for Skeletron, but primarily it was meleeing the shit out of his hands using the firey greatsword and then shooting at his hands/head when spinning. I highly recommend fighting Skeletron with the occasional row of blocks overhead, or you will be eating the skulls it starts spitting out constantly once you kill a hand for the entire fight, and they hurt. I had 31 defense(before pots) and the worm scarf when I fought him. 17% less damage taken is basically almost required since shit hits really hard and armor doesn't do nearly the reduction it did in standard.

It's doable, but you really need to farm the shit out of stuff. And getting lucky and having the goblin tinker guy spawn in the hive (apparently something he can do now) really helps, as I had all the mats for a few combined items, including the double jump flight boots.

its not even cheese in expert. you need campfires. HP regen is basically nonexistant without them. its outright a mechanic of expert mode.
Also "well fed", again required. HP regen is outright quartered without it.

Fuck skeletron , i kept getting knocked into his spinning head of death. Took damn near 10 tries before i finally beat him. Starting to not like expert mode , these expert items arent all that great. My bitch ass is going to normal for wall , but that extra accesory slot is sounding very nice.

Yeah, I swung at the Wall last night with a bridge about 1/5th the length of hell. Wasn't nearly enough haha, but I did pick up an autofire bow with 3x the damage of minishark, so I'm gonna give that a go (I doubt it pierces, though I haven't tried it on anything important yet) and probably build a bridge across 75% of the hell. What really fucked up my attempt is -right- when I engaged, a medusa mob dropped behind me and stoned me into losing 2/3 of my health. I had heart lamps and campfires all over the place, so when I got out I was able to pot/regen back a bit and not instawipe, but it really f'd up my chances. The additional armor on these mobs makes traditional tactics kind of not as useful. Meteor gun does dick all to the Wall, and the minishark only sort of does less crappily because of the pure volume of fire. I think with the length of my bridge, I had it right around half health, so tripling the size should give me plenty of room when it starts speeding up.

I take it back: the bow pierces. Though it definitely has more erratic firing patterns than the minishark. You sort of just spray arrows in an arc in front of you. Might not help!

So yeah, WoF is not bad at all if you use the helwing bow vs. the minishark. I had him to sub 50% (didn't even use an archery potion, because I'm dumb and never use bows so forgot about it) by 1/4th across my bridge (it's only half the underworld long) and I was still at mostly full health. Ended by about 2/3 through, over 50% health and I didn't pot once. Definitely the way to deal with the Wall in expert.

Me and a buddy duo'd expert mode midcore and killed moon lord last night. So far this patch has been amazeballs. We still need to do martian madness but other than that we have cleared just about everything. A few things.

You need to be careful in everything. (especially as midcore lol)

Campfires as cheese? What do you mean? We had spaced campfires, heart lamps and honey puddles in our basic arena. For moonlord we had the honey in floating bubbles and heart statues wired up to 1 second timers. (dont forget the placeable buffs like the grindstone, crystal ball, ammo box etc)

Speaking of arenas you should have several. We had one for events, one in the jungle for bee/plantera, a corrupt/crimson, a beach one for fishron, one for the hardmode world bosses, and one for the moonlord.

Buffs are huge. You need farms. We had potted plants for all the basic herbs and a staff of regrowth for harvesting as well as a glowing mushroom and underground jungle farm for the heart plants in hardmode.

In addition fishing is huge. Biome fishing is important. With a central pool in a cleared out underground area place a big block on one side of corrupt/crimson, and on the other hallowed. Want prismite? fish from the one side. Ebonkoi? from the other. Make a little cabin with a trapdoor so you dont get bothered by nasties. (feel free to cheat slightly and get the corrupt block your world doesnt have so you can get all the fish. You can place the corrupt and crimson block on the same side)

Gear: no matter your play preference all of your accessories will have warding. You will always have the worm scarf equipped. Not negotiable.

Late normal mode can be tough with wall. Some weapons that make it a lot easier are hellwing bow (wooden arrows pierce hellfire ones explode) or a bee's knees with a hive pack can work. (I used hellwing myself) If you go magic piercing weapons would be best. My buddy used the space gun but a book of skulls might work too. (the guy who was with us as melee used some dropped knives? I forget, he didn't stick around long )

Be prepared once hardmode drops. The corrupted and crimson biomes spread fast and its gonna take some time before you have the juice to take on the bosses. We managed to get a rapetrain with holy arrows which made destroyer a joke. Twins and prime were still a bit tough but a golden shower helps quite a bit even if you arent a caster. The debuff is great. Edit: i think I mentioned it earlier in the thread but you can farm corrupt and hallowed mimics by making keys out of souls and putting them in empty chests.

Plan ahead. Use teleporters when you get em. Have a well constructed base and I recommend a scram tunnel for when things get bad. We had a bad goblin invasion once where we were caught in a death loop and needed a scram tunnel to go back and get our gear and slowly whittle it away. (midcore problems) Use traps, they help.

Ah, just that I never used the heart lamp/campfire stuff in previous patches, or the timed heart statue gigs. Never really felt the bosses were that insane where I would need them, and most of the time I never used the food buff. Expert is a huge departure for me on that aspect, as now I pop consumables constantly and try to keep the food buff up permanently as much as possible, and I've got campfires in each area where I fought bosses (not the eye though, I just had meteor gear/gun and didn't bother buffing at 160hp. He's just not that difficult) with heart lamps used for killing the wall.

yeah, was going to ask about the banners. I stopped to play PoE. but, had been collecting banners, and putting then ones I had at the base of my arena I was building. Any useful/needed for bosses, or are they all only the standard npcs, so don't help?

There are no banners for bosses, but having banners for the biome the arena is in can be lifesaving. In the jungle arena having skeleton archer, turtle and hornet banners helps immensely. (if underground. Surface you'll want the derp one) Nothin like having plantera low and getting slapped by a turtle for half your life. Anywhere you set up for anything throw down banners. I find the most use for banners around the base and general arena for eclipse mobs, those hurt and can overwhelm.

In your fishing area you can drop banners and summon something. Your summon can wreck while you fish, then you periodically go collect loot. Decent moneymaker and a good way to get a nymph.

If anyone else is having the old world import problems (e.g your worlds are pre-1.2.4), this fix worked for me without resorting to cracked 1.2.4 downloads: 1.3 - missing worlds

Having the Fire Bat/Lava Slime/Demon/Imp banners while working/clearing for your hellbridge helps quite a bit as well, because they basically come nonstop (and demons come in groups of 2-3 at times, filling the screen with scythes) And completely useless anywhere else as they only spawn in hell hah.

Reading all of your posts intimidates me. I've dug down about 1000m and have some sweet lead gear. Feeling like maybe playing alone is boring. Or I'm missing something.

Keep in mind that almost everyone here has played the game to the end like 2-3 times already, you can blow through the normal mode very fast at that point.

Honestly? Learn the basics, then switch immediately to expert mode. The game is just way too easy otherwise. It's much more interesting and you have to really think about what you want to do and prepare, especially with the bosses.

As a first time player who started solo on expert mode, I would recommend playing on a normal world then go back and beat the stuff on an expert world when you're already geared. Some of the expert stuff can be an ass beating even with the gear you're supposed to have at that point, especially when you have 0 clue what you're doing.

found progress solo on expert to be super slow. over a week to get full plat armor. still didnt do eye or anything, as was having such a hard time finding platinum. And that was KNOWING what I was doing. a new player definitely should not play expert. Makes the early game way too slow.

Yea I've played a bunch of times but this was the first time my brother played, we started on expert and it's just way too slow. Ended up with 2 worlds and hopping back and forth between the two. We just got into hardmode now which is SUPER brutal on expert. Almost pointlessly so. But seems like mats have a greater drop rate there so we will get back on expert asap anyway once we have some basic shit.

Hah, a new player trying expert is hilarious. It's ball crushingly difficult for people who understand the game. With that said, there is almost no challenge to the normal mode bosses on expert once you have hardmode gear. There is a big leap in both damage and defensive abilities when you start getting the better gear (like 20 defense difference) which turns stuff that takes 1/4th your bar into attacks that might do 10 damage. For example, I mainline a corruption world, so I made a random expert crimson world so I could kill the brain for the trophy/item. In Titanium armor and using the WoF 3shot gun, I simply just stood under him and shot (no arena/campfires/whatever) and just followed his motions with my mouse cursor and blasted away. I might have taken 100 points of total damage, but I didn't use any consumables or even healing potions. The challenge would be doing that in pre-WoF gear and weapons. And given the spit mechanic from the worm boss, I would have 100% chosen the crimson model over corrupted any day of the week.

I haven't killed any hardmode bosses, but I'm maxed out on pre-chloro armor and weapons (I had 4 chances to get the pirate cutlass, because I literally had 4 invasions queued one after the other from world timers, not the trigger consumable) and using the same clockwork rifle from WoF I was able to kill a couple of light mimics using the key to get a daedelus bow. Now I just need to stop being lazy and kill destroyer/twins/skeletron prime.

I will definitely say, however, that any corrupted/crimson desert biome that you are trying to mine through/near/around, is going to be a bitch and a half to deal with. I did zero "containment" steps in normal mode, so I had to kind of jog around and try to create gaps between biomes I wanted to save and what not. The djinns that spawn and have fire that moves through walls to blow up on you spawn constantly on expert, and having 2-4 of them filling the screen with exploding fire at a time is a pretty normal deal. That right there is absolutely ridiculous.

Edit: As expected, Daedelus bow wrecks the Destroyer hardcore. I need to make some unicorn farming areas (basically just long stretches of hallow) so I can make more Holy arrows, as I used 200 on the destroyer unbuffed to kill him. Took a bit of normal arrow spam through some wooden walkways, though. Also, if you get a goblin invasion in hardmode and manage to get the Shadowflame knives off the Goblin Summoner monster, you trivialize the shit out of everything that isn't a boss monster in hard mode. It has acceptable KB and autofire with a ranged projectile getting melee bonus damage, so you wear the best AC set of armor and get full bonus with a ranged weapon, and it can happen pretty early on in Hard Mode. Consumes nothing, making it the default "just keep it equipped" weapon unless you need specific weapons for a fight. So much for farming up a Dao of Pow~

I've been playing solo to catch up (wasn't ready for Expert mode yet) and have managed to go all the way up to S.D.M.G build and a Nebula armor + Nebula Arcanum build. The ranged build wrecks shit with cholorphyte bullets but farming them sucks ass. I can live almost forever with Nebula Arcanum with a modicum of dodging skills. Haven't tried any melee builds seriously and fishing dailies piss me off (hate artificial cock blocks to accessories).

Jumped back on the server again only to find it wrecked to shit. WTF?

POE was giving me massive latency issues last night. so jumped back into this.

Tried Eye. And I was GREATLY overprepared. haha. I don't know, I guess I just assumed random stuff was so much stronger, I needed to be fully decked out in top progression. for pre-eye, that being platinum or gold. So I had that. And I also did fishing, potions, etc. so had the 10% damage, ironskin, 10% DR, speed, thorns, etc, etc.. Did the campfires, sunflowers, etc.
I had like 28 base armor. 380 life.
Weapons, again.. I had jester arrows, and plat bow. grenades. And snowballgun. ended up using just the snowballgun.

Ended up using the snowball gun, and he never got me below 350 hp.. after the first kill, got the dryad, and had her "close" to the arena. at which point I farmed him a bit, and didn't even bother running. just stood there and tanked him, in her aura. And again, never more then 70hp lost. never used a healing potion.

Beat Moon Lord on expert without dropping down to Normal at any point on a fresh character, and stayed ranged the whole time. Rough is a good way to describe it, and the Solar Pillar stuff is retardo mode. Died more there than anywhere else in the game combined. The fact you almost need to have every accessory with Armored/Warding on it until you access the next tier of content at each stage is kind of a downer, and a huge money sink. Even in Beetle Armor (second best defensively) you take an assload of damage from silly shit. And since all your mods are aimed at defensive stuff, as well as mobs increased defense/hp, you end up spending a lot of time on mobs until you outgear them by a significant amount.

Some of the expert rewards are cool... but in context, you need to get certain ones or you are just boning yourself completely. You get an extra slot after WoF, sure, but since you have to keep the Worm Scarf on or everything will two shot you... sort of ends up being a wash.
