Every four years I realize how little I care about the Euro when compared to the World Cup. I am not too sure why... it's probably a question of diversity in play styles and the opportunity to see players we are not used to see with the asian, african and american teams.

    Predictions:

    Germany to win
Spain losing finalists (although another world cup 2014 performance would be awesome)
Belgium gets knocked out in the semis

England if they played as well as when Rooney was injured will maybe get to the semis of even the final in expense of Spain. If they revert back to the game plan against Portugal where in order to cram Rooney into the squad, they played Alli on the left side of midfield, Kane and Vardy as wingers and Rooney through the middle: Group stage exit with no wins. Hodgson so retarded.

That goal by Payet might be one of the most skillful shots from that distance Ive ever seen. goalkeeper absolutely ZERO chance to save that ball.

A wonderstrike if there ever was one.

yeah, the only legit goal in that game was blind luck, and if he scores a second goal like that, I'll streak.

Not sure who I am even cheering for at this tournament. I'm going for Iceland! I hope they do well.

Great games so far, but some of the goalkeeping from free kicks have been pretty bad.

He's a really bad loser, which only makes the result more amusing.

The Real Madrid star also refused to shake the hands of the Iceland players after the group match in Saint-Etienne. "I thought they'd won the Euros the way they celebrated at the end," he said.

"It was unbelievable. We tried hard to win the game and Iceland didn't try anything. This, in my opinion, shows a small mentality and they are not going to do anything in the competition."

Ronaldo did come off as a cry baby, but a sore loser? I dont know why the media is pushing that angle, Portugal didnt fucking lose lol.

His comments do actually have some merit in a sense, as Iceland had all of 2 chances the entire match, whilst piling behind the ball on the other end. It doesnt make for good football, but they got a result and being such a small nation and this being their debut, the celebration was probably forgivable.

I wish the french team would consider scoring before the 90th minute this euro.

So far I really liked Croatia (went to see them play as the parc des princes is 5 minutes walk from my home) and germany.

Portugal draw against Iceland is really like losing. Fuck, Iceland is not even the size of a medium town and they qualified for the euro and are still in the race. Ronaldo really looked like a dick.

Yep. When a Portugal vs Iceland match ends in a draw, Iceland won a point and Portugal lost two points.

The match commentator said that 10% of the Iceland population was inside the stadium supporting the team.

10% (~33.000) of the population have travelled to France. I don't think they were all present at the stadium, since it can only hold ~41.000 people.

Strange competition for the time being... I am not sure if it's because only 8 of the 24 teams are eliminated in group phase, but not many matches have been entertaining and even less teams have been impressive. I liked what I saw of Croatia, but mostly because of Modric who got injured in the second match...

As far as I am concerned, all jerseys should be like that. That way, you can't be stopped when someone pulls your jersey and it's difficult to not call a penalty when the defender has a third of the attacker's jersey in his fist!

It's the 5th/6th referee that is supposed to look at the keeper and with goal line technology it's the only thing he has to do during a penalty kick... maybe the guy called for the very very generous penalty in the first place and felt guilty? Or maybe these guys are just being paid to do nothing...

Yeah....and then the rest of the game happened.

I agree his free kicks have been off lately though. But pretty transcendent performance from Ronaldo today.

Our defense was so shitty, it was painful to watch. Ronaldo could do whatever he wanted. Oh well.

There seem to have been a lot of late goals in this tournament. There's a couple of decent looking matches in the next round, Croatia v Portugal on Saturday and Italy v Spain on Monday.

I drew Iceland in the office sweepstakes. I'm happier now than I was at the time

also 4 croatian players ran into the box before the penalty, and not a single spanish player. It doesn't get any more obvious.

    Portugal might just be due.

That team hasnt won fuck all in their entire history basically, with Benfica (and Porto, they did win the Champions League in 2004) being that country's only source of pride when it comes to silverware. But that was in the days of fucking Eusebio in the 60's when they won back to back Champions League (or European Cup at that time) I believe. The national team has ALWAYS disappointed. I still remember watching in 2004 when a young Ronaldo cried on the pitch after somehow losing to fucking Greece in the final ON THEIR HOME SOIL. Truly one of the biggest football upsets in history.

I also remember Portugal beating England in 2006 to reach the semi final in the World Cup at Germany, a sensational game they won on penalties. But then they lost to bitch ass Thierry Henry and his flopping antics to lose 1-0 by virtue of a PK. That was the closest they have ever got in both tournaments. So maybe Ronaldo can drag this team to glory, as knockout rounds is where he thrives, and his confidence should be at an all time high given his Champions League triumph. That backheel goal was fucking sublime and if he can get a couple more goals over the next game or 2 they can end up playing in a semi final or perhaps even a final.

I'd be quite odd for portugal to win, indeed. They are only team that qualified without a single win. The odds of Portugal beating Croatia seem low, Croatia team is fairly strong this time around.

I agree but Ricardo Queresma has been a revelation for this Portugal team. I remember when he was a 22 year old kid (played for Porto I think, still does?) and Scolari and that other idiot coach they had at the last World Cup didnt put him in the side. He has finally been given his opportunity after maturing as a player and teammate and has made good on it.

He is very dangerous on the ball, particularly his service into the box. If he gets out wide in the opponents half he is pretty much a threat every single time down. If Ronaldo can continue to ease into form they should be able to score enough goals to be a tough side to beat. I mean cmon, they should have beaten Austria, Ronaldo missed PK isnt a regular "thing" the guy sealed the Champions League with a PK as cool as they come. He has flubbed a few from the spot over his career, but he finds the back of the net more times than not. Iceland equalized off a sublime outside the box strike against a Portuguese keeper who has been absolutely dreadful this tournament. (although 2 goals from Hungary were deflections) As easy as they didnt win a match, they could have easily won all 3 and thats not a ridiculous argument.

All that matters is they advance and they advance because the best player in the world showed the fuck up when his side was on the precipice. I mean fuck, he scored his first goal to break the ice with a disgusting back heel flick that was a 1 in a thousand type goal. The header to secure the result and his brace was pretty much a video game type goal where he raised up above everyone else and finished with such brutal efficiency. The Hungarian defenders were literally bystanders as the ball from Queresma came in; Christiano timed it perfectly and headed home leaving the keeper with zero chance.

Croatia is very good and could easily beat Portugal as a lot of their players are old and I dont trust their coach, but if Ronaldo plays like he did against Hungary and there aren't 2 deflected goals or Pepe going all Pepe and getting sent off, they win this game.

Portugal can definitely win, the trouble being that if Ronaldo is not at 100% in a single match then the tournament is over. And even if he's 100% it's not going to be enough against some team, so with a little luck, not impossible, but portugal will need more luck than some other team that are not dependant on a single player.

Consolation prize for Switzerland: Shaqiri scored the best goal of the Euro so far and it will be tough to top. Losing a penalty shoot-out 4-5 is a bit lame, but the lamest thing really is to not have won before it came down to the penalty lottery. They pay an expensive price for a poor first half and sterile domination through the extra time.

I am not sure really. Actual extreme right wing parties are close to non existant in Switzerland, mostly because there is a big populist right wing party that got the nationalists/xenophobes covered and since they are terrible but also not total idiots, they know better than to badmouth the national team!

I'll assume they don't care when the team wins and blame the albanians when it loses! Note that all the players are either born in Switzerland or immigrated when 5 or under (with the possible exception of Embolo, but he played for the youth national teams growing up).

From a sport standpoint, they are all players who learned to play in Switzerland, which should be the criteria for selection really, more than the passport.

tbh Ronaldo played a completely different game than against Hungary. So your prediction was way off =P

That game felt like passing a kidney stone... damn. 115 minutes without a single shot on target must be some kind of (sad) record too.

Germany seems one tier above the rest in this competition.

I guess it's official, Belgium now has a golden generation. I won't be surprised if they end up winning something in the next 6-8 years.

I thought he was robbed of his chance to open his account in the 1st half when he played a nice ball just over midfield and made an absolutely fantastic run, only to be caught offsides when the return through ball came so obviously late. Little did I know he'd craft that masterpiece late. He was dominant, and for a team like Belgium, I think romping towards the end to push it to 4-0 is big for their confidence going forward considering how many chances they left wanting to extend the lead from 1-0 earlier in the game.

If they use this result and their favorable bracket to their advantage...it could be this month. I could see Poland/Portugal winner potentially giving them an issue if Ronaldo/Lewandowski take over the game...but realistically Belgium's path to the final is pretty forgiving compared to the other half of the bracket.

Lukaku gave that pass too late. Romelu is weak in the combination, that was obvious again this game.

Lukaku is only really effective when everything revolves around him, if not he gets lured into solo dribbles against multiple defenders and loses possession or is pressured into a bad spot. When he is running off the ball and the midfield/forward players are creating space with passing THATS when he can latch onto something if he can get into or near the area. Everton fans were weary of him for a reason, like you said he isnt fluid in the build up and really is just a poacher basically.

He does do well for Belgium but he is too inconsistent IMO to be a true star.

Italy is playing very very well. Spain is lucky De Gea made a couple great saves (maybe unlucky he did one not so great, but where were the defenders to help him?).

It felt like the italians would run out of gas before the end and regret being only one goal ahead, but nope. A couple good saves by Buffon, a brilliant counter-attack in stoppage time and voilą. They will be tough to beat.

I wonder if Hodgson will even bother explaining why he kept that shit Rooney on the pitch for so long or just step down and end the Press conference.

You lost to a country with a population of 330k. That's, what? Less than 1% of your population?

Haven't watched any of the England games. GOT finale finished in time for the 2nd half, I chose reading the GOT thread over watching it.

    So you're saying there's a chance?

Here's the stat of the century re: Iceland - if you're a male between the ages of 20-40, you had a 1/2000 chance of being on that team. Hopefully the tournament livens up now, it's been utterly terrible so far mostly

This game was as english as it can be. Now the young generation is mentally fucked up already aswell.

Kane and Alli were abject all tournament. Even as a Spurs supporter, I will criticise if they deserve it. They did not play well at all. Rooney was shoehorned into the team after injury to break up a winning team and upset the balance. Joe Hart was fucking atrocious. Sterling was woefully out of form yet still started 3 games out of 4. Rashford should have played more minutes. Alli playing in midfield did not suit him at all, he plays as a number 10 for Spurs but was never played there in the tournament.

    So. Fucking. Bad.

It's the ultimate team sport and Neki nailed exactly why they lost.

Waited too long for Rashford and carry should've played for Kane n
