    Weather

I didn't see this thread come over yet (if I'm wrong pls feel free to delete/merge).

I feel like...did anyone ever seen mean girls? The scene where the Gretchen Wieners gets told by Rachel McAdams to 'stop trying to make fetch happen'?

Thats what I feel like with the weather channel and the naming system right now.

That being said, at least Euclid has brought us some snow.

We got snow here in Dallas, but seeing as it was over 50 degrees that morning it didn't get the pavement and ground cold enough for any serious issues. Snow still on lawns, streets completely clear. And by this I mean Dallas definition of "snow accumulation" which usually means 1-2". It essentially meant that driving to the family xmas was a cold wet slog, and driving home was cold and wet with snow/sleet.

Not yet but that's what is being called for later this evening. With the way the weather has progressed today it wouldn't surprise me.

Still hasn't snowed in the southwest burbs of Chicago... although that might be changing as we speak.

Coldest early part of the winter with the most snow that I can recall in Edmonton. That said, human memory is a tricky thing, so it's probably nothing record setting. But it's certainly worse than the norm for the past 5-10 years.

I haven't had to bust out a snow shovel in almost 2 years now in Kansas City. Longest stretch of my 35 year life without a snow that was more than an inch or two. I almost bought a snowblower 2 Winters ago, because it and the one before it were SO bad. Glad I didn't.

Went from 65 to 32 here today, with 2.5 inches of rain yesterday. I liked the old winters when it got cold and stayed cold until Spring.

There's this stupid shitty cold front which has been in California for what feels like a week (although it appears it's only been like 4 or 5 days). I'm glad that fucker is on it's way to the rest of the country and it can get warm here again.

Yeah WTF is this shit? SF is never really affected by these kinds of things much, but it's still been dipping into the 40s the past week. Awful.

Been below freezing for 3-4 days straight here. Went to school today and the ground around sprinklers/hydrants was just frozen chunks of ice.

Been above freezing here for 24 hours and supposed to be for another couple days. It's not overly unusual, but it's pretty unseasonable. Kinda want it to drop well back below freezing because the roads are a fucking mess, going through a gallon of wiper fluid a day.

Looks like an ice storm headed this way. Give me two feet of snow over that shit. Still a ton of damaged trees here from Sandy.

You guys need to get your shit together, hire some people from the gulf coast if nobody up there can figure out how to trim trees.

The trees that came down on houses, trees, roads etc have long been cleared away. You could not get a tree trimming company here that wasn't in emergency only mode for nearly 2 months. The stuff you can't easily see IE, weakened branches still high up in trees that posed no immediate danger are still up there. Not to mention i live in a heavily wooded area. Also how often does the gulf coast get significant snow and ice after a major storm like that.

Its been in the mid 80s in orlando for about two weeks now. While i too would trade in snow/ice for this in a heartbeat if that was my choice, it still fucking sucks. Way too hot here for far too long this winter. All i want is my normal 60s-70s winters, is that too much to ask.

Global warming is turning the volume of extreme weather up, Spinal-Tap-style, to 11. The temperature forecast for next Monday by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology is so unprecedented - over 52C - that it has had to add a new colour to the top of its scale, a suitably incandescent purple.

Most of our units of measurement do suck, but I do like the Fahrenheit system. Zero feels too warm to be worthy of the zero value. Fahrenheit zero is legit cold.

80% more precise, only because of the degree spacing, but it's antiquated as attested by water freezing at the arbitrary number of 32 instead of a sensible 0.

And what does Obama have to do with any of this? Or Canadians? Celcius is a European convention.

Nah. It's a "pretty much everyone but the USA" convention, unless you're talking about ovens for some reason. I've yet to figure out why my oven, sold in Canada, isn't in Celsius... annoying.

Yup. Also qualifies if it sublimates.

Heh, for cooking, mechanical/heating stuff, and hot tubs I go by F. For weather I go by C. Us Canadians are all goofy that way. Ask a typical Canadian how tall they are or how much they weigh, and at least out West, 95% will answer in feet, inches and pounds.

Yeah, I answer in ft/in/lb as well. My wife's from Belgium, and she gives me a dirty look every single time I don't use metric. It's worth it every time.

Yeah the -40 or so is a real treat today. They've already closed all the local schools for tomorrow because it's going to be just as cold.

Glad I work from home on weeks like this.

Have you been to Chicago in the winter? It's not garbage at all. Just like heat and humidity. 80 degrees (F) can feel extremely unpleasant with high humidity.

Plus, I spent 2 years living in -40 BEFORE windchill. Ya'll pussies.

Yeah, using windchill as a modifier to temperature is ridiculous. Just tell me what the temperature is and what the wind speed is. a windchilld -35C and a -35C with no wind are entirely different things with extremely different ways of mitigating. Shit even when you start to move around 0C you have considerations involving whether or not your windshield wiper fluid will stream liquid ice onto your windshield or will actually help you.

Those are the same people who back up traffic on perfectly normal days because they slow down to 35mph every time the beltway has a slight turn.

We- meaning the USA- should be on metric, -there are only 3 countries in the world i believe NOT on the Metric System- USA, Burma and Liberia (atleast according to wikipedia)

we cannot blame Obama for this...we have to blame, Reagan because he defunded the 1975 metric conversion act in 1981 or 1982 in a cost cutting move.

congress has passed a new conversion act for federal work projects,

bitch to convert at times if we get a job abutting a new highway layout. since i am so used to engineering convention for feet/tenths/hundredths
and the occasional rod & link measurements we get doing research for jobs. metric is just another "ok fire up the conversion program" aspect of the job.

weather wise...damn cold outside atm. was 3F when i took my son to his bus [email protected]:40 and was 5F @9am..

This is the thing I hate most about winter. Not the cold, not the having to get up earlier and defrost the car, not the huge heating bills. But idiots driving at stupid mph when the roads clearly aren't icy. I hate people.

QFT. Up around Bethesda on the beltway is maddening for this reason.

I didnt see any accidents yesterday on the way in but there were two types of drivers: (1) People who decided to do no higher than 20mph pissing everyone off; (2) people who decided to drive extra retarded because OMG OMG OMG I HAZ 4 WHEEL DRIVE.

I'm teleworking today I think. Snow is supposed to start at noon and I'm not trying to deal with that shit. Governments on unscheduled whatever the fuck so husbands also going to telework.

I have to admit, the one redeeming part of this soul-sucking government proposal development business is that teleworking is extremely common. As soon as I see a single snowflake fall this afternoon I'm going to work from home. Fuck driving home in rush hour with the plebs.

yeah the day they can roll out classified networks to my house is the day I am never seen again at work. Teleworking would be very dangerous for me.

You know those people who freak out over 2 inches of snow? Imagine their surprise when we're now getting 5 centimeters. FIVE WHOLE CENTIMETERS! Start getting into 30+ range and they'll think the Day After Tomorrow is happening.

That will also spawn a series of "How many feet is 30 centimeters?" responses, at which point we will set facepalming to maximum.

The whole world was supposed to go metric. This included the USA. USA manufaturers complained that switching would cost them money. They lobbied congress and USA dropped out of the international agreement. So blame the cheapskate US manufacturing sector.

And yet every time I buy anything nowadays, whether it be American made or not, I gotta bust out the fucking 10mm wrench to put it together, while my 1/2 inch wrench rusts away in the toolbox.

Huge snow storm may be happening Friday for Northeast. That, or not much at all. Yea, it's not much to go on, but it's pretty much all that the meteorologists will call for now.

So based on the weather models the tri-state area could get 2-30 inches of snow. I'm ready for 30 bring it on.

8-12 Inches of snow expected in this party of Jersey. Use to be time when Jimmie russlin didn't kick in till a foot plus. It's Armageddon here at the stores again, for a storm that will be over in like 6 hours.

Most stations I'm looking at say ~11inches for me over the night. Psh, yeah right, I'm guessing we get maybe 3 or 4, just enough for people to drive 30 under the speed limit even though all the main roads are coated with a layer of fucking salt.

if the wind is strong enough & enough snow falls that is driftable. my driveway by my garage will be BARE GROUND...for about 10 feet. then there will be a Wall of snow depending on the amount of snow we get, the drift could be 5-6' high, or higher.

blizzard of 78 the snow drift in my back yard(parents house not where i live now) was over 8' in height- they got pictures of the shed all you can see is the top foot of the roof peak

There was a half inch of ice on my entire car this morning. My entire apartment parking lot was out scraping the shit off their windows and everyone was driving with minimal visibility. Looks like this weekend will be pretty light overall for MI though.

I'll post some pictures when there is snow accumulation worth posting. It's still pansy snowfall at the moment, but my workplace let everyone out early so I can't complain ;P

Also, Mass is banning all cars from the roads after 4pm, with some exceptions (media, healthcare, utility, emergency, etc).

I know here during winter storms anyway, if they declare a state of emergency, technically only emergency vehicles are allowed on the roads. Most do stay off, and ones that don't, nothing ever happens.

In Ohio you can get a ticket for driving during emergency road conditions unless you are police/fire/emt/other safety related jobs. I think it's about 200 bucks. I've been pulled over once, but was let go when I showed my I.D. badge. It's actually not that bad driving in unplowed snow with snow tires and awd, better than when it's icy/semi-plowed slush imo. Usually my bigger concern is when the roads are unplowed and with blowing snow you can't actually see where the road is.

Even in Chicago the only road they ever close is Lake Shore Drive and that's only because 300 people got stranded on it a couple years ago during our huge snow storm
